Yeah, that hammer ability definitely fits this kind of mechanic, even though it's just more of a "hit this particular place" kind of thing rather than "you can hit within this range, but not directly under you", though when I think about it that's kiiiiind of the same thing?

But wouldn't you say that tab's rotations have the same mechanic? You, in theory, can win pve/pvp by just using whatever abilities you have, but the higher the skill lvl goes the more you need to know proper combinations and order of button presses. So if you look at it just from the point of view of "you can either mash and win or be more strategical about it", then I'd say that both tab and action mmo have that. At least in L2 quite a few mid pvp players would usually just use 2-3 abilities that served them ...

Because Ashes is THE TRUE 'MURRICAN GAME! IT'S ALL ABOUT FREEEEEDOM! You're free to attack or be attacked by anyone.

But that's literally what people will always do to achieve the best results. "Where there's a will, there's a way" sort of thing. No matter how well-designed the game will be, people will definitely find the most optimal way of doing things. Yes, there might be some variety depending on what your opponent does, but your responses to those actions will still be predetermined if you've decided to be the very best like no one ever was . I understand that this is not the way you play the game because you're not into hardcore challenges, but I'm pretty ...

We're already there. Just the damned "your/you're/there/their/ther/were/we're/where" alone give me an aneurism every time I see them used incorrectly. And that happens A LOT.

Yes they will be. Costumes especially. Allegedly cosmetics will be tied to your gear type (light, heavy, etc), but that doesn't really help with pvp. And we'll have an icon in our target's nameplate that indicates what kind of gear their wearing, but unless that icon is always visible (w/o clicking on the target) I personally think that cosmetics will definitely influence pvp in a bad way. But alas we live in the age of cosmetics, so they're inevitable.

It's about picking out high value targets in that 40-player crowd. If I see a 40-man raid approaching our boss farm I know there's at least 5 healers there. Considering that Ashes lets you wear any type of gear, I'd prefer to know which of those healers I should attack first, and the gear would tell me that. If I'm a ranger I might want to attack a dude in robes or light gear, if I'm a mage - a heavy dude, if I'm a rogue - robe/light would most likely be the priority. But if all I see ...

I think what Dygz meant is "trackers literally show you the best way to play which will become meta", while not having a tracker will keep you guessing for much longer. And those who do get some form of a tracker will keep the info to themselves in order to compete better with those who don't have trackers. And when there's no truly established "best way to play" - there's no real meta. Yes, there'd be trends, but those would always appear sooner or later, while trackers would just create a fast track to a fully established meta.
Post by Ludullu on 2022-07-21 22:23:53
Yeah, and the current system allows for those one-off kills here and there. But you wouldn't be able to do enough of those "one-offs" to make them into a gameplay style, because each kill will get you deeper and deeper into shit. Which is why we say that being Red is not an intended form of gameplay. And if they only operate around their freehold then as soon as any BHer learns about that, they won't be able to do anything, because the BHer will just camp their ass. Or any pvper willing to help out weaker players will ...

If Intrepid stays with their goal of forbidding addons - those youtubers will get banned Again though, the tracker will just give you objectively best way to do smth, which then becomes meta. It does not counter meta in any way, it defines it. And if ranger-summoner did more dmg than ranger-rogue, yet it wasn't meta - that only tells me that w/o a tracker people wouldn't figure out the best way to do dps and once they hit content that requires best dps - they'll have to try more stuff, which would literally mean destroying meta. And this ...

I'm talking in the context of people doing pve/pvp which requires your best dps to properly clear. This kind of content doesn't appeal to you so obviously you wouldn't care about this kind of stuff, but Noaani being one of the biggest PvErs here and also a big proponent of meters just tells me that anyone who wants to be at the top would follow the meter religiously. And the data would be objective because people would be testing stuff out until they found the biggest numbers. And meters would provide the fastest way to get to those numbers, ...

I mean, "a hugeass dragon" will require "hugeass dps". And you can truly know where to get that dps if you use a meter. And the dps itself will require a proper build on a proper class that is using proper abilities in a proper order (mainly for best resource management) in combination with several other people who're doing the same thing. Again, you don't appreciate hardcore content as much as someone like Noaani does so of course you wouldn't see the value in meters. But you're both playing RPGs, just on different sides of their spectrum. Or at ...

Ok then, a simple question: can a lvl 1 "whateverclass" kill the "final boss" in any d&d campaign? Or does that lvl 1 dude need to acquire some abilities and level up their stats and maybe get a few friends and then properly use all those resource in order to defeat the boss?

There, fixed it for you
Post by Ludullu on 2022-07-22 00:12:08
Any encounter pretty much comes down to resource management (in the widest meaning of that definition). If your character has 10hp and 5def and the opponent does 11dmg against 6def - u ded in 1 hit. But if you buff up your def, drink a potion for more hp, use a -atk debuff on the enemy and hit him with smth strong w/o going over your mana value - u'll probably survive. Now extrapolate this kind of "equation" to the size of a raid and to the complexity and difficulty of a boss that, supposedly, only a fraction of ...

