Do you feel like Ashes is missing races?

Post by SongRune on 2022-05-07 04:31:20

I don't like the idea of an "alts only" race. (i.e. one I can only unlock by already having chosen something else on my main.) They would just feel like they are "denied to me", more or less, in an entirely arbitrary way. If I had an affinity for one, I would have to go do extra work in a form I didn't like as much just to unlock the one I preferred. Specifically not investing in my character along the path to that, would kind of sour my initial experience with the game, and poison future interactions. It ...

Do you feel like Ashes is missing races?

Post by SongRune on 2022-05-07 13:30:33

The thing is, I don't like the idea of changing my race mid-game either. My race is an important part of my character, and it's hard to imagine "race changes" that aren't fundamental shifts to my self-perception was a whole. You might manage a smaller one through story, but even with a solid story, a more significant one would just feel wrong. I'm not looking to suddenly become a different person, nor deal with the "body morph" storyline overall. Even well executed, such a shift would be jarring at best. I can't solve the problem that way.

Server transfers should be free (at least in language diverse regions) + servers need language tags

Post by SongRune on 2022-05-08 12:11:36

That's a good point actually. I feel really bad for anyone who's claiming their name registration on a particular server, only to find out later that nobody with their language joined it at launch. It's hard to research that in advance, and if your name is taken elsewhere, you can't even transfer. Language tags are a must.

Job Profession: Trader

Post by SongRune on 2022-05-19 14:02:46

I'm not a fan of "adding special restrictions to trading, so that players can level up the ability to not be restricted". There will already be players that specialize in trade, that learn the supply chains for their area, that focus on moving goods to where they're needed and extracting a profit from the process. All of these things are achievable without a mechanical profession, and the personal skill, market knowledge, and time and resource investment from the player will determine strongly how much they can gain from their efforts. All of these skills and developed edges already exist ...

Furnishing Ships

Post by SongRune on 2022-05-19 17:19:51

That sounds spectacular, but it might be pretty harsh if another player destroys your ship. One of the factors of risk and reward in player housing is the chance for node destruction to cause you to lose your house. I'm not sure Steven would allow people to just bypass that risk aspect, so between that, and the fact that any kind of mobile storage facility can't be safer than caravans, "house boats" might not be immune to attack. It's a bit more than I'm into, but I can see how some people might take it. I'll definitely hope for ...

Discussion; secondary class doesn't matter.

Post by SongRune on 2022-05-22 18:59:28

As a Bard, I dislike this concept. Give me weaker buffs that I can sustain. I don't want to have to dance between different random bursts of varying buffs. This just denies me the ability to control the flow of battle. It becomes a dance of trying to time different abilities so that other's abilities can chain with them. It's not shifting the flow of battle by changing the balance of strengths and weaknesses between my allies and my enemies. This is feels to me like a burst-damage mage, but in buff form, requiring me to time my micro-buffs ...

One of the character hair colors I use fairly often is a relatively light pink. Will this hair color be restricted to a particular dye or race in ashes?

As a person who will try to navigate every last part of the map in my attempts to get to that one cool spot, I hate the idea of a kill hazard. I really liked the fire wall from Alpha 1, but I can see how it'd be a little odd at sea. Maybe a "tsunami wall" there?

[Feedback Request] Seasonal Tech Discussed in May Livestream

Post by SongRune on 2022-05-27 20:03:26

That was spectacular. There's nothing left to say. Everything that you just showed us is exactly what the game should be. I've been concerned, and posted before about the incredibly immersive sound of footsteps in wet terrain, and the sound and experience of rain falling, so hearing both will be in there, and expecting interactions with wind as well, I'm ready to log in. Like @Azherae , I'm from FFXI (as far as meaningful weather goes), and you've got it covered. I've had experiences there that just suck me in immediately, and with everything I've seen, I expect to ...

Aggressive Weather

Post by SongRune on 2022-05-28 21:37:39

Steven has said clearly and repeatedly that weather will have an impact on our abilities. They explained on the last stream that seasons/weather can affect creature spawns and behavior. With the discussion of bosses affecting weather, in combination with the fact that weather affects player abilities, it's all but certain they'll affect boss abilities too. I think we're on track for exactly these sorts of experiences.

