Would definitely like to see smth like this in future expansions/updates.

Oh shit! Might have to come back to it. Played a bit of it a year ago and loved it but fell off due to "reasons". Imo foxhole is one of the best "players do everything in the game" games out there. Intrepid should definitely look at it for any potential potholes of this kind of design direction.

I think that's just the biggest indicator of AoC's potential success. If people are ready to suffer through a mess of a game that is AA - they'd probably love Ashes, if it manages to be all that it wants to be.

While I did use this feature a ton in L2, there's also the fact that L2 had TPs overall. And once you got Noblesse you had even more options of TPs, especially deep within dungeons. So summoning dudes to your location deep in a dungeon didn't seem as that big of a problem there. But imo Ashes should prevent people from any kind of summoning inside dungeons because traversal is way more important here. You want to replace a party member after having spent a ton of time fighting through mobs and war enemies? - Go do that again ...

Nah, I meant it more as a "AA's good parts are enough to keep some people playing even through the shitty parts". Ashes will have quite a lot of the same good parts (and even more), while probably not having the bad ones. Which means that it would attract and hold people even better than AA did/does.

To me, that's the life of a party in a party-based game. You have to plan accordingly and account for any possible member losses along the way. And a lot will depend on how important any given member is. If the whole party loses its pve potential completely from just losing one member - yeah, it'll be a bad time. But this would also be a bad party design imo. Yes, let them lose some power but not all. L2's bards had that kind of power void and as much as I liked them in L2, I definitely hope ...

Material Scarcity for Repairs.

This was one of the reasons why I made a post related to the crafting system (the post itself was about OE). I'd personally prefer a "time-based" decay system rather than a "through use" one. If you craft a sword and see "this item will completely decay in 60h of equipped time" and you know that one instance of repairs restores, say, 20% of the decay bar and costs a particular amount of resources - you can plan out your gameplay around that. Intrepid wants us to be super loyal to our nodes so, in theory, you should spend ...

Material Scarcity for Repairs.

Post by Ludullu on 2022-09-15 03:20:39

Yeah, that'd be the micromanagement of you properly utilizing your items. You'd usually either run with nothing in your hands or a weaker but easier to repair weapon (well, in L2 we did). And once you saw that you might need your better gear - you equip it. This would also require constant awareness from players, which is a good thing to have in an owpvp game. At its core, this is the same as having your gear decay "on use", but it's way easier to track than some arbitrary equation of "t3 decays by 0.1% from each hit ...

Ah, in that way - yeah, it's barely even an issue. And it's the "mid-tier" gear I was talking about in my comment here. Your mid-tier stuff would still break down as it should, but replacing it with another mid-tier local thing would be super easy, all while you keep your cool sword for the special occasions that might arise.

I've been burning my gear for 12 years and loved it Would definitely prefer if Ashes had full destruction on failed OE.

Over-enchanting drama

Post by Ludullu on 2022-09-15 22:00:36

Correlation =/= causation. There's compound issues in most games. And some of those games have burn on OE failure. But that feature is the breaking point for only a part of the playerbase rather than the whole. And I'm pretty sure you were a part of the last conversion on OE mechanics. And I explained why I think that item destruction is a good thing. The biggest reasons being gear sink and gear equalization.

Yeah, and I'm the crab that would hold them down if they couldn't break through on their own. Which is why I said that kind people like you and Noaani are stopping the naturally superior people from standing out as much, because with you helping non-superior people the success of "gods" won't seem as big. Well, Intrepid claim that skill will amount to at least half of player's power so I might be wrong in my assumption but we'll see about that.

I'm not completely sure that retention was lower. Maybe it's nostalgic super bias, but older games seemed harder but still fun (even when difficulty came from unfair mechanics sometimes). And if you beat some commonly regarded as super difficult stage of some game, you'd be seen as superior and more skillful (one of the bigger examples of this I remember is the toy helicopter mission from Vice City). And if you couldn't beat it yourself but knew someone who could, you'd try to socialize with them and ask for help, be it verbal or direct "do it for me" ...

How difficult is it to win in BDO's pvp against someone with better gear? Is it impossible due to bad gear design or is it just very hard and depends on the difference of skill? Obviously mmo's balancing is never as tight as fighting games' one and never as fair as smth like a CSGO or other team shooter, but pvp mmos still present you with the "beat the human" difficulty rather than just a pve one. But I guess that's kinda what you were talking about here Which usually resulted in most players leaving because they weren't prepared ...

For me that'd depend on the quest. If it's some basic gathering/farming task/quest, I'd be fine if people could share those. But if it's some valuable, maybe even difficult to find, quest - nah, no sharing for you. Only if it completes the quest for the questholder. And if everyone in the party has the same quest - they'll need to farm their amount each. I expect that feature to just be an option for looting rights. This was exactly how my party set up the looting rights in L2. Though there was no rolling for loot. You just ...

Don't see where the autolock was and tab target games are literally meant to send your spells towards the target that's "tabbed". What I saw is just him targeting the mob and then using spells that went towards his target. The usual tab target mechanic.

I must've just gone down a self-imposed tangent in my head and missed the thread of the overall conversation Yeah, I agree that any PvX mmo is a pure meritocracy because there'll always be someone who'll stop you from increasing your "merit". Especially pvx mmos with free market. Want to kill mobs? Fuck you, you can't because another dude played x2 as much as you and/or has better gear and skill, and he always kills you when you approach the mobs. Want to become a top trader? Fuck you, a mafia guild is controlling the market completely. Want to ...

Do you have any ideas for this? Cause I can't really come up with any that would fit a pvx game, outside of the obvious instanced content that is either easy enough or just doesn't scale the loot value with its difficulty. Would trackers give a much bigger advantage than, say, a dps dummy? Obviously they provide some tangible advantage against a semi or fully scripted pve encounter, but in my experience mass pvp is just too chaotic to properly assess what led to what, if you were trying to figure out what to avoid in future mass pvp ...

But I'm not even talking pattern-based events. I'm literally talking "I, as a healer, was killed by a rogue and after that the whole party died because the healing stopped". And "a whole fucking party of people didn't run out of an aoe in time and that whole front of attack crumbled because of that". I've seen those things happen in L2 countless times and I've been in such situations qutie a bit too. And pretty much everyone, including the main victims, knew what had happened and why it did. And that is why I made the comparison of ...

Yeah, just like tab target games do with tab target abilities. The alternative to that is turning your character automatically and then shooting out the ability, but I'd assume that skill just works like that, considering that animation accounted for that situation. Again, I see nothing wrong with that video, considering it's a tab target ability.

I'd say that my preferred class of SoulHound in L2 was the closest to this. The only thing it was missing was some form of ultimate defense ability (it got it in a later update at the cost of some nerfs), but it compensated the physical part of the received dmg by having a strong evasion buff. It also had a fairly op paralyze ability, but even outside of that "one fits all" tool it had a ton of variety for most situations in the game. It was my favorite class so if Intrepid manage to design their classes ...

I lost my point in that last post. I was trying to get at the point of "trackers might not give you the perfect solution for mass pvp, so their presence or absence wouldn't really be felt there".
