What is your MMO PvE experience like?

Depending on how difficult the dodge mechanics are for most bosses/mobs, this could still be an exploitable problem of "take a break and heal up, while running around a bit instead of hitting the mob". Though I'm sure all of that can be figured out in testing. This kind of mechanic does bring more fun into the pvp part of the pvx equation, where proper awareness and movement could allow the OG farmers to use the boss' attack against the newcomers. Would definitely love this if it's gonna be the case in Ashes.

The best guild leaders I've known were usually kinda shit at pvp. But they were great at looking at the bigger picture and explaining it to people who couldn't see that picture, but might've been way better at pvp.

As much as I agree with this sentiment and will be doing just this in the game, I know for sure that the majority of people won't be doing this. Especially not for random people on the server. You might pass down your old gear to a trusted guild member, but distributing a ton of gear to a ton of people is something only the very generous and "those who RP a good guy" people would do - and those are a rarity. A system like the one I suggested would just add motivation to sharing your stuff with ...

The only WoW I've played is ~20h of tbc classic, yet I'm here hating on transmogs and asking for a direct sight-reading of enemies power lvls (at least rough estimates). You know why? Because I've played L2 for 12 years and sight-read all my enemies and knew when to engage them or when to run, or when to prepare for a specific kind of fight. If you consider L2's owpvp casual, I dunno what to tell you.

You usually wouldn't have pvp during the fight itself iirc. The door to the boss would close so the pvp would be before the farm. As I said multiple times before, epic bosses (not all) in L2 had semi-instances. The fight itself would usually be just against the boss. The pvp would be before the boss and sometimes after. Or, if you failed your farm attempt, there'd be pvp while waiting for the door to reset and open up again. Valakas' hp pool was just so damn huge that you needed that many people to overpower him. And this ...

I think this is the core of the issue. Any PvE is centered purely around what Devs dictate to you is the "right way to do things", while any owPvP is centered around what Players dictate is the "right thing". You main argument stems from the premise of "Devs told me that I can only bring 40 people into this instance, so I gotta work with those 40 people to beat the instance", while owPvP players who want to be seen as "the best pvpers" think along the lines of "what is the smallest amount of players I can ...

You'll have to pay taxes on your housing and will most likely be required to help out with node tasks (depending on how other players can influence your living situation within a node), and some people might not like that while also not caring about having a freehold or a stall. I'd assume some players will go w/o a citizenship just because they're trying to save up some money for something or just want to be a roaming traveler.

Ya know what solves the "BiS is fucking uggly" problem? Designing your game's BiS gear to not look ugly. But I know that it's pointless to argue for this point cause people are way too damn deep into their dressup fantasies, and I am happy that it allows the game to not be p2w, so I'll just learn to ignore everyone's cosmetics and only look at the stat buff icon.

Btw, that brings up a good discussion point. Where would a non-citizen store their stuff? At a node bank, right? But w/o a citizenship at that node, would that player be able to join the potential siege and then just take their stuff back? Have we heard info on this topic? edit: warehouses appear in lvl1 nodes, so that'll be a huuuge benefit to non-citizens. Just store your shit at a lvl1 node that will never get sieged and you're golden. And if you see the node grow, just move your stuff w/o any problems.

I mean, from the RP standpoint, yeah for sure. But from a practical standpoint, if I'm a non-citizen and I have a shitton of gear/resources that I've farmed on my travels I'd rather keep them in at least some bank. And preferably a bank that won't be destroyed by other players when I might not be playing the game. Hell, I might do this even when I am a citizen of some node, if I can do that. Especially if I can place a freehold as close to another lvl1-2 node as possible. Easy caravan runs between the two ...

Oh, I hope there's a ton of random casual players with 0 gear/resources to lose who are just enjoying the game. I'll be glad to help them whenever they need any help. But I somehow think there won't be thousands upon thousands of such people in a pvx game. What definitely will be present is a ton of competitive players who'll use any and every exploit-like mechanic in the game for their benefit. I can use a node bank w/o losing anything within it EVER and don't really have any issues transferring that stuff when I need to (cause ...

And the game already allows you to do so. You can sit in one location cutting down trees for a year and then sell those trees, buy some gear, level up and go enjoy some raiding with other people. What it doesn't give you is boosts for being alone, exactly because Intrepid wants to bring social gameplay back to mmos. You can still take your time getting to a point where a group is needed, but grouping up will still be required for high lvl content, and, if I understood derp correctly, he's fine with that.

It's mainly a response to Noaani's explanation of what "top lvl pve" for him is and his reasoning for why owpvp is always easier. "You're limited by the devs in pve, while you can always add people in owpvp". And my counter to that is "your upper limit in pve is dev-based, while my upper limit in owpvp is me-based". I'm sure you can beat 40-man raids with fewer people, but I'd assume Noaani would just says that it wasn't top lvl pve if you could. If I'm wrong on that assumption @Noaani pls correct me.

