How will open world dungeons function properly

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-02 14:24:37

The whole point is that you can't just disengage the pve to fight the players. And if pve is challenging than any interruptions will fuck up both the pve and the pvp and you'll most likely just die.

And usually the other important factor is poor gear balancing. If just a single step in gear tiers is enough for those at the top to completely dominate anyone below them - of course it's gonna be easy for them to just prevent anyone from farming some piece of content. But if gear is fairly close in its power lvl, then even weaker-geared people might win out a few battles here and there and get a chance to farm.

You're in a limited space (if we're talking dungeons here). Mobs will most likely have a pull radius of the whole room and maybe even a bit outside of it. You're fighting the mobs in the room and dudes come into the room and start fighting you. How do you disengage the mobs here? And again, this is in the context of mobs being difficult and not just braindead weak ones.

How will open world dungeons function properly

L2's dungeons had a ton of dead end rooms and quite often they would have the best mobs in the dungeon or just a boss spawn point, so there weren't always a way out. As for notices, that would only work if you're a part of a guild that's at war with another guild and you're always on the lookout for them. But quite often you might just be a party of people who're farming a room and there's another random party that comes in and wants to fight you for that room. If you're a group of 8 ...

Then you and Noaani agree on this (the boss part that is) But what Noaani disliked was pvp around normal mobs, because, the chances are, that's what you gonna be doing way more than killing bosses. And if that process is boring (in the case of pvp being completely normal cause mobs are trash) or super unfair (mobs are hardcore, which leads to pvp destroying any kind of mob farming) - it'd lead to player dissatisfaction. And this problem can be solved fairly easily and I hope Intrepid manages to do it. If even I could come up with ...

Instanced vs Open World dungeons

I think it's better for you to never even play. There's gonna be, like, so many bots. I'm one of them right now!

Is this MMO going to have any monetary features?

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-02 21:47:02

Except free trials would have to limit pretty much every function in the game, because if the free player can be a part of the economy - the game will be killed by bots. And if you limit the player experience in the free trial, there's barely any point in said trial because it doesn't show the game properly. You could have a gameplay/combat demo as a completely separate entity, but then I'm not sure how many people would buy the game (especially at $20) just based off of that.

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-02 22:02:31

So a game with pretty much horizontal gear, a game that's infamous for being bot-ridden and a game that has a completely different monetization scheme. I don't think those are the best examples to counter AoC's free trial not fitting its design. Also, yes, there's always gonna be bots, but you can either limit their amount or not care about it. Having a full free trial with no restrictions would be the latter option. And it would make GM's work even harder than it already will be. AoC's market/gearing/crafting design are fully interconnected and keep all tiers of mats/gear ...

The whole genre of Gacha wants to introduce itself literal billions upon billions made through mtx. Which is also the main reason for why pretty much every other game in the current existence went the way of mtx. It just pays way more.

I hate that model as much as the next guy. I was just countering you "research says mtx ain't shit" argument. If it wasn't so profitable, why'd everyone and their mom use it.

As I've said in another post, I was just countering your "people would buy the expensive thing rather than the cheap one" comment. If that was always true, mtx wouldn't have become the biggest moneymaker in the gaming industry. I never once said that Ashes will use a gacha mechanic, nor was I implying they would/are.

Expansion Classes YAY or NAY?

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-03 12:35:17

As much as I agree with everyone else on this issue there's also the question of "will Intrepid downsize after release". Afaik quite a lot of studios do this to save money, but if, by chance, Intrepid has enough money to not do so, they'd have a shitton of devs pretty much sitting around doing nothing, while part of the team develops stuff for expansions (mainly locations/mobs/bosses/quests). Now I'm assuming that there might not be an overlap of devs between class/gear design and everything else. If that is not true and the devs that worked on gear 3d models ...

He wants the new ones to be completely disconnected from the old ones. Kinda defeats the whole damn point of how classes work in Ashes, but the example works within his suggestion.

Expansion Classes YAY or NAY?

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-03 15:43:36

It's not about what they've said at this point. It's about what they're doing. They've made 8 interdependent archetypes, so if they add more completely separated ones - people will ask why da fuck they did so. I definitely would. Why dilute your identity, when a game's identity is pretty much the only thing that makes the sales on the market.

Expansion Classes YAY or NAY?

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-03 15:50:50

Highly doubt it'll be that. L2's duelist was pretty much just a pure fighter, while here it'll be an almost pure rogue, with just some fighter spicing on top. Though maybe if rogues can spec into dual weapons and then add fighter's "hit hard"-type augment, then I guuuuuess it'd be similar? But for now I'd say not to hope for the same design between the two.

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-03 16:20:52

And I said exactly this in my first comment in this thread. Except I expect them to not slack off and do their full job. That being adding a fully integrated new archetype. It could take a year or two, but I'd rather see a proper archetype than several completely unrelated ones. If later down the line they decide to make a completely new realm outside of Verra and have completely new classes there - I'd be fine with that too, because that would make more sense than adding new archetypes to Verra. And if you had the same ...

L2 was like that too. You had this lil boi Turning into this big boi He was a great source of dps for support classes or even just for solo farming. And if you gave him some good gear, he could outdps some weaker dpsers There were also these bois, who provided you with healing/mana regen/buffs I think Ashes will have smth fairly similar.

Copying new world is going to ruin this game

Yes, the game will be niche and more hardcore than your currently trendy casual single player mmos. Intrepid know this and designed it in this way because they wanted to make a game like this.

Copying new world is going to ruin this game

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-03 18:36:31

From what I've seen of NW's gearing, crafting and storage system, the main problem seemed to be the overabundance of pretty much any and all resources in the game. You had a ton of mats to collect because you could collect everything around you. You had different gear drops (iirc), so your inventory would get filled up with random shit. And if you wanted to craft something, you needed a ton of resources on you or in your location. The map was also relatively small and made you move around it, instead of giving you an anchor in one ...

Would placing a bounty on a player be considered greifing

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-03 19:27:37

I mean, that doesn't seem to break any rules, except for many moral ones? PKing is allowed, paying others to do your job is allowed (mercs and shit), so why couldn't a PK be a job? There's the questions of repeatability of such actions and whether at some arbitrary limit it goes from feature to harassment, but I don't think Intrepid have given any such limits? Or maybe I've missed them doing so.

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-03 20:11:12

If anything, the question should be "what if I pay a mayor to make someone enemy of the state, would that be harassment?" Cause that mechanic is way worse than just some dudes earning themselves a ton of corruption for money.

Expansion Classes YAY or NAY?

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-03 20:14:13

Yeah, the brightest example of this for me is the difference between the general association with the word "Warlock" and L2's players' association with it. Generally people think about these cool dark powerful magicians who control dark magic (at least from what I've seen people say about warlocks), while L2's warlocks are this - a thin little boi who summons cute little kitties

Expansion Classes YAY or NAY?

A summoner with cleric+ranger augments could probably fit the Druid name. I'd assume Summoner's abilities will be long-form (that is, a summon's existence), so instead of a separate being coming to life, the summoner would turn himself into said being. And then any of active abilities would have healing properties on them. And you have yourself a druid. And here's a pic of L2's class called Monk It was a melee fighter class whose buffs were called Totems and were linked to different animals (rabbit would give you evasion and speed, wolf gave you crit dmg and atk, and ...
