I guess it's just my inexperience with gcd games, but I've never had issues as a melee in L2. It might've been due to its dmg/ping tracking, which might not work well with action combat, but still. There was still the "hit the target 10m away from you" moments if you start casting an ability on a moving target that keeps running, but I think Ashes could reduce that distance forgiveness due to its movement (because L2 was fully planted). There was activation distance and a bigger effect distance. If between the activation of an ability and the end ...

Yes

Yeah, this might work, if the only other penalties remains as just gear decay and progression system stuff. I could maybe see a problem of avoiding gold all together by just trading through a mediary, but we don't know enough about the game to say for sure if that's possible. Just so you know, edited pings never ping people. You seem to like adding them post factum, but no one gets pinged with those.

Doesn't gcd do the same thing though? Unless the gcd is half a second and all animations are shorter than that, but if they all are then how would an animation-based system be any different? And if the gcd is longer, I'd assume most animations would be quite shorter than that. And with different animations on different speeds you'd have more variety in combat pace rather than having a baseline of gcd.

I've considered that at first, but then read the suggestion as just "whatever caravan value was - that's the lost cost", no repair costs or anything of the sort. Shoulda mentioned that this probably wouldn't work for PKers, unless we purely calculate the loot costs (median within the node of the killing). And considering that some mats from the caravan will just be deleted on destruction, the attackers would pay out more than they got. Though considering that I'd probably keep to the "BHs can only track high ranking caravan attackers".

They're always appreciated, because I'm not that good at deeper economic consequences, so if your experience and extrapolation of this system based on that experience says this wouldn't work, I'm not gonna really argue, cause I haven't thought deeply enough about this suggestion to even come up with an argument

It would be so much easier to literally not let pvp happen in the freehold. This is exactly why I found this change baffling. There's no logical reason to make it.
Post by Ludullu on 2023-03-16 22:13:46
I mean, to me that just sounds like animation based system but with extra steps. Set the effect as "after the target's next cast their animation/cast speed will be longer" and that's it. It would pretty much do the same thing, unless those debuffs influenced the current gcd as soon as they were cast on the target, but even then, I'd imagine the majority of animations would just be too fast to really notice a half-way-through-the-cast effect. Either way. We've been going in circles for too long now. Neither of us will agree on this, so we'll just have ...

Unless Intrepid literally says "you're allowed 3 kills per day on a freehold, but anything more will be considered harassment" - people will just keep killing. Maybe even use alts to do that. I know you don't believe this will happen, but we've got different gaming experiences. Guess AA was less pvpey than L2 back in the day.
Post by Ludullu on 2023-03-17 02:04:56
If I have enough motivation for it, I'll try checking how it works in L2. I know for sure that atk/cast speed influenced animation speed there, but I don't remember how the animation changed during big buffs/debuffs to those speeds. How many gcd games have the effect at the end of the gcd rather than the start? I'm assuming there's quite a few games that allow you to cancel the animation, but what happens to gcd there? Can you immediately cast another ability or do you have to wait the full gcd? I'm guessing EQ2 must've had all of ...

Yeah, we definitely agree on this. Though there can definitely be group/raid-sized rotations, because you should be working as a single unit and the game should allow you to do that and some content should encourage that kind of lvl of coordination.

I was just about to write that I would only agree with this system if everyone could see the values, because it would directly play into risk/reward. You see a route that has high sunk values? - You wanna be the first one to run that route before the values change. But attacker activity in that region has been high, so maybe they're still there and are just killing everyone, so you might still lose all your shit. And as the attacker you have choice of "do I go for a higher sunk route that would probably have juicier ...

I mean, there's this thing called "variety". Not every single damn move gotta be the same or function in the same way. They just gotta balance the hammer's dmg correctly, because it's a bigger risk to use it. There's this other little thing called "CCs". You limit your opponents movements in any way and then use the hammer. And again, if the dmg is properly balanced, that hammer strike will deal a big chunk of hp, so you set your target up to get hit and smash 'em.

You concentrated on a singular ability, while pretty much the whole showcase was about "look, you move and strike, just as many people wanted".

Yes, I also wish we saw waaaay more. But when the devs say "we've listened to feedback, we've applied feedback and here's how we did and will keep doing that" - I feel like that's enough for now. Now if they go back on that word and the next few physical abilities that we see are fully rooted - yep, we can all complain and say "you lied" and "wtf". p.s. mages had planted abilities too, so it's not just melees that gonna stay in one place and get shat on.

I think it should be an mmo Single player games are not mmos, which is why they can't have the quality on the same lvl, nor should they, because what's fun in a single player game is quite far from what's fun in an mmo. Well, at least imo.

I know they're great online games and especially amazing for the RP crowd. But your OP didn't talk about either of those games. You said you want Ashes to be RDR2 and not like other mmos. If you had written that it should appeal to the RPers more and have a deep world with a ton of mechanics, then I'd probably agree, but I would also say that they're already doing that, but also that quite a lot of mmos are also already doing that. You posted 2 videos. One about a mundane "go and find the thing" quest ...

All of that is expected for me. And it would be quite sad if they weren't in the game.

It doesn't really matter what pvpers consider, because it's about Steven's decisions. If he wanted to attract the crowd that hates pvp - he could've just removed pvp from his initial design. And if they do remove owpvp from the game, they'll alienate quite a big chunk of their current audience an consumers, cause people followed the game for that pvp (at least some did).

Anything outside of fully crafted items will have to be transferred, which brings the risk with it. And any fully crafted item is always safe, so making it in a pvp-free zone wouldn't make a difference. The game should have enough content for boths sides of the spectrum. Pretty much the entirety of the game appeals to the pvp side (as long as corruption is well-balanced), so I think that having literally a small square of peace would be completely fine, if it can draw in more of the other side of the spectrum. Nodes will need XP and ...

RPers will have to RP proper knights who defend their brethren from the scourge of the lands. And if you wanna be able to defend against a strong force (and there'll definitely be at least on dick guild that decides to fuck up RPers) - you gotta plan way ahead and prepare accordingly.
Post by Ludullu on 2023-03-20 19:54:38
Definitely agree that there should be either some kind of insurance or a system that helps you move after your node's destruction.

Crafters will need to import and export different materials, at which point they can be attacked. Mule doesn't drop everything. It drops the same ratio of mats as the owner, so a green mule will lose a standard value, a flagged one will lose 50% of that and a red one 400% (currently). Caravans are the ones that break apart completely, with some portion of good fully sunk so that no one gets them. Currently the nodes do not have pvp off in them. I doubt that stays in the game, but it is what it is rn. Also, ...

Unless they're so damn stupid that they can't see right in front of their faces or think 1.1 steps ahead - yes they're aware. And they've said as much countless times, with one of the biggest Steven quotes being "this game will not be for everyone".
Post by Ludullu on 2023-03-20 20:48:38
Nothing confusing about it. You either can see the future and can predict when a siege will happen or you suffer the potential consequences. But it's not even about the mats, it's about the rebuilding and the purchase of a new home. Newer freeholds will be more expensive, so a system that either cuts that price or just gives you back some money from your previous freehold purchase will help people with the move. The loss of storage stuff is a motivator to go defend your fucking node. If literally nothing is lost, no one will fight for their ...

Yep, I hope we can use stuff directly from storage in crafting and stuff.
