Yeah, that wind effect was sprinting (which had a stamina limit). I never noticed myself running at a different speed than any of my friends.

I'm wary about adding 'yet another' type of buff to the game, since this sort of thing quickly becomes 'required', but I can see this sort of mechanic working really well for food buffs. Having a campfire sort of thing like this that lets you share a meal (or as a cook, possibly prepare or customize one) with your party when you're out in the wilderness away from a tavern, might be kindof nice.

I don't fish for money, I fish to fish. When I'm fishing, it's because that's a point in time where I'm not off PvPing. For a reason, presumably. Moods shift. You could take this as saying I don't want to ever be ganked while fishing, but that's not exactly true. It's just a thing that happens. It's annoying, but so it goes. But if most of the risk is on the fisher, and little on the attacker, I'm going to get ganked OFTEN. So I just won't fish. It's not that there won't be fish on the market. It's ...

My attackers don't know I'm playing catch & release. I'll get killed just as often, take the XP Debt just as often, and get nothing in return but a trip back from some spawnpoint every damn time. My alt can't get to the places with the interesting fish. Easy fish get boring fast. Interesting/challenging fish tend to be the high level ones (and therefore most valuable to gankers), and they tend to be found in harder to reach places.

What, another one?
Post by SongRune on 2022-09-24 15:54:47
Wait, how much stuff do I need in my inventory to count as "Gatherer" when I'm ganking folks? Or is it just profession level?

As a Bard/Rogue, I'm not interested in being forced to play as a cleansing healer. I doubt my Summoner is interested in being forced to always summon with a healing/cleansing focus either. I'm all about the buffs, and even status resistances, but if I want to cleanse things I'll go Secondary Archetype: Cleric. Don't force me to act like "/Cleric" because my Cleric literally can't.

So Champion & Defender of particular cause and belief vs Lore Master? They seem fine to me. That isn't to say that they couldn't be better, but what do you suggest?

A lot of people agree with you on this one. Sadly, I think the last we've heard is still that all buildings will use the racial appearance from the last levelup. The problem with this, is that it's double-edged. If someone is moving in to attack you , you have no idea whether you should run or fight back. It would make gatherers have to think twice before trying to defend themselves or their spot (and maybe lose their work so far), and make that risk calculation much harder than the other side's "eh, I'm a PvPer with an ...

I have now watched the video. There's some problems here. 1. If we have two greens (anyone who isn't red and hasn't hit a player in the last 90 seconds), and they want to have a fully agreed-upon and willing duel... Both flag so they can hit each other. Green1 hits Green2. Green1 is now Purple1. Green2 fights back and becomes... Green2. The only person 'allowed' to win a duel they both agreed to is Green2. There's no fully willing and intentional (on both sides) PvP configuration that doesn't guarantee corruption for one of the participants should they win. ...

Keep on it! If we keep them aware that the community is interested, they'll have it in mind in case they get further into the node appearance design and realize it's more practical than they thought. While I agree that this might be more thrilling or add intrigue in some circumstances, it will have a strong chilling effect on PvP (in part because said gatherers will be more or less required to always run, just in case). I'm not sure that's healthy for AoC, but I do see your perspective. I don't perceive that people will spend a lot ...

(ref: Legendary Items ) There's already a plan for something like this.

Then the system is working perfectly. The purpose of the corruption system is to encourage players to fight back more, and to PvP more. It's there to discourage serial ganking only. That's why you have to pay an extra price (higher green death penalties) to put a bounty on your attacker's head. You're only intended to do this if they're enough of a troublemaker that it's worth that to you, not just if you don't feel like being killed right now. By your own statements, the system is working as intended. Whether you agree with that intent is obviously ...

While I am not a Ranger/*, I am interested in Bard/Ranger, and considering that option. The main source of my hesitation is that I don't know if Ashes will allow me to actually use a bow properly. I need a 1-3 second charged shot option for it to feel natural to me. The Longbow shown, and the Sniper Shot ability sound great to me, but I'm concerned that as these are Ranger abilities, rather than "longbow" abilities, they may not be available to me as a */Ranger. I am interested in focus and targeting, not simply being a auto-shot ...

