Group Finder And Matchmaking

Post by Ludullu on 2023-04-03 18:12:34

This is the main reason why I'd prefer if Ashes had a time-based party-finder and make it as easy as possible for people that play in the same timeframe to match up together and create their own "statics". From my experience that is basically what happens either way, just after a long time of mixing and matching newcomers until you get the best possible setup. In other words, the game should position itself as a long-time party relationship one, rather than a "pick a rando on the ground and play for an hour together" one.

Will it pay to harvest the harvesters?

Just as L2 was, Ashes seem to be going for the "don't let the enemy farm the rare thing" instead of "kill the enemy to get the rare thing they dropped". The former is about pvping for content control, while the latter is about content removal. I like the first one, which is why I got interested in Ashes in the first place. It's understandable why an EVE/UO player would dislike that approach. But as the saying goes, this game is not for you

All they need to do is to make online active player participation way more valuable than the npc one. Ideally in a different way than "you get more stuff than the npc". The people who don't care about the farming can still utilize the basics of the system, while active farmers can properly benefit from it.

I think I can imagine a few basic ways of how it'd be super bad, so "no" for now. But I'm sure that the discussion will bring some of my ideas sooner or later and either you or someone else will counter them, so I'll just wait for that for now. Also, this being a 2017 thing, there's quite a big chance that something might've changed since then, though I do think they mentioned these npcs back in the character creator update, so it's probably at least still on the table.

Will it pay to harvest the harvesters?

Seas are permaflag, so in theory you'd only get 50% of the potential loot, so I'd say that seas pvp is also not about loot. Caravans and mules are about loot. They are literally concentrated spots of shitton of loot that you're free to pvp or to PK (respectively). It just comes down to how well Intrepid design the caravan/mule usage, cause if no one uses them - there will in fact be no loot pvp.

Is there a way to use this system in a better way or does your group dislike it at its sheer concept? Maybe smth like "control your npcs to prepare the land for your online actions while you're offline"?

Again, if Intrepid design their caravans to be one of the main means of proper transportation of goods - you can just pirate that shit on the seas. Steven's nebulous "seas are like so important and valuable, like omg, they have to be forced flagged" tells me nothing. Does the value come from mobs? Locations? Bosses? Fishing? Literally anything else that would have no impact on pillaging? Yet again, most potential answers to that imply a "prevent that group of people from participating in that content".

I know this was rhetorical, but the answer is probably "for the masses". As Arya says, people won't have time to walk back and forwards each day to just farm their plants, so the game provides an automation for it. I definitely understand the points your group have brought up. I'd hope for a good design in the end, but I ultimately don't care so whichever is the best way for the game is what I'd prefer. And just as with corruption balancing, these kinds of systems influence everyone in the game, but only a fraction of the playerbase ...

Will it pay to harvest the harvesters?

Post by Ludullu on 2023-04-03 19:43:12

We have no context for how sea looting will work, especially for the super rare items. What if they're all huge and require a sea caravan to move? Also, we don't know how exactly looting will even work. What are the chances to drop any given droppable item in your inventory? What about its volume/quantity? What will people do to minimize any chances of dropping the rare stuff? I get what you're saying and there's still a chance that this design changes somehow (just as caravan death penalties decay your gear for some fucking reason), but I would expect ...

That's true. And it goes against the "not everyone wins in Ashes" part of the design, but it's not like this is the first contradiction in the overall design so far. I definitely hope they clarify their current stance on this. Maybe this thread will help with that.

Will it pay to harvest the harvesters?

Post by Ludullu on 2023-04-03 19:54:08

My L2 bias is just waaaay too strong on this topic. The pvp for that content was usually the fun part of the content, which is why my brain got wired to prefer it that way. That "overcome other players to get the thing" is what was attractive to me. And I do realize that the majority of people would prefer a much fairer and more content-directed system rather than a "pvp if you want to even try this content". And as Dygz would probably say, "if Ashes had a lead designer, this might not have been an issue" ...

People have probably figured out that alpha2 is ways off (as was confirmed in the last stream) and they have no reason to stick around on a forum of a non-existent game. And super oldschool players might be running out of unanswered questions or have learned that their super specific/hardball question just won't get answered until waaaay later. All of those things would lead to a decrease in the amount of questions. And obviously interest in the game has gone down since the huge 2020 wave so there'd be just fewer people visiting the forums to even know when ...

There is no second "P", if your target player doesn't even respond to your attacks. It's literally worse than pveing, because there the mobs at least fight back. PKing is the weakest form of player interaction with the game's world. PKing is the ultimate carebear activity, because only carebears would want to fight a target that doesn't fight back

My distrust of NCsoft still makes me think that any potential hype for TL comes purely from the fact that we barely know anything about the game. Maybe I just haven't gone deep enough into my research on that game (even though I followed "Lineage 3/Eternal" for pretty much the last decade), but I feel like I know more about Ashes than I do about TL. And not knowing things lets us come up with all the cool ways that the little info we do have could be used or designed in.

And this is why we have the "flagged people drop 50% less stuff". Fighting back is encouraged, so, at the very least, more people will try it. This is where our experience differ widely enough where I can't agree. I haven't played "resources drop on death" games, so I never saw a reason to chase someone for a long time just to kill them (well, unless they were a PKer who's been terrorizing a location with weaker people). Maybe Ashes will change my outlook on pvp, if it somehow keeps the currently planned design (which I kinda doubt at ...

So you had an actual good reason to chase them in a specialized pvp zone that they entered willingly? I think I should've been more specific. I was talking about the attacks on people minding their business, on randos farming their stuff but instead of taking their spot you just keep chasing them, and other stuff like that. Arya's list shows that the majority of AoC's pvp is based on goals and meaningful requirements to begin the encounter. But to Arya this list implies that the game is not a pvp one, which in turn implies to me that ...

Yeah, I guess pretty much all info about Ashes is just promises of what's potentially to come and any extrapolations from those promises, while TL's info is more concrete even if there's seemingly way less of it. Though I found it kinda funny that TL sent out an email to the amazon workers about the internal "alpha testing", while the game is supposed to come out in 2023 (iirc even the first half). And we have Ashes with more than a year before alpha2 and years more before release. As much as I consider Steven's constant reiterations of "this ...

Yeah, I also hope this is a start of a trend cause it was highly appreciated. Maybe this was an indicator that they're far along the development of this particular system that they thought it'd be fine to reveal more details? That would be a good sign too, even if alpha2 is more than a year's time away.

I don't quite see how "anywhere" works here. Because you'll still need to run for an hour if you find a group to some content on the other side of the world and the party whose place you took would have to wait for you for that hour. And if you're trying to find a group within your own node or within your current node - you're literally in the same local chat and can just talk to those people. Group finder is useful when the content can be reached within a very short time, which will not be ...

I guess it's more about my own bias. Not only of constant/static parties, but also guilds. With L2 being all about guilds, you'd pretty much always be in one and any party that lost a player to sudden circumstances or who was just late - you'd always pick them up from the guild chat. And with Ashes trying to concentrate on Node comradery (and still having guilds on top of that) I expect the game to have tightknit communities that work kinda like guilds, and the node chat would serve the same function as my guild chat did for ...

This is why I want the boards to be for "future content". I'm probably being a bit too idealistic and definitely quite naïve, but I feel like pushing people (even if just a bit) into groups would benefit the game way more than having a super easy pick-up environment. Help people make foe-statics as easily as possible, in hopes that they turn into real statics that then have potential to turn into guilds. And I'm probably wrong, but I just feel that, just as you said, people would always go for the path of least resistance and keep going ...
