"World Instances"

They'd need to clarify the "non-repeatable" statement then. Cause big instances with big drops would have to be repeatable, otherwise there'd only be a few items from them on the whole server and those would decay soon enough and you'd have no way of repairing them cause you can't go back into the dungeon to get the mats.

The solution is "don't separate your gear builds". And Intrepid want it that way https://ashesofcreation.wiki/Gear#Gear_types

It's cause they've said contradicting things. Or at least they seems contradicting w/o further clarifications. I'd be completely fine with the currently presented design cause I'm completely fine with sub-par pve supported by great pvp. But that kind of design removes any potential of appealing to more hardcore pve players, who could then pull in more softcore pve players. And w/o pve you wouldn't have a PvX game. If Intrepid somehow manages to get true open world bosses that are also super difficult, while not making them impossible to beat due to potential pvp - I'll be all the ...

I mean, you've literally just described a "world instance" that I described in the OP and which was the main form of Legendary Boss raids in L2 and pretty much what volcano dragon had, except the doors didn't close behind the raiders

Nah, I forgot to write "from alpha1". But I pretty much explained how it worked in my OP That's why I called it "world instance", cause it still had partial open world mechanics, while functioning like an instance (no one could disturb you once the fight properly began).

Not trying to be a dick here or anything, but that is literally what I was trying to do with my post and you'd know that had you not skipped it I wanted to see what people thought about the currently presented design direction of "open world vs instanced content". And I presented an example of how "instances" could be seen as "open world events". And kinda were exactly that in L2, which is a big inspiration for Steven. So far the majority believes that Intrepid can pull off their planned design. I hope so too, but we'll have ...

And as an example from L2, with its guild-based factions, if there's only one source for something - everyone will fight over it. Mainly because "why da fuck should I share this one top lvl piece of power with someone else, when my whole goal is to be stronger/better than them?" So yes, diplomacy does not work in these situations, especially when the whole premise of the game is built upon competition.

To Intrepid devs: Some thoughts after playing MHR:SB(things to avoid)

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-17 02:57:20

Didn't Rise come out for switch first? So it's a "shitty port" issue rather than a "default design" one. And the new system (from what I've skimmed here) seems like an expansion issue rather than an inherent one. It's good to have examples of what not to do, but these particular issues seem to not stem from the game's initial design (correct me if I'm wrong).

THE PROBLEM IN ALL MMOS - TANK SCARCITY & DUNGEON GROUPS

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-17 22:27:01

What if, and hear me out here, we had a "class statistic" when we were looking for a server to play on? So like, if Intrepid sticks to the "1 of each archetype parties" design goal, they could track how many of each archetype there is on the server (would probably have to be a "first character on the account" kind of tracker rather than a pure char one) and then advertise the imbalanced roles with some small text and maybe a video of some cool abilities from the archetype. So when a new player wants to play, say, ...

WoW Classic class design/fantasy and what made it so good and things we can learn from it

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-17 22:59:01

Yes, I agree that each archetype/class should have its own very specific utility. And the fact that each archetype has its own abilities, rather than get diluted with additional abilities from their secondary, leads me to believe that each archetype will be special enough to have their own identity. Especially if Intrepid does indeed balance party composition for 1 of each archetype. As for cross-class roles, augments should in theory cover that. Your healer wears heavy armor that gives him a ton of mana? Let him get tank as a secondary, add some threat generation on his heals and ...

Will the combat system utilize the vertical space?

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-17 23:01:05

Dungeons, bby! A shitton of potential vertical design. Pretty much every L2 dungeon had some sort of verticality, some more than others. Ashes could have the same. And I'd bet money that most of open world (that is, non-event one) pvp will be happening in dungeons.

While I do see your point and might even agree with it, I'd say that the chat spam issue could be resolved by some chat filter options. L2 had a nice system where you'd just not see the spam that people would shout in the trading channel (chat channels are obviously needed too) And you could change these filters for each chat channel too.

If you got friends to play with - ya ain't got class problems. Could definitely account for lvl/activity too. And most likely even should, cause, as we both pointed out, there'll be cases of people playing on their alts instead of their mains.

Unless that group of friends goes directly against the alleged design of "1 of each is optimal" - they'll just add number of people on the server rather than bring imbalance to the classes. But even if we assume that it's not a full stack of people and they did go against that design - one (or even a few) group of friends is nothing in the face of the potential 10k players on the server. But I think I get what you're saying, if people just choose servers w/o looking at the stats or caring about minmaxing their ...

Global chat would still be part of the filters. Also, there might not even be a global chat (and I sure as hell hope there isn't). And as the right screen shot in my post shows, you can also just filter out particular words (i.e. wts, wtb, wtt, etc), so even if there is a global chat - you can still tune out any and all potential spamming. And as the final defense against such spam, GMs could enforce the "trade posts only for trade chat" rule, if there is a global chat after all. Or maybe there could ...

This channel doesn't allow clips and a ton of others don't even have vods, so this is a bit janky. At 0:16:20 there's a runthrough of L2's classic marketplace. You see people's short descriptions of what they have, you click on their "stall" and see their prices and maybe other items. I imagine AoC's markets to have the same core idea, but just done in a cleaner way. https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1558361130?t=0h16m20s

Node system question

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-18 01:04:33

Asmon himself literally says in the video "oh shit I didn't even know wiki existed" Like, yeah, logically one would assume that each and every game has at least some form of fan wiki. But most people don't even fucking try looking for it. I've seen countless threads at this point where people had no clue that wiki existed. And AoC's wiki is promoted on each damn corner of the internet related to the game.

Yeah, and says that he had no clue about it before the video. So even he, who's allegedly very interested in the game, didn't know about it. And most of twitch chat doesn't even watch any other videos about the game and only sees Asmon reactions, so of course they wouldn't know about the wiki if he never did. Which then leads to the situation where one of the thousands of people that saw Asmon's reaction get deeply interested in the game and go to reddit/forum/discord and ask the classic questions or bring up old topics (not necessarily saying ...

Issue with Pre-Order Pack Cosmetics

Iirc 375 if for all the cosmetics and all the other stuff, so with 125 being the cosmetics price, the wall is 250. And out of those 250 it's mostly gametime and embers, with 3 keys that I think are about $30-50 each. Cosmetics are never tangible. Cosmetics are always priced at however greedy the studio is. The fomo is always subjective, so yes, subjectively it could be seen as a terrible way to monetize support of the game. I personally couldn't give fewer shits about these cosmetics and when I do buy the alpha2 access - I'll be ...

Issue with Pre-Order Pack Cosmetics

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-18 05:00:12

The main "problem" here (though it's not really) is that this has been discussed every other month for the past several years. I'd even imagine it has been discussed since the very beginning of this development. Nothing has changed in that time and nothing will change. The prices are as they are because of kickstarter prices and the cosmetics are as they are because Steven likes them that way (it's a collector thing). So while we're all free to discuss this for the 100th times, we're also as free to say that the 101st time won't change shit.
