I might be wrong in this assumption, but I think it'll be harder to find the best and most optimal party+gear set composition than class+gear combo setup. And I can't even make a fact-based assumption on which side Ashes is leaning on, because we have 0 info about classes or gear or augments or anything else really.

Metas form when there's a ton of positive variety to choose from. And with gear being easily changeable, the meta will definitely set in sooner or later. But considering how long it takes to lvl classes, if you have sets with pros and cons, across the whole tier spectrum, the meta would be way harder to properly figure out. Or at least that's how it seems to me. If Intrepid decides to go for +- singular gear pieces and let us completely mismatch everything and all - I'll live with it.

I guess it does? That is if you don't just boost your gear w/o any drawbacks. And I hope that there's full sets across all tiers of gear just so I can continue with my transmog hate

This sounds a bit like my idea for enchantment, with slots in a gear piece getting their own effects/stats. Though I still would prefer some risks for those rewards. And you said "you don't need" when talking about def slots on a high def gear piece. Do you mean just freedom of choice or is the "tradeoff" the fact that you have a limited amount of usable slots (less than the available ones)? Cause I feel like I'd still slot the def boosts even if I already have a high def gear piece, cause why da hell would I ...

Just as a curiosity, did they always just OE w/o backups or did they always have them, or somewhere in-between?

Pfft, nothing's an overkill. If I can do it - I will. And I know quite a few people who have the same mindset, which is why I try to account for that thinking when I suggest drawbacks to mechanics. And the bigger the power boost - the bigger the drawback. Well that's just logical. Leather shouldn't give you too much def, if any really. Well either way, my main point in this particular discussion is - have drawbacks to gear bonuses. Imo it adds some flavor and decision-making to the process of picking out gear and it's a ...

Which is why I suggested pre-designed sets that make the entire party build around their encounters, cause I still feel that singular gear pieces with either their own stats or even manually allocated enhancement slots will just lead to peak optimization asap. Though I haven't played a game where both systems were present, to compare which one falls prey to meta builds faster.

It is a pyramid, but for top lvl gear instead of being insanely high OE lvls, it'd be smth like +5 or +6, where +3 is the safe enchant, so your pyramid is really low. And usually people with those weapons would either go for a scroll that just resets the enchant lvls instead of destroying the weapon, but those are very rare so it's not like every other OE happens through their use. Or as hapy said, you have a "raw" version of your weapon/gear (no horizontal enchantments no nothing, which makes it quite a bit cheaper) and ...

L2's pve didn't require you to OE, so usually only the ones who wanted to do it went for it. And they go through a ton of gear/mat sinks to go up even a few steps. And while they were sinking a ton of resources at their top lvl of progress, everyone else was just catching up to their base lvl, so, in the long run, OE equalized power lvl on the server (which is one of the features I listed a few pages back).
Post by Ludullu on 2022-06-07 18:57:58
Noaani wants EVERQUEST! But outside of that L2 really didn't have much of PvE. You just stood in one place and unloaded onto the boss/mob. There weren't any complex mechanics or intricate combat designs for mobs. Pretty much all bosses were just thiccque dmg piñatas.
Post by Ludullu on 2022-06-07 19:17:53
Is top lvl content in BDO in any way party-related? Or is it still solo farming spots? Cause I feel like reliance on the trinity+buffers of L2 allowed OEing to not influence ease of pve too much. Yes, you'd kill mobs maybe 1-3 secs faster, but you could only do that because you had your full buffs, a tank/bard kiting them around and a healer behind you if you needed it. You super cool OE gear didn't contribute all that much. So I think Intrepid just needs to properly design mobs around classes and their potential combinations (which is ...

Wanna know the funniest thing ever? There's like 5-6 versions of Lineage(s) that all have full auto-battle and auto-pvp and auto-questing. And that shit is making NCsoft literal billions. Fucking Koreans and Chinese players dumping all their money into this shit and then we have 0 good non-p2w games coming from the east. smh my god damn head.

No argument here pretty sure Nish is joking too. Or at least I hope he is, cause L2's pve was definitely super easy, when it comes to mechanics and features. Yes, you needed a party to farm it properly, but that's only because mobs are thiccque as hell and hit like trucks.
Post by Ludullu on 2022-06-07 19:44:39
But you do get pvp benefits from having OE gear. Yes, they're small, but as I said, when you're at the top, each % matters. If it's a 1v1 same class matchup in arena, you might have a crit just bigger enough than your opponent to kill him before he kills you. And if it's a party v party, your few % of power can be amplified by buffers and you now might get crits that can kill an enemy in 30 secs instead of 40 secs (and that's huuuge in pvp). And if it's a huge pvp in ...

