I don't like action combat, and it could very potentially stop me from playing

Yeah, I expect Intrepid to either go back on that design decision or to go with smth like you described. They've said that instanced bosses won't be repeatable and won't give you BiS stuff though, so I dunno tbh. There's a ton of question when it comes to their pve promises. And the "only a few % of people can clear it" is probably the most problematic one cause there's just too many implications that come with it, and none of them really work in the context of what's widely accepted as top lvl pve content in mmos.

Would such a huge stagger of gear work on the server scale though? Instanced content is not repeatable (at least rn) so you'd either have to give out waaaaay more gear per run than the raid required to clear the dungeon, or you'd make the dungeon easy enough for everyone to clear (which kinda defeats the point of instanced content being more complex). But even if you give a ton of gear per Odd dungeon, how much is truly "a ton"? Cause theoretically only some % of guilds would be able to beat said dungeon, while, again theoretically, you'd ...

Yeah, I came at it from the completely other side of "everything you need is available in the open world so instanced content is purely for the story's sake and not required at all if you don't care about the story". If that's what it means, then I'll be interested to see what they do, because the weird outcomes of 'yeah you need OW bosses to gear up Defense'... Well, let's just say that I know another game that tried that...[/quote] I mean, I played a game like that for 12 years Not every piece of gear came from ...

I'd think so. If the first raid has a sub-optimal setup and had the first hit, but then the second raid with an optimal setup comes up and starts hitting the boss too, the og raid would have to decide: do they flag up and try their luck in pvp/pk or do they think they have enough dps to do the 40% required for loot before the boss dies. I'd assume that with a tracker this wouldn't really be an issue because the og raid would've used said tracker to know what the best dps setup is and utilize ...

My assumption so far has been "just for story's sake". It's way easier to tell any kind of story and keep it engaging, if you can present that story in an undisturbed and clean way. Having some boss talk about lore at you while there's hundreds of people running around yelling shit in chat (or god forbid VC) would take you right out the immersion. Same would go for just having any kind of bosses related to the story. You'd have to either put the boss on a 1 min timer to let anyone clear the story when they ...

PvP with skins an advantage?

Post by Ludullu on 2022-07-22 11:31:34

But my whole point was that if I'm a ranger, I'd rather shoot someone in robe/light armor because there's a much higher chance that their def stat is lower than someone's who's wearing plate. And if a costume/cosmetic can cover up that gear type, I'd have a harder time picking out a high value target. But yes, it's mainly just a preference that stems from L2's gear system which I liked a lot, but I'll deal with it if Ashes ends up being very secretive about its gear presentation (clicking a dude in a huge crowd just to know ...

We'll have to see. I sure as hell hope they don't do that cause that kinda defeats the whole purpose of gear type separation.

PvP with skins an advantage?

Post by Ludullu on 2022-07-22 21:15:34

That'll come down to my knowledge of the current meta and potential class abilities. But unless the gear icon is always visible it'll be almost impossible to click through all high value targets to figure out who you should attack first. Skins/cosmetics remove sight-reading ability which, imo, is crucial for pvp. But we'll have to see how it works out in Ashes.

By this point in my reading this forum, this is a Dygz classic. He seems to take a lot of things in their most literal way and if someone's argument doesn't quite fit his own literal take on some part of the argument, then the whole argument is invalid. And that's on top of him pushing the line of "if I don't play this way then you must not play this way either". Like, yes, in theory you should be able to kill bosses w/o using META, but Intrepid literally wants pve competition (with boss loots being time-dependent), so ...

Hell, I've killed literal thousands in L2 w/o any reason at all. I was just running towards a farming spot, saw a flagged dude and killed him. That's it. 0 competition.

Post by Ludullu on 2022-07-22 22:18:35

Nope, it was literally just flagged people who were free targets for me to kill. Even if they fought back there was no competition because there was nothing to compete for. We just fought, someone died and the winner moved on with whatever they were doing. You're trying to live a black&white life in a grey world.

Post by Ludullu on 2022-07-22 22:41:19

Could be. I was just trying to give an example of pvp not being competitive (at least in the general definition of competition). Though I then went to reassure my knowledge of that definition and one sub-meaning couuuld maybe include "just killed a dude w/o a reason" under its umbrella, but at that point it'd be more of a philosophical and psychological issue rather than a semantic one. Mag just likes to argue between 2 extremes, disregarding the middle of the spectrum, which I find at least a bit silly

This is funny cause I wanted to bring up marathons to make my point Wanted to say that to most people marathons are just about completing the thing, while some people try going for best times and amongst themselves they are, in fact, competing. This was what I tried addressing with my "thousands of meaningless pvp" post. I wasn't claiming that I was at the top of the server or even anywhere near top %ile, but exactly because of that the pvp in the middle could quite often be meaningless because people just had fun killing each other simply ...

