PVP system thoughts

The funny thing is, Steven's trying to recreate a game from 2004 and goes against quite a few of the current trends in mmos, so no, it's not about "the kids these days", it's about "boomers trying to relive their old days". I'm one of those boomers and that's the main reason I even got interested in this game. And as Asgerr said, this has been the goal from the start, so I dunno how you got the wrong idea about the game.

Mmos are not single player games. And most of the time their features don't quite match up. What works in one genre doesn't in the other. Especially when we're talking about a truly massive mmo like Ashes.

I mean, the only thing that sets it apart from other mmos is the node system. Pretty much any other feature has been done before in some other mmo. But nodes have nothing to do with arrows being unlimited or not, so I don't see a correlation here.

The majority of mmos still alive are pve because they appeal to a broader audience (mainly younger one and those who can't play as much). But mmos started out as more hardcore and sometimes pvp ones, because the industry took more risks back then. I guess you just weren't in that bubble back then, which mainly tells me that it's not about your age but just about your personal preference in games. Back in mid 00s I mainly saw pvp mmos because that's what my friends and I were interested in. And we saw WoW as the casualiest trash ...

Say you're trying to gather some rare flowers in a dangerous location and a high lvl mob agroes on you and chases you. And you can't outrun it and die. How is this situation (which would be rare) any different to some rando attacking you once a week/month?

I think an additional resource that boosts/changes attacks for all classes could be cool, but that's pretty much what augments and enchantments gonna do so it's kinda pointless.

I mean, there is a way to have a 100% safe playthrough of Ashes. You get a hardcore gamer friend. You get him to give you a ton of money right at lvl1. You buy yourself a freehold and start crafting on it, never leaving its footprint. If there's gonna be a siege on your node, you just log off and skip it. If you win - no issue. If you lose - you just have your friend help you move your shit. Rinse and repeat.

I addressed that though. You yourself can dodge all the killing. Yes, you might lose a bit of stuff but if you're just trying to avoid death at the hands of another player - there is a way.

Dunno what cqc is, but weapon repair will require weapon mats iirc. Weapon mats will cost quite a lot of money (especially for high lvl weapons), so it'd be almost impossible to properly balance the cost values for arrows and mats to make them both cost the same as another class just fixing their weapon. Also, which amount of arrows do you set the cost reduction at? Is it the value of 1k arrows? A 100? 100k? How expensive do you make the mats for arrows then? How do you control the pricing in such a way that it's ...

From what I've seen in this thread, quite a few people have had experiences with limited resource classes and disliked it. So no, it's not just "this is why mmos die". And giving NW as an example of "they tried to do a risky thing and look at them now" is definitely not the best way of presenting your argument. Either way, several people have disagreed with your point and pointed out why it is bad. You've disagreed with their counterarguments, but haven't managed to prove why your point works despite the issues listed. I don't see this discussion ...

DPS Meter Megathread

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-01 17:14:16

Did you use it mainly for pve or for both pve and pvp? I dunno how classes worked in AA, but in L2 the pve meta never really changed because devs never even tried changing it, so using a tracker for pve wasn't really important. And in pvp you mainly just looked at what did most dmg and which CCs were the most successful and mainly used that, because there wasn't much of a rotation in L2. If AA is anywhere close to that, I'd understand why barely anyone used trackers. Though I remember you saying that your friends ...

I mean, maybe it was because I came into the game a year late and never played on the official servers with the big bois, but the party setup for top dps was always the same. Throughout ~6 years of updates only maybe 2-3 classes got added into the rotation and only because they got a new cool debuff that was useful in pve. So anyone who wanted to farm bosses used the same classes pretty much all the time. I personally hope this is not the case in Ashes cause I'd love the game to have such a ...

This would just make the meta be "you gotta be a military citizen if you wanna pve at the top", which is shit imo. Or at least the leaders would have to be, if the stat info can be applied to all the raid members. I do like specialties and limited availability based on different characteristics and stats. But I feel like this kind of feature being limited would be wrong.