Yes, the Thieves Guild was just given as an example to prove a point, it wasn't meant to be taken literally, as you often do. And person who likes to RP could rp as a thief. The game could provide them with a "Thief" title and the RP player might be satisfied with just that, because they create their own gameplay on top of the tools the game provides. Or, well, at least that's what I've heard about how people RP in mmos. If your RPing is different, pls do explain the difference. But Ashes doesn't just give you ...

I won't speak for other L2 players on the forum, but for me the "one epic boss per update" (roughly every 6 months) was more than enough. Outside of that boss there'd be several open world bosses and farming locations, but nothing anywhere near the complexity or difficulty of an epic boss, which in turn were nowhere near top lvl pve from raiding games. When you have the time, you can check out this archive of the official L2 site. In the "news -> game updates" tab you can see all the things that devs wanted to advertise to ...

Here's a question that will give me the absolute answer for this situation: Have you ever tried to or heard of <40-man raid groups clearing top lvl 40-man raid instances in EQ(2)? Same question to you, Azherae, have you tried/heard of people beating those Beastmen instances with <6 people? The answers to my question will provide me with explanation. Or will at least let me make a parallel for the mentality of both groups.

I thought the example of "go RP as a thief" in the context of "social structures" (yes, should've used Orgs instead of Structures) was obvious enough. Guess it wasn't, so I should've explained it better. My bad. The example itself served as a functional parallel. And I've already addressed this. Most people won't just share their gear with random people out of the pureness of their hearts. But if they have a benefit/motivation for doing so - they will. The parallel with the Thieves Guild was to say that most people don't RP as members of said guild, but ...

That's what I'm counting on. Make a reputation for myself and the guild of "all newbies/casuals welcome w/o any requirements". Help people out with whatever they want and just provide them with a story from the game. I've had several guilds that were the main reason I'd play on a server and would then be the main memory from that server. The comradery and just cozy vibes would enrich the game's experience. I hope to provide the same to others, to pay it forward in a way. And if I ever decide to go hardcore for a while, I ...

I agree with everything else, but am not completely sure about this point. In the context of "BiS won't come from instances" - yes, a pvp-centered player will be a part of that kind of raid and will reap rewards from it sooner or later. But with instanced content, I don't see why a guild would distribute loot from it to their pvp parties, when there's open world content that, in theory, should be providing gear of equal strength. But if you meant it in the way of "you'll have the same tier of gear w/o even participating in ...

Protecting Our Casuals: Gear

Post by Ludullu on 2022-06-20 04:51:09

This is kind of my point. Yes, the "difficulty" in owpvp does usually come down to numbers, but any self-respecting pvper always tries to go for the lowest possible number on their side against the highest possible number on the enemy's side. A type of 300 Spartans approach to owpvp. And what I was trying to get at by asking my question is whether pvers have a similar/same kind of mentality when it comes to pve. Noaani has said that he's beaten all EQ2 content at the time of him playing the game. That would mean that he overcame ...

So yeah, this whole post was the direct example of "granular and detailed pve design", where Devs planned exactly what their players would have to do in order to overcome the raid barrier. To me personally, "just adding more people" is the same limiter as this design was for you, except the direction of member amount is opposite. You couldn't decrease that number because the devs told you so, while I couldn't increase that number because I limited myself. Of course you can dismiss that kind of approach as "fake difficulty" or "unreasonable attitude", but that's just where we'll ...

Our hope here is completely the same. How cheap do you think low-mid tier will become several months after release, considering that Intrepid plans to incorporate deconstruction and gear decay into the game? I'd assume there'll be at least some price growth just because everyone will have more money later on (unless the gold sinks are really finely tuned to stop that), and the price of that gear would grow too because, in theory, it wouldn't be too abundant. So how exactly would a newbie easily afford some new gear to try and catch up to other players? Especially ...

I try to apply the same thinking to my own suggestions, but I either miss some stuff or come up with solutions later on and forget to write them down or just decide not to cause barely anyone should care about what some rando on the internet has come up with. And I'm ready to complain and argue, in order to stand up against the rising tide of unneeded or unreasonable changes to Intrepid's core designs. In my experience maybe ~10-20% of people can be 100% polite in rivalries or wars. You can freely speak to them off of the battlefield, you can usually even befriend them and become guildies if their/your guild falls apart. I have several old friends that I got in this way. But outside of those 10-20 it's a barren toxic land of "I took yo mama to the movies yesterday and left here there alone in the middle of the movie!"-type stuff. The super toxics