Dynamic World

Post by SongRune on 2022-05-30 00:01:27

I don't entirely disagree, but even still, you went from 500 bunnies in all the fields in the region, to 50 on the tops of a few mountains. There'll be an economic impact there regardless, even if they're highly sought after. There are now fewer of them, so supply is restricted and can't meet the same demand as it once did. (Obviously this can be negated by poor tuning, but why assume poor tuning? They'd just fix it.) They are now more work to get to (having to go climb whatever mountain and deal with whatever mobs guard it, ...

Dynamic World

Post by SongRune on 2022-05-30 16:13:40

BDO did this once, for an event. It's not that they spawned randomly and freely, but that they spawned in unusual locations (specific to the event). It was mostly just annoying. While encountering a world boss in the wild would be somewhat memorable, having them spawn in random locations just made it difficult to assemble people to fight them. This sort of thing would work great for "secret" bosses that only spawn more rarely (to be sighted by explorers) , but for world bosses that people will be fighting on the regular? It's only good in theory.

World Drops

Post by SongRune on 2022-05-30 17:00:52

These sorts of things make great anime. But as soon as the person who gets it isn't into combat (mainly crafting), doesn't realize what they have (and throw it into storage), gets distracted by life (or frustrated by part of the quest), everything starts to fail. And that's before you get to the person it dropped for just being an asshole or all the related options.

Even still, it's good to be cautious about one's expectations of persistence. The purpose of Alphas (and even Betas, though the context is different) is to find bugs and work through any unexpected issues that may come up. I have no doubt that the team will try to aim for persistence (they even did this to a limited degree in Alpha 1, when they had made no promise to), it's not unreasonable to expect that there may be some resets from time to time as things develop.

Question: Farming/Bossing During Seasonal Transitions

Post by SongRune on 2022-05-31 02:05:14

The most obvious and simplest way to code it would be to not change the boss, but still have their abilities be affected by the environment (just as players abilities are): The Ice Dragon will stay an Ice Dragon, but as the snow melts for Spring, their Ice attacks will do less damage, and their "Freeze" effects will not linger as long. The result of this would be that you still defeated an Ice Dragon (just an Ice Dragon at the very edge of it's natural habitat), and would still be rewarded for that. They might still do something ...

Not enough map space for 1 freehold per account.

Post by SongRune on 2022-05-31 13:35:04

My own calculations disagree. (ref: Wiki: Servers > Server Population ) (ref: Wiki: Freeholds ) (ref: Wiki: World map > World size ) According to Google , 1 Acre is 0.00404686 km², making a freehold 0.00404686 km² / 2 = 0.00202343 km². (Unfortunately, arsnn was off by an order of magnitude on this constant when they tried to do similar math.) Based on this map , the world seems to be about 60% land. We're gonna call it 50%, in order to simplify the math, and be slightly conservative. If we get to the point where the numbers are ...

Not enough map space for 1 freehold per account.

Post by SongRune on 2022-05-31 15:19:37

Entirely correct. My apologies. Rerunning my math from step 4, I get a quite different result. 4. With only 50% land (see above), we now have 237221/2 = 118610.5 freehold plots worth of space. 5. With 50,000 registered accounts per server, this leaves us with enough room to grant each player 118610.5 / 50000 = 2.37221 freeholds. Put another way, (1/2.37221 = ) 42.2% of the map would be occupied by freeholds if all players chose to have one, leaving 57.8% of the map free for node structures, wilderness, grind spots, and everything else. From this perspective I agree ...

PvP and Gameplay

Post by SongRune on 2022-05-31 18:42:08

We have indeed not heard much about combat. They're still doing a redesign, and keeping it entirely secret for the moment. There's been no indication of them dropping either Action or Tab combat, though. "Hybrid" is still on the table. Here's a rather long wiki page on the lore of Ashes of Creation.

Going Red

Post by SongRune on 2022-06-01 15:22:52

Let's assume that it does. Now he's taken damage. Now he starts gathering again. Now you have to hit him again. Do this enough times, and you're red. He doesn't have to hit back. If you want to say "well a mob will finish him", then I'll just point out he might already have damage from a mob, and you'll last-hit without realizing. (This is specifically intended, and why Steven has said you will not see other player's HP levels.)

