And again! This one happens in FFXI AND Elite Dangerous. FFXI: When areas change controlling factions in Conquest (different from Campaign where they just come or go), the NPC guards responsible for the outposts in those regions change out. Different NPCs from different home nations stand guard and provide services to players in those areas. Elite Dangerous: When a station changes hands between factions due to the outcome of a war or election in the system, the staff at that station changes. New names, new portraits, new text. Every time. If the old faction takes control back, the old ...

Well, this goes back to the FFXI Campaign Ops I was mentioning earlier. You can be contracted to: Collect intelligence on enemy-held positions. Gather specific necessary supplies for your army. Take out enemy supply convoys. Deliver supplies to contested territory. Escort new personnel to the fort they're being assigned to. Determine strategy for deploying NPC supply convoys based on enemy positions, etc. Patrol for suspicious/dangerous stuff left in the city by enemy operatives. Kill bandits. Move some of the army's mounts around, based on logistical requirements. Transport dangerous materials (which inflict random penalties on the bearer) Clear out dangerous ...

Okay! Yeah, but players SUCK. They'd just kill ANY NPC that could be killed. Every single one. Some asshole will do it for teh lulz. And now that affects everyone. This might be okay, sort of, except that it'll become some people's whole thing . Even if not, no NPC will last more than a day. It wouldn't even matter if it was "influencing it somehow so that X NPC gets in an accident eventually due to taking more risky trade routes". Somebody would do it just to grief someone else who loved that guy. The more famous and ...

I feel Chicago has a perspective closer to ours. While this will be at least somewhat interesting, we're not going to feel like we've learned anything about the game's core systems. We'll get to see a lot of technical details about how they've implemented things that we already know they will have, and a good implementation of those is important to the experience, but their technical staff is competent. We already know they'll manage something acceptable, but at the end of the day, we're still going have huge open questions about all of the things Chicago mentions. Scene transitions, ...

They do something like this in BDO. You have farms that you can invest in ('buy') which are similar to freeholds, except that you can get a bunch of different ones. You then have workers that you can hire to work on the farms for you. This is how they do all their other forms of crafting, but I can NOT approve. This is the worst, unimmersive style of production management I've ever seen. The only thing it grants me is that I can never personally do anything related to my farms. Now, those "farms" are just resource collection ...

So now they're a pure maintenance requirement? You've effectively added a step to the process just so you could be required to hire NPCs to do it. (Or waste time on it yourself. See my earlier discussion of 'optimal' vs 'suboptimal') I don't personally see a way to do it that's not either 'arbitrary maintenance buff requirement', or denying players the 'crafting class fantasy' for the portion of the job they cover.

Isn't the natural solution to this something else? "If you don't like tending to a farm, don't be a farmer." What these sorts of NPC management games do, specifically , is let everyone be a farmer, even if they don't like to spend their time farming. That means that everyone who can will produce crops, because there's no reason to leave it to someone else. That anti-specialization is not great for the economy. If you don't like the gameplay of actually farming... maybe you're not a farmer. Maybe you're a hunter, or crafter, or just straight up adventurer. Go ...

Granted. But it's important to realize that economies in games are built on 1. Time invested (because that is all you have TO invest, as a player) 2. Specialization (or everyone will just always do the current most profitable thing) If you get rid of either of those things, you literally don't have an economy anymore. You have what BDO has. At best.

Woo! New data!
Post by SongRune on 2023-04-13 23:07:48
Absolutely. There's no feeling worse than failing in some stupid or basic way, because you couldn't find your groove, and dragging down the night for your entire team, because the first attempt took long, or there's no time to try again. I come from work, and sometimes life obligations, that have a tendency to leave me in all sorts of different strange states. Tense. Distracted. Pissed off at a colleague. You know how it can be. It's not easy to go from dealing with frustrating incompetence, or bad luck, right into a full power performance in a competitive game. ...

Can we get wind chimes for our houses or freeholds?
Post by SongRune on 2023-04-30 01:20:04
To expand on this, as the The Fey player, here are some ability combinations I appreciate: One of my preferred ways to build magical power is Dreambinder , which has a Chilling Strikes attribute: "Damaging abilities Slow affected Units by 25% for 1s." The Fey has the Untamed Growth ability, which places a circular DoT template on the ground for 2.5s. This is my primary damage ability under most normal circumstances. Adding Dreambinder makes this damage ability double as an escape ability, and give me another way to prevent enemies from escaping my party in a teamfight. Because it ...

What equipment slot does a Bard's Instrument take up?

