Additional abilities in addition to the first and second archetypes.

Post by SongRune on 2022-10-22 13:12:06

You will not get new skills from your Secondary Archetype (augments only, which tweak your existing skills). Races and Social Organizations will also provide augments. I haven't heard talk of them giving you skills. You will not get new skills from your Weapon (but you do get a skilltree full of passives). That said, in Alpha-1 (the latest/only public testing period so far) there was at least one quest item that could be used as an active skill. It effectively cast fireball on a specific type of undead creature. Based on that, I believe your answer is most likely ...

Illusions, Glamours, and Disguises

Rogues will have Stealth. I don't know about any Disguise. Rangers will have Camouflage. This will be an appearance based thing, letting them blend into terrain.

Map Size vs. Player Count

Post by SongRune on 2022-10-22 19:27:47

It doesn't tend to happen at random evenly distributed locations across the map. It happens near good resources. It happens near convenient resources. It happens at popular grind sites. It happens along travel routes. Players come into conflict through activities, not random chance.

open dungeon boss respawn timers

For bosses that can be "daily": 20 hours +/- 4. This means you have to waste your whole play session camping the boss to see if it's respawned. If you don't, it'll be up for someone else to claim before you can gather your whole group again. For bosses that need to respawn "quickly": Option #1: Respawn 20 +/- 5 minutes after no-one is in the boss room anymore. They now have to wait outside and grind the mobs (so the mobs don't grind them). Other groups who are interested in joining now have plenty of time, and a ...

Don't ban people who exploit.

Post by SongRune on 2022-10-23 14:46:45

If you don't want water damage, you need to do both. If you don't want a toxic community, you need to do both. Why would you ever do that? You do both. No one here has ever suggested banning exploiters and then not fixing the exploits, because that would be stupid. You fix the exploit, then review the server logs, find the list of people who did X thing Y times during Z period, and feed it to "banhammer.pl". Here's an interesting philosophical question: If an exploit exists, and no-one exploits it, does it matter? Hint: The answer is ...

open dungeon boss respawn timers

Post by SongRune on 2022-10-23 15:20:22

I'm going to take advantage of this thread to talk about something else I've been wanting to which is related: 24 hour timers. If you want players to be able to do something only once per day, don't set a 24 hour lockout. In practice, that means that if I do the thing at 8pm, then the next day I end up doing it at 8:15, cause I have other things going on. Later, it'll be at 9pm, eventually at 10pm. You get the idea. It makes play sessions inflexible, and forces players to skip days to reset their ...

Proposal: Toggle for cosmetics with individual player white / black lists

Post by SongRune on 2022-10-23 15:36:55

You... really think so? How do most games ban aimbotters and wallhackers, then? Those are pure client side modifications, too. I'll be very slightly disappointed if we can't datmod to customize our look a little on our own clients, but it's not even a little hard to detect and prevent "asset corruption" of that sort. If you hook the client directly to bypass that type of check, you'll look exactly like a cheat mod, and they've definitely got ways to ban those. In a PvP game, protection against this sort of thing is natural and practically an automatic decision ...

green alt spys?

Post by SongRune on 2022-10-23 16:22:51

You gonna do this solo? My full party will just kill you outright. One of us will take the corruption, you die. We go back to grinding it off with him. You come back? The time it took you to get back halfway through the dungeon solo was long enough to burn off most of that guy's corruption. A different one of us will take the corruption. By the time you get back a third time, the first guy will have burned his off. You COULD keep this up. It'd be an... interesting way to spend your playtime. More ...

Solutions for bots - Best ideas (?)

Almost zero consumer grade internet providers will give anyone a static IP. Your IP changes over time. With IPv4 exhaustion as a serious concern, huge swaths of internet providers (nearly all ISPs in many countries; many university housing departments in the US) will combine hundreds of unrelated customers onto the same IP address. Add to this that someone malicious has numerous ways of getting other IP addresses. It's not a bad thought, it's just that it's the way we defeated ban evaders in the early 2000s. You've needed more advanced tactics since about that era. It's still useful sometimes, ...

Should False Mass Reports Be Punished?

Post by SongRune on 2022-10-24 00:21:36

Eh. Inconsistency gets people frustrated, and it doesn't gain you much either (in this space). Perma-banning people on their first offense also gives no buffer for mistakes or misjudgements by GMs. Sucks to be unfairly sanctioned, but a warning or suspension for a first time offense is way better than losing your account to a mistake. (Best outcomes if the 'offense count' flag resets after a year of good behavior) Warn > Suspend > Ban will take slightly longer to get rid of toxic players, but it will get rid of them.

Should False Mass Reports Be Punished?

Post by SongRune on 2022-10-24 00:39:15

It's not supposed to. The point of warning is not to deter hardcore assholes. Only bans EVER do that. The point of warnings is to deter childish people who need a nudge or clarification of social norms. The point of suspensions is to deter trolls and persistent (mental) children who need a reality check. Only bans will ever deter assholes, but you can't always tell who you're targeting, and it's usually a waste of GM energy to try to find out. The ones that need banning will ignore the warnings and get banned. We don't need to ban children ...

Corruption Exploit

9. Have bounty hunters camp your freehold 10. Have gatherers avoid your freehold so you have to run further while camped by bounty hunters. Your stats will also be going down, and down, and down, as you do this, unless you work off all the XP debt from your corruption (as the ever-increasing PK count continues to make it worse each time). Per the wiki, stat damping from XP debt not apply only to corrupted players.

Discussion: The connection of Open PvP and Economy & A Soft Flag System that makes sense.