Character GLOW EFFECTS

Post by SongRune on 2022-06-03 19:16:21

In BDO, when I use a particular buff, my character's hands glow in a way similar to your first picture. In combat, I don't really even notice because there's too much going on visually. If combat ends, the glowing hands just look silly, to me. The effect isn't really overdone or anything either. I think I just don't like the idea, personally, but I don't mind if there's a setting to turn it off. That said, I'm almost on board with the bard one, as a bard myself. It sounds like a useful indicator, but it seems complicated. Getting ...

That whole discussion aside, can you show me where I went wrong? It would help me at least to understand the context of this discussion if you could show me where specifically we disagree. I tried to be conservative and state (and cite) all of my assumptions, so I'm hoping it's straightforward to correct. I'm not perfect though, so let me know if anything's unclear and I'll try to resolve it. My post with my assumptions & citations My post with the correction to my arithmetic (I figure this is less important than the one with my assumptions.) @Sheeta ...

Not enough map space for 1 freehold per account.

Thanks! Even if we cut the size of a freehold in half, that's still a bit much, but I didn't realize the map size was more of a guess than a statement. The Q&A question may be almost the only way forward.

Server Merges

Post by SongRune on 2022-06-06 03:07:16

The problem with this, is that server population affects far more than computing requirements. It affects... - Economic patterns & resource balances - Competition for grind spots (particularly problematic in the early levels, before anyone can spread out) - The noise level of world or area chat - Competition for node housing Even if players spread out to account for this, if a large number of initial players leave, the remaining spread out players are now left with far fewer people in their nodes and areas than they should naturally have, and going from "wow there are too many ...

Furniture durability

Post by SongRune on 2022-06-07 13:56:05

I was going to comment in this thread earlier, about how I didn't like the idea of my furniture just wearing out over time, but I also didn't want to lose everything in a node siege defeat (and I didn't think they planned to go that way anyway). As a carpenter, though, I didn't really have a good solution. I LOVE this. Having durability lost when nodes or freeholds are destroyed results in not having that same "horrible loss" feeling, particularly if the loss is random or staggered so not all of my items wear out at once. At ...

Furniture durability

Post by SongRune on 2022-06-07 14:01:24

I have to just expand on this to say that this ties the loss or quality/appearance decrease to a real concrete, visceral player experience. Having to constantly upkeep your stuff to stop your house from looking shabby, just because time passed is on the level of maintenance buffs, and is just an all-around poor experience. Having something like this, where the change is based on "my node/house got wrecked, what's salvageable here?" makes it more engaging and immersive, as well as connecting to a meaningful experience, rather than just a recurring punishment for having been playing for a month ...

Controller Support? Will AOC have some kind of controller support like the steam-controller?

Post by SongRune on 2022-06-09 03:29:58

I mean, you get 32 skills for 'free'. L1+[any of 8 face buttons], L2+[any of 8 face buttons], R1+[any of 8 face buttons], R2+[any of 8 face buttons]. And even that leaves all face buttons (alone) free for jump dodge roll, whatever. I figure that if they want to add controller support, "oops I have too many hotbar slots" won't be their big limitation. That said: ref

I implore the devs to work on archetypes and classes before it's too late.

Post by SongRune on 2022-06-09 13:31:26

The "big plan" after Alpha 1 was a full combat revamp. We don't know anything about how it's doing because they've moved away from transparent development (for perfectly legitimate reasons, imo), but between that and the fact that Alpha 2 is supposed to have all archetypes available, along with some secondary archetypes and augments ( ref ), I feel it's reasonable to conclude that they are working on it.

How important is voice acting for YOUR immersion?

Post by SongRune on 2022-06-10 13:56:07

It's normally negative, to me. It creates jarring transitions between the interactions that have it, and the ones that don't. It's not feasible to give it to shops, or every minor quest or in game interaction to try to offset this, and the quality requirement for it not to feel strange is high. It's then FAR worse if you have my own character speak. Unless you manage a voice I can consider my own, and then match my feelings, tone, inflection, it is going to immediately shift me out of phase with my own character, and push me out ...