Throne and Liberty systems similar to AoC & Their twist on them

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-01 19:58:03

It feels similar cause both are trying to continue Lineage 2's legacy. TL was supposed to be "L3". Kinda same as AA was back in the day. Steven played both L2 and AA and wanted to make a game that had their soul w/o the corporate corruption. But TL will in fact have the very same corporate corruption that destroyed L2, which is why I don't trust it'll succeed. I hope I'm wrong and that NCsoft have somehow managed to change in this past decade but I somehow doubt that.

Oh, and as for dirty deeds which are done dirt cheap during the night, I think Ashes will have the same gameplay w/o the system-based control. A ton of stuff in Ashes will be happening around server prime-time, so most BHs will be active and most guilds/parties will be running around together so PKing will be much harder (outside of some PKs during mob farming). While outside of prime-time you'll be more free to PK someone and try to grind off your corruption. Obviously it won't be the same as TL's system, but it might also be for the ...

Yeah, those sound realistic. Hope we learn more about Bards soon. L2 had amazing bards that were the backbone of the game and I definitely want AoC's bards to be the same.

Same as pretty much every other mmo, to my knowledge. That doesn't change the fact of our transactions with Intrepid.

How will open world dungeons function properly

Not all dungeons are meant to have the peak of pve difficulty. People will flag and will kill each other for loot. It has worked just fine in Lineage 2 for years so it'll work just fine here.

Your class name in a nutshell.

You can either just bring everyone below 50% hp and see their healer burn through mana and not have enough for mobs or you can just PK their healer and make them leave, while your PKer wouldn't really lose anything because it was an equally-lvled kill and didn't give him much corrutption. But, considering that travel times won't be instantaneous, wasting time running back to the dungeon might be way less beneficial than just flagging up against your attackers and just beating them. At least that's how it went down deep in L2's dungeons, and that game had TPs ...

I mean, I hope it's gonna be the same as L2 and everyone will just fight each other normally. But I've seen way too fucking many "waaaah I don't want to be attacked when I'm dancing with mobs" people to make me doubt this will be the case. And hell, we don't even know if the whole pvp system won't change before release. I sure as hell hope it doesn't, but there's no real assurance for that.

In L2 in practice you just PKed the enemy side if they didn't flag up AoC's players will have to be a bit more careful cause PKing is penalized more here. But yeah, most likely the PKer will die, but if the corruption balancing is not too harsh for equal-lvl kills, he'll just get his corruption cleared get ressed and the party will just continue, while the victims will have to do smth about their dead healer.

I think Dygz meant that the day/night PKing might work for TL, but thinking about it in Ashes is pointless cause we haven't tested the current system.

That probably stems from your passion for pve and the style of pve you experienced. Did you feel the same way when someone attacked you in AA? Or do you feel this way exactly because people were attacking you in AA while you were farming? Cause to me, being always on the look out during mob grinding was the biggest part of the thrill of the game. The mobs themselves gave me nothing (even in the harder fights), so potential attacks from other people excited me to no end.

How will open world dungeons function properly

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-02 02:34:41

Yeah, it's gonna be a very difficult balancing act for Intrepid to pull off. I wanted to suggest a mechanic inverse to the bosses' powerup when there's more people around, where normal mobs would instead become weaker, but then realized that this would just lead to everyone zerging mobs and easily farming shit. I think that a threat control tool in several classes could probably make this interaction more interesting and keep the mob difficulty high. Something like "the current threat list gets cleaned" and a "generate threat against a picked target" could throw a huge wrench into the ...

Holy hell, are these official or fanmade? Cause this is literally 2 items that defined ~5 years of my L2 gameplay. My very first character was a Silver Ranger with a BoP and my second favorite class is a Shillen Knight in full Doom and a Damascus (thx Excellion mvs). If these are official then TL is even more of a L3 than I thought it'd be

Yeah, there'd obviously have to be a ton of testing to properly time the cooldowns and the effects themselves, but I think there's a ton of potential variety in threat gameplay abilities, same with detargeting stuff. Hell, those abilities could just be the same ones, but with different effects on mobs/humans. Saves the game from bloat, while providing the split-second decision making for pvx situations, while also being useful in pure pve or pvp situations. Just design them well enough and you got yourself a ton of fun tools to use
