What can we learn from the phenomenon of Classic WoW Hardcore?

Post by Ludullu on 2023-04-06 15:31:18

So a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of the overall playerbase managed to enjoy a game mode and you now think that this is the answer to any dev problems? Are there any concrete numbers on how many people tried the mode and bounced off? Are there any numbers at all really?

Number of Questions Asked in the Livestream Forum Post by Month

Same. I have friends who're even ready to pay for alpha2 access, but they got no interest in the forum. And everyone else is just waiting when/if the game comes out.

I don't care what a few streamers do on their stream. I care about info that could even remotely support your claims. 440k downloads doesn't tell me anything about how many people might've stopped playing after their first death to a random mob or fall dmg. Here's another google page. Only a fraction of the playerbase is interested in wow classic. Out of that fraction only a fraction is interested in hardcore (a real fucking small one by the looks of it). Out of that fraction only an even smaller fraction is interested enough to try it (that's the ...

What can we learn from the phenomenon of Classic WoW Hardcore?

So grinding the same lowbie locations with the exact same mobs and quests over and over and over again is not boring? Ashes is already doing this. They've already said they want the game to be fun from the very start. And they want pve to be non-trivial too. You're arguing for a self-imposed rule of "if I die I fail completely". It can be applied to any game at any time and it'll add difficulty and stress to that game, because you'd have to pay way more attention at all times instead of just having fun and enjoying ...

What can we learn from the phenomenon of Classic WoW Hardcore?

Post by Ludullu on 2023-04-06 17:06:31

Nope, don't see it at all. The game didn't change in any way. Some people just decided to play it in a different way. You can do that at any time with any game and it has nothing to do with what devs wanted you to do. If anything it just shows that WoW might've been a bit more difficult than people thought. But I do not see how this is in any way related to AoC or their plans. And as Azherae said, what you're describing only relates to the smallest portion of the overall playerbase. The same ...

Post by Ludullu on 2023-04-06 18:27:58

I've already said how it relates to AoC. That is "AOC WILL ALREADY HAVE THIS". So just as I've said before, and others have said already - there's nothing to learn from wow hardcore for Ashes. The game will be for those who like it. It won't be super casuals and it won't be super PKers, because both of those extremes don't fit with what Ashes is going for. And those are mostly the "not everybody" that Steven keeps mentioning. There's obviously more groups that won't jell well with Ashes, but we'll know about those only when we learn ...

Yes I did. I even fucking doubted myself, but still forgot the correct one. Damn english language for its countless words that all sound the same, but are written in ten different ways and mean 20 different things. Though I don't even know how I got "vale" considering I've never even used that form of "valley". Guess my brain still hasn't recovered after a week of being sick

Throne and Liberty systems similar to AoC & Their twist on them

Post by Ludullu on 2023-04-07 13:25:04

Well, if this leak is true then those reqs are quite nice and I'll even be able to launch the game. And TL is supposedly still on UE4, so in theory UE5 should be optimized even better, so there's hope that my ancient 1080 will survive AoC too

A few thoughts on game mechanics

Post by Ludullu on 2023-04-07 21:42:16

I kinda already expect the first one. Same with the second one (cause L2's sieges had mechanics that changed respawn availability throughout the siege). And I expect pvping to get turned off in the node centers, cause waaay too many people will complain about that for it to not change. Would definitely love me some open world arenas, just as L2 had them. Even better if people could use their freehold to provide this as a service to other people, in a form of a training location.

Will AoC incorporate Time Dilation, or TiDi to deal with mass pvp or congregation?

Post by Ludullu on 2023-04-08 00:00:44

I'm finding it quite hard to imagine how exactly would this work in a hybrid-combat game. Metro sieges will most likely see the biggest amounts of people concentrated in roughly the same place, which will be a combat event, so it's not like Intrepid could just design the system around people simply existing rather than heavily acting. This system works in EVE because its combat (and overall movement) is kinda turn-based, so you can just make those turns reaaaally long. I don't think that applies to normal mmos though. I'd hope/assume that in the last ~20 years we've gotten ...

Corruption: Does it / Should it Diminish While Logged Out?

