The Implications of the Removal of Crossbows/Potion Launchers

And I'm pretty much watching the owpvp system disappear in front of my eyes with almost every new dev stream. And I will most likely not play the game on release if it is "gone". But that's a whole system, while weapons are just a fraction of their whole system. I'm just trying not to draw a line from a point, because I hate when people do that. While twitter is obviously a hellhole, I do think that it represents the worst possible extrapolations that people like to do. And twitter is damn full with people seeing one thing ...

The Implications of the Removal of Crossbows/Potion Launchers

I've only played a game that required particular weapons to use class abilities (so pretty much what Ashes is gonna be), so I got a question. Are there mmos (or even rpgs) where rogues don't use daggers and instead use smth else? I don't think I've even heard of them using short swords or anything like that, but maybe I just missed the game that did that.

It's just that to me a "Rogue" always means someone who's gonna kill you from the shadows with a super short pointy stick, mainly because anything longer just doesn't work in close quarters. And I can't come up with a weapon that could replace daggers w/o changing the rogues role. Rapier is kinda close and L2 had its rapier-wearing class be as close to a rogue as possible, but it still gave off a light fighter feel rather than a rogue one. And my point here is that archers aren't the only ones that are limited in their RP ...

But that applies to everyone, so that's beside the point. Some form of gameplay difficulty won't affect everyone, because some people will still breeze through it, while others won't even be able to touch it. That's what I meant. And the harder you make your game - the more people won't be able to play it.

If there are streamer servers - streamers should get direct passes through the queue. I definitely don't want servers that can't be streamed, but I also got no clue how would you even enforce that only on particular servers. Do you ban anyone who streams that server? Cause imo that's very silly. As for how I feel about streamer communities as a whole. I see them as just big guilds, except waaaay less coordinated and way lower in skill. The main problem with those communities is obviously their mass exodus once the streamers leave, but there's gonna be an ...

It's not the same. And I definitely don't want to overload my mind with info about 2 huuuuge mmos rn. I'll play TL if it's available in my region, but considering how much they took from L2, I'd imagine that it won't be that much learning. But outside of that I want to just keep Ashes on my mind for now.

From what I've heard from casuals, it's not about ease or difficulty of content. It's about how fun doing that content is. Yes, some people will derive fun from purely the difficulty of the content, but majority couldn't care less about that. As was shown by WoW's popularity or by FF14's, or by Genshin's. The game just has to be fun.

This sounds like the slipperiest of slopes out there. I want to limit the sniffing of my PC by Intrepid as much as possible. Pretty much to only bot-related programs, though even that should ideally be somehow done through in-game action tracking rather than looking at what apps I have on my PC. Also, you'd have to constantly check if those streaming programs are running. Also, what about double PC setups, where your gaming PC doesn't have anything stream-related on it. And pretty much every big streamer runs a 2-PC setup, so you wouldn't even prevent the thing you ...

I guess I'm not getting my point across well enough. You can't have this unless Intrepid literally ban streamers from being on those servers or they constantly check your PC for streaming apps (but as I pointed out, that wouldn't even work in the cases that you care about). And that is why I find this part of your questions silly. Having several "streamer servers" and giving streamers free pass through the queue would accomplish way more than banning people from streaming other servers. Redirect instead of turn away. A small 1-2k streamer would have way less impact on ...

Rogue class concept (how to make it playable in group activities?)

And I think this is the main point that people seem to forget about. Ashes will have a ton of dungeons that have top lvl/quality content and sieges will happen in castle structures with chokeholds. All of that means close quarters, so archers and mages (who I'd assume would be thin-bodied) would be in danger of being way too close to the enemy rogues who can do massive burst dmg.

Yep. L2's 3 top lvl locations of FoG, LoA and IT were the source of most top lvl pvp, with overspill into weaker locations. Ashes will have twice the amount of people and we don't know how many top lvl locations it'll have. I'd assume it's gonna be at least 5, which would distribute the farming population quite nicely and would probably be on the L2's lvls of packed. Maybe even more than that if the pve ends up being on the easier side.

I consider those the weaker spots, cause in my experience and in the majority of pvp vids I've seen from the official servers of that time, only the 3 spots I mentioned were the hottest ones.

Ask any anti-pvp person on this forum (or anywhere else) and they'll tell you that having pvp in their pve is the same as, in the words of a great thinker of our times , "a dick in their salad". This is where the hardcoreness and pvp-centrism comes from. I might love that, you might love that, but the majority of people are either used to the WoW's idea of "pvp", where you just slaughter the enemy w/o any repercussions, or they hate pvp outright. And so we instead get the guilds that are not only fine with that ...

