Again, this sub-discussion was about TA and not just "whoever's interested". This research from 2004 supposes an average age of ~26 for mmo players. Even if we assume that several million young teens got hooked onto WoW, they'll be at least 30 by the time Ashes comes out. And the chances are, a ton of them will be closer to or over 40. And there's even higher chances that the ones the most interested in Ashes would be over 40, because they would've had to be later in their teens to love pre-mid WoW mmos. And I don't think ...

Yeah, that's quite likely. Maybe going for hybrid is for that exact reason. They saw that a ton of tab games added action abilities to appeal to newer audiences and decided to build their own system in such a way that it's way easier to add those kinds of things in the future. Starting the game by targeting the people who will definitely throw some money at it (older folk) and then appealing to younger players to save the game from falling off a cliff definitely seems like the best way to go.

This link literally says that average gamer is 35-44. And that millenials are the biggest PC users (and older gens are most likely PC users too). By the time Ashes comes out, those millenials will probably be almost 30 (the youngest ones, mind you). And within those PC users, there's a high chance that only some part is even interested in mmos, let alone older ones. But I see that it's utterly pointless trying to discuss this, so I'll just leave. We'll see how many young people will be at all interested in Ashes when it comes out.

Pretty much this. I find it super dumb that you are even able to queue into a party "event' as a solo player. I could understand this kind of matchups in mobas/shooters, because there's no way to find friends in the game to play with, but this is an mmo. You're supposed to find other people to clear content with, so if you want to participate in party content - go find a party.

At this point I feel like it's coming down to the level of raiding standards for different people. Noaani and Azherae are trying to say that not utilizing literally all of the combat's mechanics during the top lvl content is asinine and that, in order to have a raiding scene, you need to have several top level raids with enough variety for all of them to be interesting to said scene. And all the others seems to just be saying "well, you can just forget about some mechanics during the raid and it'll be just fine" or "you could ...

I think targeted aoes that require a debuff from another class (ideally a targeted ranged action ability) and that do aoe dmg based on how much dmg you did to the target would be great to bring "balance" of skill lvls for both sides. Let's say you have a thin squishy rogue running together with a fairly big group of his allies towards some place during a siege. Their enemies see the rogue and know that he's squishy, so they target him with an action ability to put a debuff on him and then try to blow him up ...

I'm no designer or a dev, but I'd bet money that they have literally nothing to do with the stagnation. But some dumb execs (just like the ones that Azherae mentioned) most definitely do.

I expect that to be expected of me. That's the whole point of hybrid combat. If I can disregard action completely during top lvl content (both pve and pvp) - that ain't a fucking hybrid. But again, this is purely in context of top lvl content. Anything else is free to sway to whichever side and to whatever degree.

Any random environment hazards that come from your perspective's back, while you're attacking a specific part of the boss. In tab your camera is usually waay further away from your character, so you see more of the environment, so if there's a horizontal attack coming towards you from behind - you'll probably see it. In action your camera would be way closer because you need to properly target different parts on the boss (proepr utilization of action combat features), and if something comes from behind your back w/o your knowledge and, potentially, oneshots you - I'd assume most players ...

But that's the point though. In a tab mmo, the random attack from somewhere makes you react to it, and that attack can come from pretty much 360 degrees around your character. If you wanted to warn action players, that attack would only come from their cone of vision, or the ground indicator would be ginormous so that they can't miss it. At 5:30 in this video the dragons make a dash. There's no indicator where the hit will happen and by the looks of it the aoe is pretty big. I dunno if their order is randomized and ...

Well, to figure out if chaos is not the way to go we'd have to get Noaani to tell us about some super hard raids from EQ2 and whether those had chaos or just rng that players played against. But we know that Noaani won't tell us shit How far though? Especially in the context of "you need to target particular parts of the boss in front of you by aiming at them exactly. Btw, @Noaani I was thinking about this and got curious. Back in L2 no one cared about raid videos because the fight was super easy ...

Yeah, but you'd need awareness to do that dodge. And fov gives you that awareness. As I said before, imo having a huge mob that you don't have to aim at properly is not my definition of hardcore action combat content. Both of the videos you showed were closer to smth like LA in their design: you have ground hazards to dodge and you have aoeish and cone-based attacks that you use against a huge mob that moves slowly. If I was trying to design a "true action top lvl boss" I'd be using all of the action features ...

Yeah, I guess secrecy was a much bigger thing back in the day, just due to the overall amount of information that you could get back then. If only NCsoft cared about pve back then the pvp matchups would definitely get shaken up with a new update, but pve rarely changed all that much. You still had the usual suspects when you needed top dps for a raid. And I don't think that ever really changed. At most, you might've added a new class to the roster because they got a new cool debuff in the skillset, but that ...

It's not assumptions though. We literally have Noaani, Azherae and me who want top lvl raiding content in Ashes. And in order for that content to be top lvl, it'll need to utilize literally all the mechanics and combat features in the game to their limit. Otherwise it's not top lvl. And obviously it doesn't have to be the only content that's in the game. Afaik that was one of the reasons why Wildstar died. But it should be present if Steven really wants to appeal to high lvl raiders, and in the past he has alleged to want ...