Post by Ludullu on 2023-04-08 00:48:50

Definitely against this. If you remove any and all amounts of corruption after some set amount of time - you're helping PKers with alts clean their alts w/o losing anything. If you're setting some veeeery slow decay rate - it's meaningless for the absolute majority of people, and that guy that left the game for months would've returned to a literally whole different game (different nodes, different content, different guilds, different gear progression), so dying a few times to remove his corruption would be the least of his problems. And if you want to have a quicker timer on ...

Manually Collapsing Underealm Openings?

Post by Ludullu on 2023-04-08 00:53:37

I could maybe see this working, but only if it requires a truly huge scale operation by a ton of people, with maybe even the closest node involved. Otherwise this could be abused to all hell, and not even in relation to caravans. Maybe if it was a "this hole closed, but now this one opened up instead" kind of deal and caravanners would need to change their route on the fly - then yeah, this might be interesting and would put more variety into caravans. Though this reeks of even more attacker benefits, which would probably result in ...

And your post illustrates exactly why people here have said that there's nothing to learn from wow hardcore for Ashes. Intrepid is already planning to do the exact thing your wife liked. They will already have a game that's "just like in the old days". That's been the whole plan from the very start. Arya could've just said "Intrepid wants to do a good thing. I want them to do that good thing" in the OP and people would've agreed way more than with this post.

Throne and Liberty systems similar to AoC & Their twist on them

Post by Ludullu on 2023-04-08 20:20:23

Ah, almost the same as it worked in L2. L2 let you wear the gear, but put a penalty on you. Oh how many times I've deleveled myself below my newly bought gear, that quite often I bought BY SELLING MY OLDER ONE And then I had to fight super easy mobs just to level back up to my gear. Yeah, I don't think I've heard of any other mmo where you pretty much HAD to have a resource if you wanted to play the game in a normal way (obviously not counting arrows). While I appreciate the interconnectedness ...

Throne and Liberty systems similar to AoC & Their twist on them

Post by Ludullu on 2023-04-08 23:06:41

Just as a small clarification, this was only true for magic shots, so fighter chars would either suffer w/o any or just spend money. It was a semi-quasi-notreally-balance against the mana consumption of mages, because as I said before magic classes could only do damage by using abilities so they'd always spend mana, while fighters could just auto-attack for good dmg. And mana regen consisted of sitting on your ass, so even though mages had higher dps per mob (especially if they had any kind of SS), the overall farming time would be somewhat similar (super aoe farm notwithstanding) ...

Throne and Liberty systems similar to AoC & Their twist on them

Post by Ludullu on 2023-04-08 23:28:33

Add EQ2's pace of content release and we'll have a more than perfect mmo L2 mainly relied on 10s cd 15s effect hp regen pots, with 6min cd big hp and mp pots, super rare no cd direct heal hp pots and a whole separate "health" bar with no cd low/mid pots for it. If I saw correctly in the TL videos, it does seem to just have direct healing pots. Maybe that was just the ones they had in their testing or maybe these ones fit their combat design better, I dunno. L2 added the second hp bar ...

Damn, guess that info just never got to my info circles. Yeah, that's real shitty if they sold SS right from the start. That kinda destroys the whole point of the crafting system (well, not the whole, but stil). Then I definitely hope they don't appear in TL.

This is kinda what scares me about the majority of korean mmos rn. They're so damn high up on greed from all their mobile mmos that I really don't see how they could care about great combat or super deep design or whatever else. And the fact that we'll be able to play TL on our phones, and that there'll be at least some form of auto-battling, just makes me think that combat will really not be all that engaging. I hope I'm wrong, but money talks and HOLY FUCK did mobile L2 (several of them jfc) make them ...

Throne and Liberty systems similar to AoC & Their twist on them

Post by Ludullu on 2023-04-09 00:15:39

Oh, so it's waaay worse than I thought So yeah, this is kinda why L2 added the second bar. Strong mages started nuking a bit too hard, but the game still had to get more gear so they'd start hitting even stronger, so they added more "pvp hp" to the game. BDO just resolved the issue in the most BDO way possible. I'm mainly worried about the "bottiness" of the game's design. Auto-farming implies all kinds of design decisions, even if you can only fight weaker mobs. At some point people will outgear good mobs strongly enough to auto-farm ...

Yeah, that line has a CRITICAL lack of punctuation. I think this is roughly correct? And I think he means that we won't see out mates' numbers, because Intrepid don't want meters. And even if we did see all those numbers, meters wouldn't be required because... well, we see all the numbers. And if I'm right in that assumption, I think your reply applies.
