I didn't have trouble filling up most of my hotbar in Alpha 1, and we only got to play up to Level 15 at that time (out of 50). I'll have to recheck yesterday's livestream but I believe Steven said that classes will have around 30 abilities, though it won't be possible to spec into all of them at once. In Alpha 1, there were occasional items with "ability effects" (such as 'burn a particular sort of undead') which could also add to this.

This is a good way of making recipes manual, but doesn't really make crafting manual. One requirement I would say that you 'missed' is the requirement for RNG, which players then have ways to adapt to in the process. This allows RNG to keep things interesting without forcing a player to just automatically fail due to chance. With this, crafting can include personal style and risk/reward choice. (One RNG fail isnt a problem, but two is worse. Should I bother to mitigate the one I just got, or bet that I'll finish before a second? Do I prefer to ...

I always forget people come from games where you get RNG stats from your crafting. My concept is for success or failure only. I don't mind the opportunity for rare "high quality success" with fixed stats, but I hate the idea of gradient RNG stats for exactly the reason you describe. At that point why bother having anything other than the basic "put X Y and Z ingredients in" recipe? You're only making the tedium start from the very beginning for all but the pioneers of a craft. As much as I agree that many won't share their good ...

A lot of big names have Bard classes. Square-Enix, for instance. FFXI ( bard , housing , housing related buffs ) and FFXIV ( bard , housing ) both have both of these things, and FFXIV has 27 million players . BDO, too, has both housing and bards (though they have a different name (search "Awakening")), but then, BDO has a lot of unusual class names. It looks like Bards can also be found in Lineage 2 , and you can get housing in ArcheAge , as well. I certainly accept that a lot of games don't have a ...

It sounded to me like he explained the same system they use for Caravans, with an Attack/Defend style pop-up in that moment. I've been wondering about this too. A slip up after talking about Caravans for so long, perhaps? Or some kind of system where you have to opt into the area to actually loot or defend from looters? It seems like that could get convoluted. Hoping they clarify.

How do you choose which? I am interested in carpentry, because I am interested in carpentry irl. If I had a shaky hand or other sort of accessibility problem (possibly even from an accident in the shop), what do I do if you chose carpentry for a dex check specifically? The problem with this mindset is people have preferences and personal identity. Some people may go into a game like this going "eh, I'll craft whatever's profitable or easy". Everyone I know goes in thinking "I am going to go into these specific crafts because I like farming/cooking/carpentry/mining/etc". If ...

There's no chance Bards wont have instruments to play, but I think it would be nice to hear my character's voice when singing some of them. No words please, I feel like that would get very tedious over time, but well-written wordless singing has worked well in other games, even in repetitive situations. For calling out abilities... I think I'd prefer it be kept to "Ultimate" style attacks. Anything else would become a cacophony in a raid or even party setting in even moderately paced combat. It would potentially be a useful audio cue for "Ultimates" though. (I admit ...

A lot of what they're looking for, particularly in these pre-alpha spot tests is specifically not general feedback. It's bug reports. Basically ONLY bug reports. They'll get tons of feedback from the general Alpha, so unless something is a major issue, they probably don't care. Bugs though, bugs prevent them from having a proper Alpha and getting the overall feedback they need from it. That's what they're after here. I'm sure they appreciate feedback for final tuning, too, but I wouldn't bet that it's their primary target. I know you didn't say anything specifically about the spot tests, but ...

Yes. Less than a week if one of the absolute highest tier, most powerful nodes on the server falls. Half that for a normal one. Of course, Steven mentioned opt-in in the same answer, so... It's slightly unclear, but you shouldn't assume it won't happen.

No disagreement on the rest but this part is bad design. There's not necessarily a good way to know in advance what node someone is from, particularly if you're both abroad. There are also enough situations where you might need to fight a fellow node member after going red for another reason.

Ah. For my part, I simply don't trust it. The point of corruption is to allow ganking of gatherers, etc, to steal their resources. If they happened to have a friend from your own node that then jumps in to take revenge, it'd break the system a bit to give you uncleansable PK count for defending yourself at that point. I also don't believe that 'node camaraderie' is going to convince even the majority of players to not try to take you out in that case. Particularly if they're a bounty hunter generally. There's enough people on these forums ...

Neither was Open Seas PvP. People have gotten it out of their system, and this one's a much smaller instance due to being time limited, preventable, and relatively rare. There are plenty of people who are concerned about deviations from the previously stated intentions, and we saw a lot of evidence of this last month. That said... they've said over and over "everything is subject to change", and there's no reason for the design not to evolve as long as it stays relatively consistent with the same overall vision. Even something as large is this is, on some level, ...

Maybe that's the misunderstanding then? (ref: Artisan classes ) With at least 9 Processing professions, 8 Crafting professions, and 5 Gathering professions, you'd need no less than 8 characters (if they choose 3 subspecialties) or 12 (if they choose 2). There probably won't be 12 character slots per account.

There will be players who do this in any situation. Even if they need multiple accounts to do so. While this may be additional discouragement to some, it will not be to others, and in fact tends more toward pay to win. The current system prevents pay to win by allowing players to use their alts for this. Some players will choose to do this, and they should be allowed to. The time they invest in it is time they could spend doing something else that they prefer, make money from that, and pay for whatever else. That 98% ...