Post by SongRune on 2022-10-24 15:30:44

I mean. Yeah. It's very easy. It's just very pointless. Trash drops exist only to force players to play the 'inventory' minigame, and sometimes to force players to stop farming and go home early if they want to keep getting that little bit of money for their grinding. That doesn't add to the game, it only detracts from it. This doesn't even benefit the system you proposed, @novercalis . You don't need grey items to make it work. If it soft-flagged for "everything above grey" and there was no grey, then it would work exactly the same , soft-flagging ...

Dungeon Griefing Idea after Asmongold reacts to Lucky Ghost

Post by SongRune on 2022-10-24 15:49:15

While I'm not entirely against the "official guard payment contract" idea, it's worth noting that the guards will largely be other members of the same guild, or close allied guilds, not random hirelings. Cheating them already comes with large social consequences (probably guild war, short term, and loss of allies long term). You can't use waves of mobs, because they need to be at full HP/MP/etc at a moment's notice to defend. It might be interesting to give them a way to watch the raid while defending it. This would produce some interesting gameplay where the analysts and possibly ...

Idea for Identifying kits in AOC

Post by SongRune on 2022-10-24 17:09:31

"Identifying" your item to find out what you even have (stats-wise or generally) is a terrible idea. I can see this sort of "Market Newsletter" style 'identify' being useful, though. Particularly if there's a cost to them that makes it an actual decision. It turns bad quickly if this is something most people would want to use more than once or twice a day.

Corruption Exploit

Post by SongRune on 2022-10-24 17:16:38

XP Debt is a normal death penalty for non-corrupt players. Dying won't remove that. Stat damping is an effect of XP debt. Dying lowers your corruption level, and brings you closer to being Green again, but it won't get rid of death penalties that even Green players experience. End result: You're Green and have a ton of XP debt and therefore stat damping. It's true that you can't be killed and drop your items now, but you're not free from penalty entirely.

Dev Discussion #46 - Materials: Less is More or More is Less?

Post by SongRune on 2022-11-17 19:12:06

I don't tend to be quite focused enough on the actual details of game economies to know the right way to build one. I leave that to Azherae most of the time. I gotta say though, don't make useless damned items. BDO has many types of trees. This is good. If you don't have variety, it's gonna suck, but they also have a couple varieties that can be used to craft ZERO items. You heard me right. Zero. Their only purpose in game is "sell to NPC, I guess". This annoys the hell out of me. I still have ...

[Feedback Request] Day & Night Cycle w/ Constellations Shown in November Livestream

Post by SongRune on 2022-12-02 20:23:51

As a Bard, I'm relieved that you have decided to keep players visible and identifiable at night. While most classes can function from the moment they are attacked, Bards need time to buff (and choose buffs correctly based on the opponent) in order to function effectively at all. Darkness that obscures the identity of approaching opponents is a meaningful class-specific nerf that would have been a major red flag for me. From that perspective, more powerful darkness isn't a problem, but it has to be limited to areas that are clearly intended as group-only content. If most other classes ...

Dev Discussion #47 - Tanking: Threat Mitigation

Post by SongRune on 2023-01-04 22:24:21

Threat management should be an active consideration from before the engagement even begins: Who pulls might depend on party statuses, other enemies in the area, what buffs or prep is underway by others, requiring their time or focus. It should be a continuous consideration for the entirety of the fight: Tanks have the greatest focus, but the arrangement of buffs from your Bard, who and in what order the Cleric heals, how the DPS manage their abilities, and what the Rogue does to move threat around in order to allow additional tactical choices on behalf of other teammates should ...

Dev Discussion #48 - Training (PvP)

Post by SongRune on 2023-02-08 18:55:37

What kind of tools would people have to defend themselves when this happens? Do Bards get AoE sleep, for instance? Even if so, and that'd be one of the strongest defense types, eventually this wears off, or you get too many trains of enemies dropped on you relative to your cooldowns. This sort of thing seems like it will just become a contest of who can train better, and who can defend trains better. But to defend a train, you'd have to either clear it, re-train it on your opponents, or stall it back out long enough for your ...

Ashes of Creation on Linux/Proton Compatibility Layer support

Post by SongRune on 2023-02-19 18:52:58

It's important to understand that for many of us Linux users, this is a matter of Intrepid clicking one box when configuring EAC. We can normally handle the rest. If you look at these forums, and the frequency of this question, and the broad support it tends to receive from Linux users present and interested, there are absolutely enough Linux players to justify that 10 minute investment. The biggest thing Linux users need is simply to not be BANNED when we run the Windows build on our Linux PCs. A Linux-native build would be spectacular, but there probably isn't ...

Which games have real living worlds?

Post by SongRune on 2023-03-21 17:30:42

Okay This happens in FFXI. Not for normal mobs that wouldn't have access to 'gear' in the first place, but the ones that would actually have access to proper supplies and armorers do. In FFXI's Campaign, the enemy armies do continuously upgrade their gear and supplies, and players have to do special missions to affect both their own army's resources (supplies, defenses, etc), and those of the opposing NPC armies. This even extends to things like training and military intelligence. If nobody bothers to do anything about it, the enemies will be stronger, and more coordinated, and you're going ...

Which games have real living worlds?

Post by SongRune on 2023-03-21 17:49:12

Okay Not so! In FFXI, in the icy north, there are certain areas that you can only pass when there's no Blizzard Weather active. You have to time your travel appropriately if you want to visit certain areas. In FFXI's tropical volcano, there are lava flows that shift over time. If you want to pass, you have to wait around, or bring along some concentrated essence of elemental ice to spend to open the passage for a few seconds. In addition, while it's not a general navigation hazard in the overworld, we also sometimes take on a mission that ...