Introduction to solo content: You have abilities. Learn to time your CC, Heals, or Burst to be effective. Introduction to party content: You have a tank, a healer, and DPS. Perform your role to control the situation or the enemy will kill everyone. When you're comfortable, look for chances to synergize! Introduction to raid content: You have multiple subgroups with distinct individual roles. You will need to adapt to changing situations in a coordinated manner, not just focus on your own role. Tumok is a nice introduction to parties, but with its current level of depth, it won't introduce ...

Will it be possible to choose the direction your freehold faces on a plot (particularly when using cosmetics from preorder packs), or will this already be determined by the plot you choose?

I much prefer to have these types of discussions in the context of threads relating to specific mechanics (caravans, resources, corruption, etc). At least in those contexts, I know people have some basic foundation and shared focus for what they're discussing. Even as an active Alpha 1 tester, I don't have a good concept of the PvE vs PvP balance of the game. We've seen the basics of both, but Alpha 1 explicitly had none of the socioeconomic factors that would drive them to intermingle. Everything was separate. Non-consensual PvP was even disallowed (on threat of permaban) for 95% ...

As promised, I'm the least skilled RPer in our group. This type of "Custom Quest" box helps support RP and immersion in a lot of ways: If I can't play for a few days, particularly if I'm busy or work is stressful, I can often forget what I was up to, or, more importantly, forget the details of the reason or context context that made it a personal experience rather than just a mechanical goal. This type of "custom quest" box gives me an easy way to remind myself and get back in the flow, rather than losing momentum, ...

Wait seriously? Are these numbers correct? 85 nodes. 50 apartments (hell, let's say mayor builds double: 100 apartments). That's 8,500 people with housing. 50,000 registered accounts per server. Hell let's double it again. 17,000. And again. Every mayor in every possible node builds 7 extra apartment buildings instead of something else. 34,000. At 50,000 registered accounts per server, that's 16,000 homeless people without even instanced housing. The 8*85=680 (or doubled 1,360 (or doubled-doubled 2,720)) non-instanced node houses aren't even gonna make a dent. (16,000-2720)/85=156. Are there gonna be 156 freeholds at every single node? I really hope you did ...

He was very clear in today's stream that that applies only to your house. Your fields and processing stations have no protection. You can absolutely be ganked while processing, and have all your goods taken.

It's more that you care WHICH plot your freehold is on. Tavern right outside the popular dungeon is going to be popular.

It's not quite "how many freeholds will exist", but I'll just leave this here, as it's related. From the feedback thread... In terms of the "You don't need a freehold. There will be lower tier housing for everyone" argument... Maybe not? This is obviously equally rough back of the napkin math based on numbers I didn't personally verify. But then again... I did it the generous way. I doubled, and doubled, and doubled, even when there might be more profit to be made with different mayoral investments. I assumed every possible node was built up fully (in terms of ...

Will enhancing make Bard Instruments more powerful directly, or will they probably just be cheaper or different to enhance/enchant?

I love this whole "use higher quality materials to boost your recipe" thing. High Quality items are normally something one has to work toward via 'spamming the RNG', which is meh. I haven't personally experienced this type before, and I love the simplicity. You can put in exactly as much work as you want, and get proportional results. But better yet, you can choose where you want to spend your higher-quality resources. I expect that the resource acquisition system will be the one that matches this design, and I really hope it is. I hate having to convert my ...

That's been changed. Steven confirmed in Discord after the stream that you can grandmaster two professions not from the same branch. It's possible that will change in the future, however.

Has the team considered weather-dependent procs in the Bow skill trees or Ranger Augments?
Post by SongRune on 2023-12-13 15:52:29
I disagree with Azherae on the following aspect: While I like the idea of having recipe drops with varied stats, I'm somewhat concerned that this will create a situation where I have too many variant recipes available when crafting in a way that makes it difficult to select the one you're interested in. If you have a small pool of fixed recipes, what will I use the recipe drops for when I've gotten several? If I can sell them on auction, I feel like they lose immersion value as well as remove the regional specialization that would be a ...

I'd be far more concerned if I didn't believe Intrepid was listening to this type of feedback and weighing it appropriately. A bit of what you've mentioned could be a stretch, but a lot of it is just 'the basics' or things that don't take that much time. If you don't trust Intrepid to manage their own scope, Ashes is already a lost cause. Intrepid needs people who are willing to say things like this in order to inform their direction , and understand which of various styles of gameplay their community is interested in. They will face a ...

When I watched this showcase for the first time, I remember feeling "I don't want to play this." It wasn't really clear why exactly, though. It's not that different from TL's Longbow, which I quite enjoyed. As a result, I had to sit down and watch the whole thing again as I prepared to write this... One thing I noted right away, is that I hated the attack speed. It's unimmersively fast. I just sortof assumed that this was the shortbow, and I'm definitely a longbow type of gal, so I gave it a pass. That said, my first ...
