Gear size as well as the way the gear is held should make sense in the context of race.

I mean, that very link says they'll resize the weapons, so your wish is already granted. Which means that the hammer is just designed that way. And that an orc holding that hammer would have an even bigger weapon in his hands. Yeah, I'm probably wrong and as the link above points out, they had already planned to resize the weapons.

YES! @Vaknar relay this to the team. Even a 1-minute showcase of "this is the current vfx and this is it diminished by 90% through a "slider"" would be amazing!

I want a pvp game where I can counter play my enemy and they can counter play me. I want every archetype to have a mana control ability of some sort (i.e. mana vamp, mana conversion, mana drain, mana burn, etc etc etc). I want mobs to have the same and use it often. I understand that a lot of people seem to hate when the opponent can influence their gameplay, but isn't that the fucking point of a good pvp game? Play and counterplay? To me a stamina or "every class with their own resource" system seems anti-pvp. ...

Could it be programmed for mobs to start using ranged attacks and slow/root-type abilities way more often as soon as they get closer to each other? I'd assume this would deter most people from trying to train mobs. Most of the time you'd have a party sitting in one place and a runner going around picking up mobs, right? So just program the mobs in such a way where that runner is super likely to die if they pick up more than 3-4 mobs. The same could apply to mounted runthroughs too. By the time you get far in ...

Except L2 only had mana. And we already had mana-based sprinting in alpha1, so it's not like Ashes is too far from something like that. It's the same principle in both cases. You think your destination might have enemies? Prepare for it instead of wasting your resources beforehand.

Then I guess I'll need to watch more TL gameplay or I'm just blind to the intricacies of the differences between the two games, cause I mainly saw people just standing in TL and pumping healing potions. And boss battles seemed like L2, where you just stand in one place unloading onto the boss. Yes, there were a few backdashes from the ranged characters, but that's literally the same as moving to the side against those storm mobs in the tank showcase that did a 5-directional (I think it was 5) lightning strike. I'm just way too skeptic when ...

BIG Question from Tank Video: No After-Combat Recovery Abils/Food? Is Slow Recovery Better?

Post by Ludullu on 2023-01-29 23:26:36

I'd like to have a mobile "bonfire" mechanic. You come to a dungeon, come up to your room and setup a cooking pot on a bonfire in the corridor outside of mobs' agro. You then add whatever food buff you want to the pot and go out to farm the mobs. The buff can last for however long (probably dependent on the quality and lvl of food used) and can be changed with a particular action, so that coming back is not only "not a single click" but is also not a "just sit and do nothing". I think ...

I guess I just disagree with that kind of design. I'll live if the game decides to go with more stamina-based mechanics or even special resources, but I'd just prefer a universal system that has way more depth of interactions. Easily explained by "essence gives you power". Everyone uses essence and essence is used in different ways. You have a hugeass plate armor and want to run? Use essence to boost your muscles. You're wearing a super light armor and already have a dexterous build? You obviously use less essence and can run for way longer. You're a fucking ...

Combat feels too static

Ok, I see your point now and understand the difference. And now I completely agree. Mob mechanics should definitely be way more meaningful than they were in the showcase and they should be reactable to support that meaningfulness. I could maybe let pvp be on the faster side, because I'm used to super fast speeds of cast/atk in L2's max lvls (and the purely response-and-prediction-based gameplay of it, rather than truly reactionary one), but for a good pve you definitely gotta have better design than what we saw.

Combat feels too static

Post by Ludullu on 2023-01-29 23:59:08

Yeah, there's a simplistic beauty in rooted combat. You rely on each other more instead of just blaming everyone for not doing their job correctly. And I think that's part of the reason why WoW and FF14 are so popular. Though WoW's mechanics becoming more and more chaotic and pushing people to move constantly (if what I remember of them is correct) seems to feed that exact toxicity you mentioned in relation to free movement games. For all its super basic pve, L2's parties always felt like small families within the larger "town" of a guild. And then this ...

Then they should make it so. Release showcases quarterly instead of each month. Give each showcase a bit more time instead of doing them lastminute due to unforeseen circumstances. I'm sure people would be fine if instead of a shitty stream or two they'd instead get an amazing one every 3rd month. If Intrepid can't keep up with a self-imposed limitation of "a transparent development" - they might want to change the pace. After all this talk from Steven of "we gotta show the best possible form of our content because some people won't understand otherwise" and all the ...

Yes, our standards are just a bit higher than average. Intrepid is trying to do something that pretty much no other company has managed to do. And imo they need to do their best if they want to achieve their goal. I also like the chill vibes of their gameplay and if you look at my second comment in the tank feedback thread - you'll see that I liked the showcase and desperately wanted to play the alpha already. But I'd also prefer if Intrepid did better, because I know they can (the redone video showed that). Also, I ...

