The previous Alpha 1 was a series of weekend or single day tests in the lead up to the actual main Alpha 1 testing. The main Alpha 1 testing was largely continuous for the entire month, with occasional downtime for updates or fixes.
I would personally expect Alpha 2, and the betas, to be similar in structure. The main difference would be less wipes.
I don't believe it is fully decided exactly how long each of those upcoming Alpha/Beta periods will be, or exactly how close to release.