Will they though? Do you really think that a genre that's been rolling down a mountain of "pvp is bad, mkay" for over a decade now will suddenly start rolling back up just because an indie dev company releases a semi-interesting game (that is if it releases and if it's interesting)? NW was supposed to have owpvp - we all know how that ended. TL is the biggest and strongest contender for L2's legacy - it'll have timed owpvp within predetermined limited locations. Riot is allegedly promising to have pvp in it, but I'd put the chances of it ...

Let's talk About Crossbows and Potion Throwers

Then your standards differ from ours and from Intrepid's. They do want gameplay difference between weapons, instead of just having different skins for the exact same gameplay. I'd rather have 2 bows that play differently on release, with potential for way more weapons down the line, than having a single bow with 10 skins but only one style of gameplay.

Because that would confuse way too many people? You have a short bow that looks and plays like a short bow. You have a long bow that does the same. And then you have a crossbow that plays like something else? It's better to have a cohesive presentation across all facets of the game. A thing should work like it looks, if you want people to think that it does.

Which is my point. The streamer viewing masses won't have a proper impact on economy or the game overall because they'll be dead most of the time or just concentrated in one place. And a group of people concentrated in one location is no different from a guild. This is why I don't see streamers as that big of a problem. The only real problem related to them is the exodus of players and the impact of THAT on the game. But this will happen even w/o streamers so once again they're irrelevant.

I'm not sure I fully understood this. Are you suggesting banning streamer people if they're playing on a streaming-restricted server? Cause I'd imagine that parsing their character's name from their stream and then matching it to all the active characters on those servers would be a bit more difficult than just looking at who's streaming on twitch. Also, if this was a known application of this ban, people would just cover up any potential visual of their name. Which would then probably lead to some people trying to find them in the game and then report them to Intrepid, ...

If they counterbalance all those changes with reasonable corruption gain values - I'll be all for it. And if they restrict randos from picking up PKer's loot and only allow the PK killer to do that (and tie that into the BH system) - I'll be the first one to praise that kind of design.

Rogue class concept (how to make it playable in group activities?)

Post by Ludullu on 2023-03-02 18:52:16

Corridors lead and open up to rooms, so rogues can just wait behind a corner in stealth and then ambush the incoming parties by targeting specific enemies. Also, if just a few aoes can kill a character from full hp, who's also supported by healers and is probably highly defended against magic attacks - Intrepid will have completely failed their balancing design. Also also, if Intrepid succeed at their design goal for party compositions, 20 people would mean 2 (maybe 3) mages. And even if a double mage setup is viable, that'd still be 5 at most (cause the ...

Rogue class concept (how to make it playable in group activities?)

Yep, pretty much. A stealthed rogue "somewhere around" is way scarier than "that one rogue behind our enemy lines that has his gapcloser on cd rn". Our tanks in L2 had agro macros for super dangerous rogues and were always keeping their eye on their healers, because that's where the rogues were expected to appear out of nowhere.

From 3:27 onwards a fight is happening in a "corridor" with walls to stand behind and exists to fall back on. This is a mass pvp (21 parties on just one side) before a world raid boss. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WL7_QX23dtg Rogues could stand near the walls to avoid the majority of the first aoes, pick their targets correctly and then use their gap closers to attack those exact targets to try and kill them asap. This would be my approach to this kind of fight. The video shows a different approach due to a particular alliance-wide protective ability. I expect to ...

Gold cost for Crafters to make items: thoughts?

Post by Ludullu on 2023-03-02 22:23:37

Could you explain the implications of this that make you dislike it? And what if that cost was just an automatization of the "gets consumed on each craft" item? So the station at a node would consume that item automatically and you'd be paying for that, while crafts at a freehold or just the player shop at a node would require that item from the crafter themselves. Item acquisition could come in whatever way and on whatever lvl, from mob drops at lvl1 to some artisan profession at the top lvl of progress. Nodes could have these items as ...

That could lead to all kinds of abuses. A bait corpse with some semi-good loot to entice a random passerby to flag themselves, while some pvp-hungry dudes wait around the corner or behind a tree. This also punishes anyone who'd be willing to stand up to the PKer, because now this player would be a target for anyone around them while the whole purpose of the system is to make the PKer "a mob" so that green players could enact revenge w/o fear.

Gold cost for Crafters to make items: thoughts?

Post by Ludullu on 2023-03-02 22:33:31

I'd imagine node tasks would pay out money as a reward. That money would have to come from taxes and any type of npc transactions within the node (unless Intrepid want to have a neverending stream of money for players). So I think that having money-based automated station refueling/repairs would be fine, if it was in the context of "this money pays for the tasks that the node gives out". And the flow of money itself could be controlled by the world manager and depend on whatever Intrepid sees necessary for their economy.
