I think Teleport will be the Meta

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-27 16:59:05

1. Only Scientific type metropolis get teleportation. 2. They probably don't have to spend a Policy choice on it, because it's an innate property of the node type. 3. There is no player choice in node type: "Node types are predetermined and are the same across all servers.[7]" . It can't really be a meta if it's not something you can choose.

Question regarding Alpha/Beta access

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-27 17:15:29

The previous Alpha 1 was a series of weekend or single day tests in the lead up to the actual main Alpha 1 testing. The main Alpha 1 testing was largely continuous for the entire month, with occasional downtime for updates or fixes. I would personally expect Alpha 2, and the betas, to be similar in structure. The main difference would be less wipes. I don't believe it is fully decided exactly how long each of those upcoming Alpha/Beta periods will be, or exactly how close to release.

Non PvP Buff for Starter and after Raids, Sieges and other PvP Encounters except Caravans and Duels

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-27 23:22:41

Someone will find a way to exploit "You can have a lv9 alt that can't be PvPd ever." Carrying materials, perhaps? I could see the "5 minutes after a siege" I guess, to give people time to disperse a little. I'm not sure how useful it'll be since people will just follow you, and it can't be longer for similar reasons. But if you're looking for "people to have the initial experience that represents the game", getting PvP'd at spawn, then someone bounty-hunting your Red is a pretty solid intro to "what Ashes is". If they do decide to ...

What race and class will you pick and why?

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-28 01:14:35

Empyrian - Py'rai was my original sorta-expectation, but I'm not interested in having antlers. Bard/ - I'm a Bard, so I'll play Bard. Pretty simple. /Rogue - I'm expecting Stealth and Mobility options, possibly along with bleed or crippling style augments. or /Ranger - For mobility, possibly trap-laying, or things that would enable a sniping playstyle, depending on the sorts of situations my party gets into. Getting into and out of position for things is going to be important, I hope, and I'm not a pure backline type of person either way. The ability to get into or out ...

Hey, it's not me asking for it. And now that I've read the quotes about the looting free-for-all, I can't even support 5 minutes, cause it'd mess with that. That's absolutely long enough to be abused, and not even a little bit. Once you get past an 20-30 minutes, things are already iffy. And that's the problem. If you have time to get more than like one node from your starting point, someone's gonna manage to abuse it. For material transport between those first two nodes, if nothing else. And in the end, that's why the system is impractical. ...

Non-Combatant attacking Corrupted

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-28 02:04:16

Not really. Greens still die. Bounty hunters are not just "players who turn on bounty hunting mode", they're the TYPE of player that turns on bounty hunting mode. Not all greens are gonna go after every red they see, risk XP debt, material drops, etc. If they're in the area and prepared to specifically hunt reds, they're a bounty hunter type of person whether they flagged the quest or not. This isn't "bounty hunters lose out on the action", it's just "a different bounty hunter got there first".

Character Names: Realism or NøT

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-28 03:25:01

One of the core design principles for some of the intended risk/reward tradeoffs relative to player behavior is that player reputation will matter. If there are six players with the same name, in Discord style, where you have to specifically poke them to see the difference? A good player is gonna get punished based on a bad rep they don't deserve, and a bad player is going to get away with things based on a good rep they don't deserve. While this solution works in environments where uniqueness of names isn't critical in the primary "at a glance" case, ...

I hope we don't have something so simplistic as generic racial accents. I definitely don't mind regional trends, but it'd be a bit odd if all or even most members of a race sounded the same. A Dunir and Empyrian who grew up as neighbors in a Kaelar city or region probably shouldn't have their separate stereotypical racial accents, or at least have a much lighter version of them if their parents had strong ones, and I had better be able to find an Empyrian with a strong Dunir accent because they just recently moved to my region from ...

Yes and no. There won't be heavy voice acting, but accents are likely to be clear. (ref: Voice acting )

Maximum range on lock-on ranged attacks

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-29 03:40:16

For stuff with "slightly slow" shot speed that makes it matter in the first place, and long range, I don't mind if it fails if they dodge. It's no different than missing any other skillshot based on positioning (in this case range). High shot speed, or shorter range stuff, I prefer it hits.

