I fucking hate it with the biggest and brightest burning passion possible. The world would be better off w/o it, if not for its monetization. It's a necessary evil.

It's not even about ddosing. It's just about servers not keeping up with the demand. And that demand can be enforced by people going to a particular server. If people see that esports is coming in the way of the MMO part of the game - quite a lot of people will complain and might even do what Noaani suggests. Now there's a little problem of "how would they know", but I guess that joining an arena queue (cause there'll always be one) and seeing how fast/slow you get a game would indicate how many people are playing the ...

But what if those BiS sets are so damn hard to acquire that seeing one in the wild is wonderous? And what if every new expansion adds those wonderous sets even before the decent minority of top lvl players were able to get their hands on the previous BiS gear?

BiS gear will come from crafting that will require mats from open world bosses. Open world bosses means pvp, which means that only a select few will get their hands on best gear. And on top of that you'll need to repair said gear, which will decrease the overall quantity of the sets. So Ashes will be exactly the game where you will see BiS sets veeeery rarely. This is not fucking WoW where you can just sit in the same instanced dungeon until you drop what you need, w/o anyone else standing in your way.

This is just yet another issue and reason why most people here argue so much against your points. You come at this discussion from the pov of an esporter who's only thinking of how Ashes would/could/should implement esports into its design. While pretty much everyone else comes from the pov of mmo players who just want a good mmo and couldn't give fewer shits about esport arena battling. The arena can only be cross-server if it provides gear or puts a cap on how high of a tier you can use. The former goes against the current Ashes design ...

I care about them when they can influence the game I'm playing. And as has been explained before, they can and will influence the mmo itself, if implemented in the way that was suggested in this thread. And the suggestions of providing equalized gear or full level ups of alt chars to the max level go directly against "playing the mmo". Also, how exactly do you imagine queuing for the arena while running around the open world? Can you get TPed to the arena while fighting a mob? While gathering a resource? While pvping another player? While crafting something? ...

So even if you were fighting a weak mob, you'd still die and get death penalties that might set you back several hours of progress. Definitely doesn't sound like a good solution. My only need is for arenas to not be separated from the mmo. Your core premise doesn't work with that.

Automatically dying because you got pulled into the arena would probably feel bad for most people. And punishing players for exiting queue because they got into trouble while waiting would feel doubly bad. So you either auto-kick them from the queue if they enter combat or just hope that they won't be dumb enough to make themselves feel bad. In either case players would probably just stand around waiting for queue rather than doing anything meaningful. Also, I'd assume the arena would only be accessible through an npc in a node above some stage (probably 3+), cause if it's ...

Here's an open world arena (with closing doors if needed) from L2. People had player/GM-made tournaments here and private training/practice matches whenever they wanted. The game had several more smaller arenas near some cities. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcZ0utTDT3g Imo there's no reason to separate this kind of gameplay from the game. Well, in the context of it being within the game's rules rather than "get anything and everything you want and test it".

I had an idea for server queues that could provide a way for people to see the gameplay of any archetype w/o spending hundreds of hours, but my idea only provided the basic non-augmented archetype abilities, so it wouldn't serve as a proper training platform. And my idea would still be completely separated from the game or its characters, though it would be in-client. In the context of mmo esports, I'd assume that any given high end pvping would require thousands of hours of investment into the game (be it just pvp or the game as a whole). Ashes ...

Leveling the playing field in instanced PvP

Post by Ludullu on 2022-12-22 22:03:47

I was thinking of a basic top lvl non-class archetype character that could try out any weapon, the three basic types of armor and would have a training dummy, a mob or two and could then, ideally, get into an instanced castle siege with other players in queue so that people could try pvping each other with their chosen setup. If my super basic surface lvl knowledge of how mmos work is correct, this kind of thing wouldn't have to put big strain on the main game servers. And the non-castle part could in fact be purely client-side so ...

You can test augments whenever you want because you can change classes of your character. Same with any type of gear. You'd just have to work for it, just as any other player would. But you can't simply change your archetype, which is why I think that providing a way to see how an archetype plays on higher lvls would be completely fine.

I'd prefer if stealth classes had a single ability that did 50% of max hp out of stealth. Everything else would just fit the "30s-1m ttk" design. And obviously some other classes could provide debuffs that would increase incoming damage to their victim, so that rogue attack would do more dmg, but it'd be happening in a party situation so your healer should be prepared to save you from that kind of attack.

You can transfer resources on ships and a lot of Ashes' design relies on resource transfers being contested. So naval combat is a requirement. Right now we don't know what the arena ladder rewards will be, but unless those rewards will be one of a kind and only acquirable through arenas - removal of arenas wouldn't influence anything in the game. While removing the whole damn ocean and/or rivers would impact the entire world of the game and several potential content designs.

Yeah, Steven's broad strokes of design can definitely be an issue for the game in the long run. There's a chance that Steven liked arenas from L2 and AA and, while I don't know what AA arenas had for rewards, L2's arenas gave veeeery strong rewards, which was both a justification of their design and an issue of what those rewards resulted in. So I think that AoC arenas' value and reason for existing will mainly depend on what they'll provide to the players. And imo they can be designed in such a way where they're not a detriment ...

Remove leveling up or make it harder and fun

Post by Ludullu on 2022-12-23 18:44:19

As much as I'd want this and would love it, in this day and age the absolute majority would just go look up a guide and there'd probably be some 3rd party app that tells you what to do step by step. The only way to avoid that is to completely randomize word/action requirements of personal quests. The main quest line could be the same and simple, but every other quest would have random details that can't be put into a guide. But I'm, like, 90% sure people would COMPLAIN at length if this was the case

Grinding/Farming for profession and Jobs

I love grinding. Imo there should always be some amount of grinding in mmos, but there should be enough variety to that grinding and enough alternative ways to get what you want, so that you like the grind rather than consider it all boring and pointless. Any and all games that require you to do any type of activity for longer than an hour or two (though even those can be considered too much) will have grind in them. It's just that some people like that grind so they don't call the activity that.

There's a thin line for Intrepid to walk when it comes to the "this ain't for you" approach. If we assume that Intrepid do in fact want to mainly target the older audience who remember old mmos and might even love their designs, we should also consider that not all of those old mmos were the same. So while some oldschooler might think fondly of long quest texts that didn't give you a direction, the other oldschooler would only remember the days of grinding they had to do because they couldn't be bothered to read those texts. Both of ...

That's my whole point though. His target audience are the people who remember those old mmos that were exactly as you described. But for those people the life is now different, so even if they preferred those kinds of games before, they physically can't do the same stuff now. And like I said, the corruption system is there to prevent mass killings of people who're just chilling and as for grind, Steven did say that they want to try and move away from the repetitive design of pve grind. And the sees are not full loot, they just have ...

The New World Pitfall

Post by Ludullu on 2022-12-25 02:11:19

I'd assume they won't try to avoid that in the early game, because low lvl artisanry (or at least low lvl gathering) will be available to everyone but will also require the most resources, so everyone gathering stuff will properly fit into the demand for those low lvl resources. And at higher lvls everyone will go down their own artisan paths, so everything will be split up amongst the players.
