Proposal: Toggle for cosmetics with individual player white / black lists

Post by SongRune on 2022-10-20 00:06:18

It's 50,000 * 50,000. Each user has white/black tags for 50,000 other players. The server as a whole has 50,000 users. Also, the answer is 6.25 KB per user. Which doesn't even need to ever be on the server side, but if you wanted to sync it, it'd still cost under $7/month in AWS S3 storage for the whole server. Nonetheless, you'd never bother storing it that way, because an individual user on average isn't gonna have even 1,000 entries on their list. You don't even need the 6 KB, in that case.

Don't ban people who exploit.

Post by SongRune on 2022-10-20 13:03:33

So wait, you were saying "don't ban exploiters before launch "? There are several types of people in question, differentiated by their reactions to finding an exploit: 1. Realize that something's broken. Try it again to confirm the details, write up a test case and contact support. This person isn't an exploiter. They're not exploiting the system for any form of gain. This is the type of person you describe as "your QA team". They respect the intended game systems. No sensible company ever bans these players. It's not even a question. They don't exploit. If a company is ...

He hasn't made up his mind about what PVP will feel like. He has made up his mind about when Steven has told us PVP will happen. He's never said anything negative about what PVP combat will feel like, only about the incentive structure that determines when it will happen. The other important point to note is that he did not invest in the thing that Ashes has recently changed into. The thing he invested in is the Ashes that he was explicitly told would not be this way . (Whether his interpretation was correct or not is not ...

When a type of thread like this comes up, it's important to remind new visitors that: The purpose of the corruption system is to encourage PvP by encouraging players to fight back more, and to PvP more. Corruption is there only to discourage serial ganking, and give uneasy players a way to ease into PvP and get comfortable with it. Dungeons are one of the places that PvP is most intended to happen. There cannot be a higher penalty for killing players in dungeons because the design intent is for players to fight over good dungeons. If you're new ...

Post by SongRune on 2022-10-20 16:07:38

There are a LOT of other PvP worlds people have lived in. "What various types of them feel like" isn't really news... Ashes of Creation went from one somewhat novel type, to an old, well known one. People do already have some experience with the "Open Seas" style, and with the type of community that comes with it. If he ever does (which I doubt), he would probably do it by saying "I've had [this] experience, and it changed my perspective because...". I certainly hope we don't fault people for changing their opinions when they learn new things or ...

Indeed it does, and that's the game Dygz invested in. He didn't invest in a non-PvP game. He invested in a game with "player corruption as a means to prevent the game from becoming a murder box". He put a lot of effort into verifying this, too. He was told there would be PvP events and objectives like sieges and caravans, but otherwise there would in fact be "player corruption as a means to prevent the game from becoming a murder box". Ashes of Creation today is a game where "player corruption as a means to prevent the game ...

What I feel is a serious problem with AOCs class system and how to, at least partially fix it.

No disagreement with your content, but you should probably take note that "Archetypes" are "Mage", "Tank", etc. It's the "Secondary Archetype" that changes the feeling of your "Primary Archetype". The combination of the two is a "Class". What you were saying was clear to me, but might trip up some newbies who have just gotten started on their Ashes journey.

bag space and the overflow of your inventory

Post by SongRune on 2022-10-20 18:43:11

I note that the OP made no reference of any kind to node destruction, and the mail system doesn't relate to any of their actual questions or the thread title. As for an actual answer... We know that both slots and weight will matter, and that space will be limited. (ref: Inventory ) There's a spectacular amount of information on inventory limits on the wiki (see the link above). This includes information on... - Different backpack types for different activities - Limits of player housing storage, per housing type, and how it's upgraded - How banks work - How ...

No. You don't get buffs to Artisan skills from Combat classes. They're unrelated systems.

Yeah, but this is a new thing, which was added to the wiki after Steven announced it in the comments of the same video . You can't research things that are only announced in response to your own video. This is just pure proof that the discussion the video participates in did its job, and influenced the game (or at very least our information about it) in a positive way.