People don't say that minigames will make things easier for bots. They are saying that specific minigames make things easy (not 'easier') for bots. A lot of things that are hard for humans are easy for bots. Many (but not all) things that are easy for humans are also easy for bots. If you pick the wrong minigames, it doesn't help prevent bots. But it can discourage humans and make "using a bot" more attractive than doing it yourself. End result? More bots. Here's an example. He's right that minigames can keep bots from leveling professions, but the thing ...

The purpose of this type of design is to increase the investment required, and make it something that you have to specifically go out of your way to do. This type of barrier to entry allows the developers to limit the type of player who isn't interested in bringing up a whole series of alts just for crafting (which will be most players) to only mastering a certain number of crafts. This limits a specific anti-social behavior. It is good for the type of player who really likes crafting to have many alts and master many crafts. It is ...

Additional freeholds are likely to grant additional in-game currency by giving you access to more money-making activities and 'tools' than you can fit in a single freehold. Many people rightfully consider things that multiply economic power, such as "faster crafting" or "more farm spaces" as pay to win. A reasonable argument can be made for also including increased economic adaptability due to the additional opportunities for profit that are available if you are able to nimbly react to economic shifts.

Is THAT what he meant? I'll have to rewatch it... EDIT: Ah. So it is. He learned that he needs to say the words 'opt in zone' when describing corruption-free PvP regions. It was in fact clear. He was just also trying to trick a specific set of people, and I was confused in retrospect by it. So it is in fact: "Opt-in zone": Zone which you opt into by entering. not: "Opt-in zone": Zone where the PvP 'mode' is "opt-in". Ultimately, given what node ruins are, it really should be the first. There's no actual reason to enter ...

. Does this limit them from being alts in any way OTHER than what you just described?
Post by SongRune on 2022-10-18 15:13:00
Ew. Don't make alts "all the same person". They have different lives and different skillsets. What even is the point of alternate characters without that? Is "all your alts are Cleric because your main is" next?

The reason this is done is because it produces the least disruption possible. The more you change, the more likely you are to mess up other parts of the balance, or forget to change things without realizing it. The best answer from the perspective of a single player of a class might feel like "buff instead of nerf", but the best answer from the perspective of the health of the game is always to make the smallest possible change that will resolve the problem. "Mage Teleport now has +2 second cooldown and covers 5% less distance" is far healthier ...

I've seen you say this a couple times now. I thought you should know that it's not true. Multi-boxing is specifically allowed. (ref: Multi-boxing ) (And a community poll a few days later reinforced Steven's decision by a nearly 20% margin.)
Post by SongRune on 2022-10-19 03:27:21
Healing may be supporting, but supporting isn't automatically healing. As a Bard, I expect to do relatively little healing, and a LOT of buffing. I should have some regen, but no burst heals. I should have status resistance buffs, but not cleansing abilities. My focus will be on helping my party adapt to the challenges they face, amplifying synergies and covering gaps relative to varying content. Healing is my Cleric's job. If I have to spend my time on that, nobody's doing my job. So if you'll excuse me, I'll be busy reducing the need for healing in the ...

Nothing. If you want to spend the money for different accounts, multi-boxing is explicitly allowed, as long as you don't use extra macros/tools as well. You could log out for a while, get your other account to the spot, and kill yourself, if you really wanted.

Yeah, see. This is exactly the sort of mindset that drives away a certain subset of player that might otherwise be able to ease into it. This whole "It's supposed to be painful and unfun, and you're supposed to just deal with that." People without experiences that show them the value in this sort of gameplay then go "But why?" and leave. The PvP you're talking about may not even need to be painful or un-fun, but when you have this kind of reaction, you make sure they'll never find that out. It's very unproductive.

To clarify something... Are you asking for access to the thematics of a Secondary Archetype, with no mechanical changes? (or would you be satisfied by that) Or are you specifically asking for immediate access to additional mechanics?
Post by SongRune on 2022-10-19 17:10:55
I see. A lot of the people in this thread are responding to you as if you are asking for mechanical changes or early access to class abilities. I don't have as much of a problem with this personally, but I expect many people will say it's relatively pointless from a dev effort perspective. The more legitimate argument is that it will be confusing to new players who think that "this is all there is to secondary archetypes", particularly when they are told explicitly that they will never grant new abilities. In this way, granting your request is dangerous ...

The more relevant consideration is not that it is a representation of what you've achieved, but that gear is a representation of what your build style is. Obviously "plate vs cloth" will still be obvious, but in games where there are certain stylistic choices (from an art perspective) based on what types of stats a gear piece focuses on, or where higher level gear pieces are visually unique enough to be recognizable, even if they're not "legendary" or otherwise special, you get a much clearer idea of what your opponent is built for, that I'm not sure the "gear ...

Well, it's never been about Dygz. It's about all the silent people who have similar perspectives and don't post them here. Dygz knows about corruption, he knows how all these systems work. He has legitimate reasons that he personally doesn't like Steven's new direction. No-one here is gonna drive away Dygz. Steven already did that, and you know what? That's fine. Personally, I'm glad Steven is clarifying his target audience rather than stringing along people who don't fit. If he started a discussion about Corruption, sure. If he had made arguments about how it's a small temporary thing and ...