Iirc I haven't seen a single location in L2 that didn't have bots. Ok, maybe one location, but even then it would highly depend on how optimal of a farm we're talking about. Cause the most optimal is to gather a shitton of mobs and correctly deal with them through particular skills, while constantly being on the verge of death (and sometimes even dying). And you grind that one spot until you go up several tiers of gear (mainly from those mobs) and can move onto instance boss farming for top lvl gear. So in other words - L2 ...

I mean, even w/o luck, you'd still need a ton of time to just get to that top gear. So that already removes 90++% of the playerbase. And then you're just playing a 4x strategy, where you gotta control resources flows, money expenditures, people resources and farm locations control. If you manage to achieve most/all of those - you won't even need luck. But at that point you're also dominating most of the server so you might not even need the OE (unless you're the person who likes it). And like I've said before, I've seen people overcoming RPS ...

Those are some sacrilegious words in the potential presence of Dygz I'd say L2 was definite an RP game by that definition. I've had a ton of evenings/days/weeks where I'd discuss my party's actions during encounters (both past and future). We'd discuss better movements and skill usages in-between train pulls and we'd talk about proper pvp engagement in-between each fight. And everyone would have to play their classes' role perfectly to achieve victory. Imo that's as RP as it gets.

Which is why I said that sets should have drawbacks so that there isn't one single "best one". Or at least it's not best in all situations, so your party has to support you when you set doesn't match up with the encounter. And I've played L2 with multiple different gear pieces meant for different matchups. I had around 10 different pieces that I used for different enemies on the arena. And I personally disliked that I had to do that. And the pieces were even from the same set, just with different horizontal enchantments, so it's not like ...

I mentioned it in one of the previous posts. To me, it seems easier to balance around predesigned sets that have a variety of pros+cons combos rather than having each and every gear piece have it's own combo that could then be combined with 7 more gear piece combos and you might get some imbalanced boost to whatever stat. And it also either requires devs to randomize those potential combos or design unique ones for each piece of gear. And then on top of that, you have the crafting dials that could boost said combos even higher. Though again, ...

From the pov of L2 vet it looks like this: if I see a dude that's 2 tiers in gear lower than me, but I know that the game's gear scaling is very tight - I'll probably go and fight that dude, because I'd be fighting against his skill rather than just his gear. If we have the same in Ashes, all the casual players, who don't have the skill for the pvp or don't want to be bothered with pvp most of the time, will complain a lot about being attacked by stronger dudes. Yes, you'll allow a ...

All hyped games live on unrealistic expectations. I'm definitely very excited for Ashes, mainly because it has all the features I love in mmos, but it will never live up to the, already huge, expectations people have attributed to it. And the closer we get to the release, the bigger those expectations will become. It's only downhill from here imo (and by "here" I really mean 2020's Peon video ).
Post by Ludullu on 2022-06-08 16:13:40
I think Josh Strife Haeys' video explained it well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGCFxHUsSGU It's more about the time you put into the knowledge of the game and application of it. A casual player won't know the precise details of class interactions, so of course they won't be as good in pvp as a dude who knows that stuff. And on top of that, the knowledge dude has spent more time honing his skills in the game while casual player most likely didn't. And all of that is on top of time invested into gear. So imo yes, casuals will lose in most ...

And I'm sure that in all those other games where they were hardcore, they'd have way more skills than casuals in that game. But if you come into this game w/o a ton of research on it and then not spend a ton of time learning about it or just playing it, the chances are - you'll lose in pvp against a person who did all of that.
Post by Ludullu on 2022-06-08 16:48:31
Thath me! And I personally took the losses as the sacrifice required for the potential beauty. Yes, losing felt bad, but L2 also had 60% chance crafting recipes so by the time you came to OEing your gear - you were more than used to losing mats.

But in the case of a completely safe upgrade, what would be the "respectful" length of time required for said upgrade? Would it be 1h or 20? Cause I feel like it's usually 20, or every achievement is instead super easy and fast which is its own problem. And if it's closer to 20 for everyone, then you're fucking over all the people who can't spend that time for an upgrade (especially if it's extra content and not a necessary one). So imo having a range for those things is fairer. Now you could say that the game could ...

Post by Ludullu on 2022-06-08 17:44:11
If gear is scaled in a way that each tier is quite more powerful than the previous one, then player power will be determined by gear tier (excluding the skill, because that takes time on its own). Higher tiers will be locked not only by harder pve, but also pvp. Both of those things take time and skill (which takes time). Any higher tiered gear will be more expensive and will be rarer than the previous tier. So it won't be as easy as "just buy higher tier lol". Because acquiring big amounts of money will either require time ...

Everything else is skill (both mechanical and build-related), and those things require time or being hardcore about game knowledge (which kinda takes time too).