At this point I dearly hope that Ashes does in fact have such a difficult boss that guilds will not make any farming videos about it, while still farming it successfully. At which point I'd ask Mag to explain to me how ez it would be to "just show video proof" for the complexity of the boss Doubt that'll happen though
Post by Ludullu on 2022-07-22 00:25:33
Just to amuse myself I shall ask you this. Who would make those guides? Could it, per chance, be the exact people I was talking about? The ones who'll be the very first to beat the boss? The ones who might wipe on said boss over a dozen times just to figure out how to beat it, exactly because FOR THEM there wouldn't be any guides to follow?

That 16th comment is really nostalgic remember countless such comments for countless people on forum L2's threads back in the day.

Soooo what you're telling me is that EXACTLY this would happen, right?
Post by Ludullu on 2022-07-22 01:10:41
And Noaani's whole personality on this forum is built around being the person who'd have the ability to create such videos, while your entire personality is of the person who'd just wait for them instead of PARTICIPATING IN COMPETITIVE PVE to be the first one to release such a video You keep asking Noaani for video proof of boss complexity, but if, by any chance, Ashes has bosses that a difficult enough to wipe top lvl guilds several times over, you wouldn't be able to know about that complexity because you wouldn't be a part of such guilds, while ...

Oh, and on the topic of streams, even in L2, top guilds would either forbid streaming during sieges/boss farms or would at least require 10+ minute delay, because showing your stuff is detrimental. So I could definitely see how something like Noaani's hardcore pvp guild would literally kick you if you were to start up a stream during an important raid.

I should've made my point clearer. I'm against the high speed that trackers provide to the players who want to get to the "real" meta. The things you said literally tell me "once the people know who does more dmg - that's gonna be the meta and anyone who's not that class won't be welcome". And I want to delay that moment as much as I can. Yes, there'll be some meta as soon as people start thinking about who's stronger. But it won't be cemented for a while because someone somewhere will be testing stuff and will figure ...

I want none of that, I'm just being realistic about what's gonna happen despite Devs' wishes. No matter how well Intrepid balances their classes, there'll be some combination of them that will do the most damage compared to any other combination. And gear augments/builds will probably be enough to counterbalance any boss variability (unless Intrepid want people to have full accounts of alts to properly fight bosses). I asked about lvl1 fighting the final boss because I was leading up to the thing I wrote in another post here - "the resource management in a fight". Knowledge being one ...

I hope this design stays around and works out how they want it to, because to me this just sounds like "pvp on the boss to stop others from farming it, until the world setup makes you your strongest and you can kill the boss" That's what I'd like to have in the game, but I'm not sure how many people would like that.
Post by Ludullu on 2022-07-22 05:10:35
A lot of that will depend on how Intrepid balances corruption gain and how hard/expensive the quest for PK count removal will be. And if both of those are on the harsher side, the PKers could just be attacked by plain green players, at which point it'd be a question of whether your guild/friends are ready to gain corruption themselves. In L2 there were no BHs. You'd just get killed by other players, so I don't see why that wouldn't be the case in a game that rewards Red killings way more than L2 did. And as for "rare ...
Post by Ludullu on 2022-07-22 05:23:35
I hope it's that way and I hope that Intrepid can balance their pve content in such a way that "each of every arch" is optimal, but could be tweaked a bit by replacing one or two people with some double class or simply by changing augments. But we'll have to see. I'm used to having people in my constant party rather than just classes that are free to be switched out, so I'd be completely fine with Ashes going down the same balancing route. And I've made my main class work through several updates where it was nerfed, ...

I think this is the important part that a lot of people seem to forget/disregard. If there's a super complex ow Boss out there and only one elite guild has been running it until they manage to finally beat him, literally all the other guilds will have no clue how they beat him (that is, if the elite guild manages to protect that info through pvp obviously). And now you have an elite guild that's even stronger because they're the only ones who can farm a boss. I think the discussion so far has been mainly about "there's several ...

At the very least it's 0.4% because every server will have at least one guild that will be doing this. I could recount that to fit it better with the alleged 50k per server number, but I doubt this will be the reality of the game.

I was talking in the context of guild vs guild fighting for bosses, not just randoms gathering together. And in that context it'll probably be same groups of people with the same classes knowing exactly their peak strength or building themselves for a particular world setup (i.e. fire mages waiting for a sunny summer day or lightning mages waiting for an autumn/spring thunderstorm). And they'd be fighting anyone else trying to kil the boss right up until the proper world setup runs around. At least that's the approach I'd take if I was trying to make a hardcore pve ...
