NO PVP on the Freehold Please!

Post by Ludullu on 2023-03-21 02:50:48

I dunno how the game looked/sounded before 2020, because that was when I found out about it, but I got interested in it exactly because it came from those roots, so the image definitely didn't change in the last 3 years. The open seas change was probably the biggest step towards PvPfying the game even more, but the details about corruption balancing kinda counteract that.

I guess this is why we've had different outlook on the game's prospects. Balance of corruption gain and clearing values. Also its scaling in relation to your PK count. The stat dampening values and the whole BH system details too. All of those are balancing tools for the owpvp and the pvpness of the game will depend on how all of those end up being designed on release.

While I get your point, Steven is the reason why this game exists and why it has some of the features I want in my mmos. This is pretty much the same situation as when some dumb execs at the top of a big gaming company tell their devs what to make. Except here we have an oldschool gamer with money who prefers a particular sub-genre of games. Obviously other devs and designers will influence the development, but unless Steven really says "fuck it all, I'm selling this piece of shit to some venture capital company and bouncing" - ...

I mean, wasn't this literally the biggest example for devs to not bother with any system like that because it's wasted devtime? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFNxJVTJleE Ultima was the biggest mmo of its time and definitely pushed the genre forward, but this situation definitely taught many devs that players will never play how you want them to.

Greens unable to be CCd

It's about pvp balance. The first attacker has the advantage of first strike, so the defender now has the advantage of a CC counter. And reds can go fuck themselves

War participants will be free to gank whoever they want and at any time, because they're permaflagged against each other. But pure greens that are just minding their business should be safer. Also, if you're just ganking a green - just keep hitting them with your biggest hits and they'll either die on the spot to give you corruption or try to run away, but w/o good healing it'd be difficult to just run away. There's the "mount up and run" option, but we don't know how easy that'll be while under attack or how thick the mount will ...

Guess our opinions on this topic just differ. To me it doesn't matter what people made before, but what they want to make now and what features it takes on. If I hear "we have these L2 features in the game" I think "this game is inspired by L2, so it has its roots in it". So yeah, this was the piece of info I was missing then. I dunno how many western devs L2 had early on, outside of Richard Garriott. Some of them might've shifted specialties or quit completely or are just working on other games and ...

That is one hell of a comment. Gonna go buy some chips and read through it bit by bit. edit: got through it. Good post and I agree with a few points, but got nothing really to say on top of that.

Yeah, a beautiful testimony from a game that had pretty much the same corruption system that you dislike. The only CCs that work against "greens" were ones with an attack attribute on them, which were usually only full stuns, that led to the exact abuse of "stun a dude that's fighting mobs and let the mobs finish him off, so that you don't get corruption". Steven wants to avoid that abuse, which is why CCs don't work on greens.

Unreal 5.2 demo

Pretty much what Azherae said. This is an expansion tool so it should come between release and expansions. Especially considering that there's gonna be waaay more UE updates before that so Intrepid will know which one to upgrade to. If they keep constantly upgrading their engine, we'll never see the game.

We've got no real idea what they wanna do with the story and how they want to present it to us. There's still a possibility that we'll have a very direct progression path through the story. Hell, we already know that majority of instanced dungeons will be about the story and that 1/5 of all dungeons are instanced, so unless there's like 5 dungeons, I'd assume that's gonna be a long damn story.

Well, yeah, my experience is barely any real story and progression that's completely outside of anything that's related to the story. But L2 is pretty much a sandbox when it comes to that. But isn't the whole point of the "themebox" marketing that we'll have more of a story-centered gameplay? Obviously that might be false marketing, but we wouldn't know that until we're way later in testing, if at all.

To me it'd be smth like "there's 20 story dungeons that all go in order and give some item rewards; you can't do the 20th dungeon if you didn't do 19th; 20th dungeon gives you items that help A LOT with the highest lvl of content, so you almost have to do it to progress". Hell, if it were me I'd probably make that smth like a 90% "must do it", with the remaining 10% being left to all the super pro players with OEd gear of the latest tier. In other words, to me "themebox" means that you ...

As long as the updates can make up for the lost time through their new features, I'd be completely fine with Intrepid going for them. But I dunno enough about UE to know that kind of detailed stuff. I just assume that Intrepid's devs do and can tell Steven "if we update now, we'll save several months of dev time later".

Top gear is supposed to be rare and limited in availability because of how nodes will work, so what your server had might not exist on other servers, but there might be a chance that it counters whatever gear they do have. And now you've pretty much paid your way to more power. I'm sure they'll implement transfers sooner or later because I'm more than sure that people will whine and complain about it the whole time, but I do hope they don't implement it.

Options for inter guild PVP

Post by Ludullu on 2023-03-23 22:01:21

There should be open world arenas that treat all players as vagabond pvpers (who still have their passives) and caravan events should do the same. That would cover pretty much all the training you'd need. Well, outside of sieges, but imo those should be done in the moment rather than after a ton of proper training. Proper planning and reactive actions should be valued higher than just pure practice amount.

I think SWG was good about this and L2 was too, so I definitely hope they combine those two and make a good system. Definitely hate trash drops. Especially cause they usually ruin owpvp for spots, because those spots become kinda useless due to "gold" being farmable anywhere you want.

Dead on arrival when...

Post by Ludullu on 2023-03-23 23:40:16

Yeah, to me, the beauty of L2's loot tables came from mobs dropping the same stuff as bosses (except for epic jewelry), but at lower rates. And with the game being centered around a ton of grind, you'd get your crafting mats sooner or later (and super rare full drops, which were just pure dopamine straight into the brain). And bosses would just speed up the process a bit. But later on it all devolved into instanced content with unique drops as well I still blame WoW for its insane success, which made pretty much every damn exec out ...

Freeholds: do you want a PvP settings for your freehold?

I already said my opinion. Option good

Freeholds: do you want a PvP settings for your freehold?

Post by Ludullu on 2023-03-25 04:47:52

What if this option determined the taxes you pay for your freehold? No-pvp option costs more than a ffa pvp one. And service tax could be inverted, so a tavern/crafting stall service would pay lower taxes from no-pvp freeholds and the other way around. This would push people towards different setups of their freeholds, but also increase profits of those who go for a riskier setup. A ffa pvp tavern might attract more people, so while service tax will be higher, the pvp setting would be covered by the overall amount of money you receive. And carebear crafting stall ...

Freeholds: do you want a PvP settings for your freehold?

Post by Ludullu on 2023-03-25 06:22:02

I mean, if the concept of risk/reward doesn't suit them, they wouldn't be playing Ashes in the first place. Also, freeholds will already be expensive for any casual player, so a random player with no time to play would probably not even have a freehold to worry about. Plus there's always the good ol' trick of "this price is the base one, while all the pvp prices are just cheaper". If it works with death penalties, why not here

Freeholds: do you want a PvP settings for your freehold?

Post by Ludullu on 2023-03-25 06:45:00

I mean, we're gonna be paying taxes on our freeholds. So all Intrepid need to do is say "by default you have a no-pvp zone on your freehold and your taxes are X. But you can change the zone to a semi/full-pvp zone and your taxes will be 0.5X". Literally the same as the death penalty stuff.

I mean, I expected literally just seeing the dungeon from outside and listening to Steven gush about how cool its story is and smth like that. Hearing from story devs about their design direction and ways they plan on presenting that story would be great. Obviously seeing it all in detailed action would be amazing, but I'm willing to give that up as long as we get at least a detailed explanation of their plans. p.s. for the love of god could you call him Steven and not Stephen? It's literally in the picture