Please do expand on that context. I'll gladly admit that I don't always properly understand what others say cause english is my thirds language and no matter how much I try to perfect it, it's just not at a point where I'd want it to be. But I've reread the posts I linked and they still seem to align with my point.

So yeah, my mention of killing people on my way to farm applies to this. So even here it's a spectrum rather than just "competitive or not". Due to how L2's dungeons worked (same as Ashes) I was on my way to deeper mobs with better loot and would kill people on my way there if I saw flagged dudes. And their mobs would attack me so I'd kill those mobs too. I'd call that a pvx moment with non-competitive pvp.

Guess we've got different definitions for competition

I don't like action combat, and it could very potentially stop me from playing

Post by Ludullu on 2022-07-23 02:28:06

Imo "competition" means a common goal that people fight for. Me fighting/killing someone on my way to somewhere has nothing to do with my goal. I just see a character that I can just kill and I do it. Sometimes they kill me, so it's not like I just dominate everyone I see. But the main point, there was nothing we were competing for. But you think that just fighting for your life is "a competition". And that's where we disagree.

He's not in my way. He's just farming his room and happens to be flagged for whatever reason. I'm just passing by and decide to kill him because he's flagged. It's as easy as that. There's no deeper motivation and nothing we're competing for.

I don't like action combat, and it could very potentially stop me from playing

Post by Ludullu on 2022-07-23 03:07:45

To me "to win" is not a goal. The win is the result of competition. Competition can only take place when 2 different entities have the same goal (be it "kill a certain mob", "be the first to kill a boss", "be at the top of a leaderboard", "come somewhere first" etc). To me survival is not competitive. To you it isn't either btw, cause, if it was, you'd consider pve to be intrinsically competitive because you're always trying to survive in pve and "compete" with each mob you come across. But you keep telling everyone that you don't ...

I don't like action combat, and it could very potentially stop me from playing

Post by Ludullu on 2022-07-23 03:25:22

Again, there was nothing to win in those fights. My target was fighting for survival, the same as they would against a mob, and I was just fighting them as I would've any other mob. Except a mob would've given me smth for beating him, while that player gave me literally nothing, even if he died. So if anything, pve is way more rewarding than pvp, hence it's more competitive.

I don't like action combat, and it could very potentially stop me from playing

Post by Ludullu on 2022-07-23 03:57:00

I wasn't striving to win anything, nor could I win/gain anything. It wasn't an event or contest, because there was no reward for the actions we did. And my target wasn't a competitor because there was no event to compete in. So none of the realities of the situation fit the definition of a competition. But as I've said before, you could pose this as a psychological question of "whether I wanted to dominate my target", but that was never a conscious thought in my mind. You could say I thought that on a subconscious level, but at that ...

Trap based class?

Post by Ludullu on 2022-07-24 09:51:37

L2 had a "trap" class. It was mainly a ranger class, but had quite a few traps in its skillset. It had rooting, dmg, poison, stun and detargeting traps. Definitely an interesting style of gameplay, even though in my experience those traps were very rarely utilized cause their dmg/effects were nothing compared to the general ranger abilities that class had.

Regarding Animal Husbandry.....one weird question:

Post by Ludullu on 2022-07-24 09:57:33

I mean, you could just sell it for a ton of money, considering it's pristine genes. Yes, your potential buyers would go down in quantity, but that's the reality of selling something that's super exclusive. Not saying that there shouldn't be an option to prevent future breeding of your animals, but I don't think it's that big of an issue overall.

Regarding Animal Husbandry.....one weird question:

Post by Ludullu on 2022-07-24 10:34:55

Not necessarily. Just design a proper market UI where people can see the stats on the animals and you won't have insane prices on shittily-statted ones. Also, it's not like every single person can just breed a perfect replica of the animal they buy, nor would they be able to perfectly breed the genes down the line. That will require high husbandry proficiency (at least I hope it will) and I doubt that most people will go down that artisan route. I'm against monopolies, so we disagree there. Either way, we have very limited info about this system so ...

Regarding Animal Husbandry.....one weird question:

Post by Ludullu on 2022-07-24 12:02:47

I think there's a misunderstanding somewhere here. I was talking about normal people buying up mounts. Even if the mount can breed further, a normal person who just needs a mount wouldn't care about that. And if you're in the market for the top statted animals, you either have a friend breeder or have the money to buy the expensive bois. Even if we have the neutering option in the game, any high stat animal will go for a ton of money, just because that animal would've taken insane luck or a ton of hours of work (most likely ...