Players can't flag on their guild/ally-mates so I'd assume that the multiple parties in the same place from the same guild but w/o a raid would be the main "exploit" for this suggestion, and they wouldn't friendly fire each other. Unless Intrepid implemented your suggestion and made it so that you did in fact friendly fire your guild-all-mates, but then you have a much larger problem of non-raided parties from the same guild participating in some activity and just killing each other, which, imo, is a much bigger problem than just "3rd party waiting for one of the sides ...

I addressed it with this. And continued to explain why I don't see that as difficult and not really a justification for having that kind of zoom in an action game.

I guess that's where we're different. I've been on all sides of this kind of interaction and to me it never seemed unfair. It was just battle tactics. I used them too, so why would I try and prevent my enemies from using them against me. Sometimes we'd even have "sacrificial" attackers that would PK the 3rd party's healers so that they couldn't kill us as easily. If Ashes has 3+ sides fighting over some content, I'd definitely have several glass cannon players with 0 PK count just to kill healers of any 3rd party. And then I'd tell ...

Yeah, you can ignore most posts on the forum at least until Alpha2. All we do is just argue pointless things in circles over and over and over and over again. And until we have the game in our hands to properly test and give real feedback on, there's not much we will achieve by discussing the same things with the same people. There might be a good point here and there and I do hope that Intrepid's mods/admins/managers read this stuff to see those good points, but even if they don't, we'll just have to remember those good ...

There would not be a level playing field. All you would do with your suggestion is just make sure that the 3rd party just stays back while they wait for one side of the conflict to win. They would most likely do this even w/o being auto-flagged, but now they'd do this for sure. Your suggestion brings 0 change to the interaction itself. It only makes it much much much worse for literally any raiding non-pvp group of players. You know all those people that want raiding to be its own thing? You've just fucked them all over with ...

As Penguin just said, the og raiders will have the upper hand because the newcomers will have to risk going Red in order to stop the raid. But even outside of that, depending on how ow bosses are balanced and designed, you might not even need a huge group of people to mess up a raid. If the boss is tuned in such a way that you need near-perfect gameplay - any solo rogue willing to go red against the raiders' healer will wipe the raid. He'd be green coming up to the raid because he's alone, so the ...

I'd assume a fair bit of cleric augments would lead to tanks standing around and taking dmg in order to trigger healing. Bard augments could potentially provide buffs in the same way, so maybe that too. L2's tanks had an ultra buff where they'd need to do or take dmg to build up a charge and then use that charge to trigger the buff. I could see smth similar through augments.

Considering sprinting in Ashes consumes mana (at least rn), I'd assume active blocks/dodges would consume mana too. So the whole process would be a dance around mana control and usages reduction, at which point it would just come down to looking at what's more beneficial - a dodge or a block. If that is not the case, I'd assume it'll come down to proper timings of ability usage (mainly dmg mitigation ones) and proper blocking that will consume stamina. And I'm assuming that purely on the basis of it being easier than a proper iframe dodge (unless active blocking ...

You do realize tab target exists, right? I don't think the tab crowd will be happy if people can body block their abilities.

I haven't played AA, so what exactly did you do in prison? Was it literally "you can't do shit in the game for some amount of time"? Cause that sounds like the literal worst mechanic to me. Yes, punish me for doing a bad thing in the game, but don't stop me from literally playing the game. And as for BHs, yes, I'm waiting for them to reveal more about their mechanic because I definitely want them to have more impact on the overall system.
Post by Ludullu on 2022-07-12 23:51:47
Does that work give you any benefit or is it a glorified minigame just to pass the time and shorten the sentence? You're being "punished by the system" for not fighting back too. You'll lose more stuff if you refuse to fight, while a potential harassing "criminal" would lose less if they were to die. So the whole system doesn't quite work by the logic of our real lives. If the prison work gives you benefits - you're rewarding killers. If it doesn't give you benefits - you're wasting people's time, on top of having already punished them by ...

L2 becoming fucking WoW. In both gameplay and p2wness. Though my relation to the game itself is more of a unique one cause I mainly played on private servers, so it's not like I can really complain about anything
Post by Ludullu on 2022-07-13 00:33:12
So you want to waste people's time instead of just punishing them. Doing mundane shit in the game is not really a punishment. Definitely not to me or any other L2 (or other grindy mmo) veteran. Especially if I can just go on a complete genocide until I get caught, because there's no system-based prevention for that kind of thing. Or does the criminal get auto-caught the very second they're done with their crime? Also, how long does the jury process take and how random is the picking of said jury? What about afk people who get caught by ...

Potatoh potahto, Dygz. It's about the pov. The point is, you're punished for dying. A "criminal" that attacks other people gets less of a punishment than a non-criminal does and a murderer gets an even bigger punishment - and that is not how irl works, while this prison system tries to imitate real life.