Alpha 2 testing from Asia

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-29 15:18:14

Contrary to what the wiki says, Alpha-1 testing was US-East and US-West only. I've just verified this by locating this discord message which I won't screenshot because it's in the Alpha-1 restricted discord "spot testing news" channel. They had 2 servers in US-East and 2 in US-West. I'm unaware of any others during Alpha-1. We don't know what Alpha-2 will be, but I wouldn't rely on there being more. I'd personally bet Beta is when the servers go global, but anything's possible, I suppose. There will be more players with access to Alpha-2 than Alpha-1, so there might be ...

Caravan system does not work well with crafting

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-29 21:43:51

I sortof expect Caravans to be moreso shared operations, used for either higher security than a mule (pool funds to hire a bunch of defenders) or for traders doing larger-scale arbitrage style operations. I would like to like your suggestion, but I"m very concerned about the large currency 'source' that would be involved in making it viable. I don't see "node requests" being player-originated for certificates, for the obvious reason that they're not valuable to players except artificially (the gold source problem again), but can sorta see how a node might occasionally put out requests for resources that would ...

If Intrepid created a book about AoC Ancient History , Lore or Ages of AoC, would you buy it?

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-29 21:55:14

Probably not before release. I have to see that the game works out as promised, that it ends up having a style that I enjoy (it's not guaranteed to end up being 'for me', after all, regardless of how I feel about it at this early stage). If it's on the level of certain other games I play, yeah, I'd consider it.

Non-Combatant attacking Corrupted

You have to hold a specific key, or hit a toggle, to be able to hit another player, so there's no accidents on that front. As for "tapping a green to see if they'll fight"... (ref: Nameplate > Health ) You'll at least know whether they're full or sorta low. You just won't know the exact details of "how low".

Non-Combatant attacking Corrupted

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-29 22:26:42

Yeah, people might have to, god forbid, engage in communication . "Hey, anybody wanna duel?" "Oh, you're back. Wanna just fight for the spot, rather than one of us having to deal with being red?" This does limit the element of surprise, but that's kindof beneficial to both parties. If I'm down 30% health at the start of the fight, I'm much more likely to go "fuck it, I cant win now anyway, so I'll just stay green", and then nobody gets a proper fight we'd both otherwise enjoy. (For this reason, I believe that Rogues sneak attack setups ...

Caravan system does not work well with crafting

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-29 22:39:12

In regard to the "node requests sponsored by players", either we are spending their tax money without them getting anything out of it, or Mayors need a reason to ask for Caravan scale deliveries of materials, which brings us... perhaps half-way back to Azherae's point. Someone needs to WANT 9900 iron, even as a node effort. I don't doubt that's possible, but you then get into the fact that that whole multi-player effort wherein a node's players will somehow USE that 9900 iron they requested (presumably to build up the node) only managed to spawn a single caravan. I ...

What Do We Want as Maximum Character Power Scaling?

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-30 03:17:05

Here's a prior thread discussing similar concepts, with a more concrete scale that covered the subject rather well. I'm in the "Final Fantasy XI" camp. I want at-level overworld monsters to be individually interesting, and bosses/raids to require proper group skill and coordination.

Caravan system does not work well with crafting

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-30 03:32:24

I took a step too far. I was too enamored by the idea of a node working together to place a bulk order of materials to be crafted and used through a cohesive community effort, to produce the actual requirements for a node upgrade, that I didn't consider the less interesting, more practical option of the node's "upgrade mechanic" just directly consuming the bulk quantity of iron. I see no issues with your suggestion. It will probably do what's intended. If you want multiple caravans required, I start to wonder how the supply side of this will keep up, ...