Even if you can swim across the ocean, there'll still be a good case for single-player boats and aquatic mounts. Swimming is slow . In Alpha 1 I was miserable when I accidentally dismissed my aquatic mount mid-ocean (you couldn't summon them (or use any other action) while swimming in that build). If it's something you intend to do more than occasionally, you're going to want something faster, or which has some carrying capacity of its own. Not to mention that it's a lot easier to fish while sitting on the deck of a boat than while treading water. ...

Punny quest titles are great. No opinion on 'pop culture', but anything too 'modern' (and particularly anything political) risks hitting weirdly for portions of your audience. I like "Theseus" (because the name is cool on its own as well), "It's a me!" (when the quest only lightly hints of a Mario reference), and "I'll be Bach" (if the quest is related to music, not Terminator), but "Make love, not Ashes" should be a reference to the age old saying, not a TV episode that itself referenced that saying. The key to this sort of thing is to make it ...

You're so used to seeing images of the sun that way though. The hazy aura can be attributed to mist of some form, but those pentagonal splotches mid-screen have no other explanation. As for the OP, I agree. If nothing else, because it ruins the visibility of a gorgeous world (and situational awareness, as well).

I agree. Just do it the way it works for human eyes, instead of the way it works for video camera lenses. Get rid of lens flare.

The problem wouldn't be with displaying your characters on the website, it would be with porting the character creator itself to the web, and making sure it worked. That's dev time that's not necessarily well spent. If you're okay with a desktop app, that might be something they'll provide. In that case, you'll be able to screenshot and share on your own. There'll probably be forum threads for that the moment the creator releases.

This quickly becomes an action economy question. Even if you go from 1 summon at 100% power to 10 summons at 10% power, I still have to focus on each one to kill them. I no longer have enough time or focus to deal with anything else going on in the battle. Beyond that, I can no longer use a big ability to take off a large chunk of your summon's health. In this case, it'd one-shot one of them, rather than taking 30% off the single summon. Depending on class, this starts causing me cooldown or resource trouble. ...

@Hashtarr , What's your concept of the "killed by a Bard" animation? Is it different if I kill with my Longbow instead of my Straight Sword?

One thing I hated more than anything else about gathering in BDO was that some trees were choppable, and some weren't, and there was no logic to it. You had to run up to each of one of many nearly identical trees in a zone. "Is this one choppable? No. How about the identical tree next to it. Yes!" There's no value to actively thwarting a player's intuition on this front. At the same time, allowing every tree in the world (even of a given type) to be chopped is insane and unworkable from a resource scarcity perspective. The ...

To be clear: This is exactly what BDO has, and exactly what I'm complaining about. You can tell it's harvestable when you run up next to it and the "Gather" button appears (or doesn't). But which 10 of the hundred trees in this field should I run up to next? "Good luck!"

I mean, making one of these monthly cosmetic packs we have been seeing probably takes one or two artists a week at most, and almost certainly pays those artists salaries (or more) for the whole month. I think, overall, that's a net positive for "content development budget".

Did you SEE the EPIC dash ability during the melee combat demo stream (before this last one)? Fighter isn't the class I'm worried about. More seriously, how will Cleric stack up?

Node advancement, guild conflict, empire expansion, claiming or holding their Castle. That's the intent for Ashes, anyway.
Post by SongRune on 2022-10-01 21:42:02
It's not immersive or realistic. There's no way you don't normally know when you go to chop a tree if it's at least useful for lumber or not. Sure you hit a dud sometimes, but if you have any idea what you're looking at you have way more hits than misses. I personally still somewhat dislike it as a gameplay mechanic, even if it technically solves the problem. "Okay, okay, fine. I won't make you guess which tree in this field you can chop. Now you can chop all of them! But still only 10 of them are real. ...

Agreed. They definitely shouldn't. It needs to be sun glare, though, not lens flare (which refers to a style of visual effect, not a level of intensity). Lens flare and sun glare are different things! So far nobody in this thread has actually disagreed. Everyone who's meant "lens flare" has wanted it gone. Everyone who's meant "sun glare" has wanted to keep it. Gotta keep in mind that they aren't the same thing. Sun glare, no lens flare. Thanks Intrepid!

Yes. You drop items when you die to NPCs (as of Alpha 1, certainly). NPCs don't loot your body though, so if you get back in time, you might be able to grab it. If you can get to your ashes safely, based on where you were fighting.