Nodes names

Post by SongRune on 2022-10-20 22:14:31

I find the question of "when can a node's name change?" far more interesting/concerning. Are we supposed to just learn and talk about one node for ages, then suddenly the official name changes, but some people are using the old one because they didn't know, some are using it because they don't care , another set is using it because they don't like the new name, and new (to the node) players are just getting confused, while the months long holy cold war continues and both sides get annoyed at each other, a new mayor is elected and changes ...

I was wondering about this, myself. If you don't get strong CC at all, obviously it was never a problem in the first place, but it's not like you're going to get abilities that are both high damage AND strong CC. That'd just be broken. But low damage, strong CC? That doesn't exactly give you bad odds on pulling off what the video describes. Sure your low damage strong CC move might manage to kill the guy, but it's not exactly likely unless the damage is good. It's basically a straight up catch-22.

Oof, that would be a disaster, in my personal opinion. But it would really take the forced PvP out of the game. Way easier for a Green to run away if a bunch of your big skills don't touch them. It'd basically be the end of ganking gatherers for materials.

You might need to review this handy graph. If Green attacks Red, they remain Green. And of course a reminder: There's no such thing as people just "being Purple" out in the wild. You turn Green when you haven't PvPed for like 90 seconds. "Green attacks Red" will apply to anyone who happens to see a Red walk by and wants a piece of that action.

Unable To CC NonCombatants?! What Does It All Mean?!

Post by SongRune on 2022-10-20 23:04:10

Definitely. You should absolutely get the damage half of your abilities, even if you don't get the CC effects. If for no other reason than that it would be a huge discouragement relative to choosing interesting CC effects to augment your damaging abilities. I don't want to see that limited (or even soft-limited) build choice in Ashes of Creation. Even without considering that, it quickly becomes worse to balance for, and the last thing I want to see is the devs throwing their hands up and just saying "It's easier to put damage and CC on entirely separate abilities". ...

Nope Bounty Hunters are people who sign up for a special "Bounty Hunter" flag in a military node. When THEY fight Reds they are effectively Purple, and the Reds may not experience the usual stat penalties. It's an opt-in state, though. There are quests and everything. It's an entirely separate system. A normal Green in the field isn't going to be a Bounty Hunter, and no action you can take out in the field can turn you into one. It's a profession of its own. EDIT: Apparently the Bounty Hunter flag only even lasts for an hour in the ...

Post by SongRune on 2022-10-20 23:15:39

There is explicitly no way to pickpocket other players. If you want someone's stuff you have to kill them. (ref: The wiki page on Theft ) I haven't heard anything about stealing other items. There will be a Thieves Guild, and it will have various quests and related activities though, so we'll see...

Really? "Based on the clear statements of design intent this game, as it is now, is not for me." Is that that weird? Sure they can completely change what kind of game they're building. Sure they can decide to go back on core gameplay elements. But if they're clear about what they're going to build, and you don't like THAT? Why the hell would you go "Oh, well maybe this time I WILL like these things I always hate"? I get "not being sure of the details", but those people aren't talking about the DETAILS. I mean, this would work if players were seriously invested in their characters, and their economic progression during an Alpha. Without those factors (not remotely present in Alpha 1, for certain), Corruption won't be treated the same as it would in release by a large enough number of players to make it matter. When you can create a new character, or expect yet more wipes. When you know your new character will just get set to max level for the next siege test, and when there's nothing long-term to DO with your money anyway, the reasons NOT to go ...

My first calculation was based on 1 bit per player, assuming unique server-relative player IDs could be sent at runtime. This is the smallest possible uncompressed non-sparse representation, which is what Strevi's "calculation" seemed to be "asking for". As you note, nobody would use a non-sparse representation for this sort of thing. I therefore adjusted my calculation to a sparse storage of 32bit unique account IDs, which is a reasonable basis for player identification. You can get a list of 1500 of those for just 6 KB. You could use a relational database, but the OVERHEAD involved would be ...

Nah, he's not the only one. Mostly, the people who point it out don't do so all that often. Anyone can go look at the Intrepid "Careers" page, and see that same "Senior Systems Designer" posting that's been up since Jeff Bard left over a year ago. Jeff was on every livestream. We haven't even heard the name of a replacement. There's been a lot of "Still hiring people! Please apply! Tell your friends to apply!", though. There's really no insider knowledge required.