Caravan Camping

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-30 03:55:12

It feels unrealistic to me. I absolutely don't mind if some sort of "roaming mobile home" system is added, with all the various risks you might expect, but for Caravans themselves to be equipped as something that would ever want to do anything other than 'proceed as smoothly as possible directly to their destination' is somewhat against their purpose and economic nature, and just isn't a very realistic thing that an entity preparing a caravan would plan seriously for. That said, what would you want to see in your temporary camp, as features?

Regarding the asthetic variation of Nodes.

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-30 13:11:16

Yes. Pure first past the post. (ref: Racial influence on nodes ) Statistically, there will be variation in the density of individual races within even a uniform population across the world. There will probably even be a couple player efforts to get less represented races to all focus on a single server to boost its chances. It's reasonable to assume that some aesthetics will not be seen on a given server, but far less reasonable to assume they will not be seen on any server. Similarly, it's guaranteed that you will not see a metropolis from all races on ...

Weekly Sermons in a Religios Node

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-30 13:22:06

And yet, I feel like any NPC involved would get stale quickly. You'd have to have someone at Intrepid write a whole sermon for various different philosophies every week. It's a nice idea in theory, but it seems like it wouldn't hold up in practice. If you want to give a religious-type buff, why not just have some form of "praying at the cathedral once a day/week" instead?

Pirate city and 0 taxes

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-30 13:30:32

I believe the point is moreso that pirates wouldn't "donate" very often at all, particularly once any form of resentment or factionalism got seeded by one person not doing their share (one of many reasons why taxes are taxes irl), not that it would be somehow abused. The money has to have some meaningful use, or there would be no point to taxes in the first place, right? I've seen suggestions recently to allow a mayor to use tax money to "commission" Caravans by placing bulk requests for resources used in node upgrades. Presumably this would pay out from ...

Corruption system in relation to auto-flagging in open sea

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-30 13:36:51

lol, my man, there are islands to go to! (And hopefully a bunch of smaller ones too, not just those big few we see on the map.) I don't know what's out there but I intend(ed?) to find out. I can't just not be taking pictures of the sights from all of the good perches I might find out there. Aquatic mounts might work for this, as you say. Might not. I guess we'll see what type of player base this new policy attracts; something far more important than the mechanical effects of the policy itself on the player ...

What Items do you want to Craft?

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-30 13:44:38

Furniture. Tables, chairs, desks, beds. And boxes . Can't craft boxes (out of wood) in another game I play. Very disappointing. I'd also find it nice to be able to contribute to crafting buildings and structures, in some form beyond "donate 100 wood planks". I'm not sure exactly what form this would take, though.

DPS Meter Megathread

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-30 14:39:21

DPS meters are useless. I need to know whether my buffs are working, not whether my "damage rotations are perfect". Any pure "DPS meter" is useless, and no-one should bother making it. That's the "compromise" I'd offer the "toxicity" crowd. Don't include a DPS stat. This is what trackers are for: This isn't cheating. This doesn't tell me any of the boss's secrets. (Unless you really thought I wouldn't notice the boss had a knockback ability.) This is about my own performance. It's not about damage, it's about "did I even notice I failed to do my own basic ...

Non-Combatant attacking Corrupted

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-30 16:42:38

I was surprised when I first read this thread, because this is what I thought the system WAS: Anyone who attacks anyone goes Purple, even if they're attacking a Red. This system works. It's less punishing than some others, but I didn't see enough of a flaw to consider it invalid. From what I understood, corruption isn't supposed to stop ganking, or even make gankers lives miserable, only to stop ganking sprees . If a guy went red and killed someone (for a grudge, money, whatever), they'd go grind it off. To all the greens in the area, the ...

Should a city be able to ban/allow pirate ships from docking?

Post by SongRune on 2022-08-30 18:27:31

There is however one, simple, inescapable fact. It dropped certificates. Not materials. If they wanted weight, they'd give you materials. You drop certificates on death, so it's not to protect from that. It can have only one purpose: To make it so that looting a caravan isn't entirely useless because a person can't carry more than a tiny fraction of the loot away after. Caravans exist to carry far more than a player can. Certs are the way that players can loot a caravan at all. Having to take them back to the node of origin only reinforces this ...