This is why I want the whole system to be deeper than just "you have stamina. It has a certain rate of burnthrough. You have a certain regen rate". The weapon passives could have branches and augments that relate to mana. Shield blocking could have a branch of "make a perfect block and lose less mana per dmg point" or a "holding the block decreases mana/point values with each second". The first would be for those with good reactions, while the second could work perfectly for more casual people, but they'd obviously have to sacrifice ability usage while holding ...

Orrrr, it's just how they designed that hammer and you just dislike it Well yes, it is. It's literally a different world with different laws of nature and abilities available to that world's creatures. That's the whole point of a fantasy - it has things that seem unnatural in our world. Otherwise it's literally just our world. Hell, if we had magic (or even exoskeletons), I'm sure we'd go for bigger tools too. Or at least our current bigger tools would be swung way faster and would appear way lighter because of that.

Most of the time I promote restrictive gameplay that is directly linked to already existing designs, so that the design becomes deeper instead of broader and shallower. I also don't want Intrepid to keep balancing several resource pools, one of which might even be completely separated from anything else in the game. Like I keep saying, I want people to influence each other. Keeping systems restricted allows for better balancing for those influences. And it allows to not have 50 abilities that account for any potential interactions with resources. I know that most people don't want other players to ...

This is exactly what quite a few of people seem to want. I personally want that second video to be their standard of livestream quality. And they managed to do that in just a few hours, so my questions would be "what exactly stopped them from pre-planning the livestream for AT LEAST a single day before the stream itself"? It would've literally let them to make that second video their first and this entire mess of feedback would not exist. That is my issue. I want them to do better for their own good. Vocal minority can influence perceived ...

Tanks need plenty more to control than just threat

Post by Ludullu on 2023-01-31 02:13:23

The threat could just come from not only using "taunt", but from protecting others. So literally just tank doing its job of "preventing their mates from taking dmg". So mobs could move agro more often, but good protection from the tank would reagro the mob onto them. Oh! Taunt-based abilities could have a diminishing return, with weaker and weaker effects proportional to mob's HP. So this would provide natural danger to the party the lower the mob goes, even w/o giving the mob an "enrage" mechanic. And then the tank could regain their agro by protecting others with particular ...

Tanks need plenty more to control than just threat

Post by Ludullu on 2023-01-31 02:22:41

Yeah, the design would have to be more transparent. And there could be the issue of x/tank classes having even more problems with keeping aggro because they might not have the proper defending abilities. Though alternatively, they could either have them in the augments pool or it would be intentional to keep the tank archetype relevant. I remember you saying that FF11's classes could tank just through a proper build and party play. Did the tank classes had any way to bring back their aggro in a non-taunt way? Or was that the exact issue and the reason for ...

Post by Ludullu on 2023-01-31 02:44:13

You know my experience is super limited. Are there games that have in-depth player to player (or even pve) interactions with the stamina system? Obviously outside of the obvious "they're about to hit you so you spend stamina to block or dodge". I'd imagine there might be at least a few or just those that have this kind of mechanic functionally. And I want that kind of depth in Ashes. It could come in the form of "some of your abilities also influence stamina" or it could come in the form of "you have some abilities that influence stamina". ...

Tanks need plenty more to control than just threat

Post by Ludullu on 2023-01-31 03:07:48

So yeah, this is pretty much what I want, except that at, say, half hp the mob would definitely switch to others, because all tank abilities outside of the "protect" ones would only generate the "taunt threat", so the boss would definitely switch to other players once this taunt diminishes completely. And then the tank would have to use several protective abilities to regain the aggro for the final %s of HP. FF11 let you use other abilities in the mean time, while I want those abilities to only keep the taunt, while the protective abilities would generate general ...

Would %-based usage of mana for movement/blocking lead to that homogenization or would it be the same as stamina, except with the ability of others to limit your movement/blocking? We know that Ashes will at least somewhat rely on basic attacks, so it's not like any class will suddenly become absolutely useless w/o mana. And with a proper passives design you could have different balancing for different classes. From "physical classes have lowered rate of mana use below a certain threshold" to "magic classes getting mana regen boosts from movement when below a certain threshold" and anything in-between and ...

Tanks need plenty more to control than just threat

Post by Ludullu on 2023-01-31 03:27:56

Yeah, coming from a better deeper game can definitely be difficult. It's the same for me with pvp. I consider L2's pvp to be perfect (even if it might not be for most), so coming to pretty much any other game with their different, usually worse, system is an utter pain. But overall then we pretty much agree on a better design for tanks rather than a super simple tank and spank. Whichever form that takes is a whole different discussion and probably one for a later date (if it even happens in Ashes at all).

Because one person can hold both positions. If anything, it's the positions from this quote that make me hold the positions from the OP. I want Intrepid to present their game in the best way possible, so that the "silent majority" can see a proper alpha for a proper great game.
