What is your MMO PvE experience like?

But sometimes people don't get the message even if you outfarm them. And while it doesn't necessarily prevent me from farming, I do find presence of other people in my farming room annoying, so having the opportunity to remove someone from the premises is great. And I'm completely fine with someone else trying to do the same to me if they feel the same way.

They don't even need to keep farming that place. They just needed to remove you from that location. And unless this was happening in an open field and you saw that the friends left, or if you were after those particular mobs' drop and will keep coming back to that exact location - friends coming there and removing you would achieve the same goal as they would've in pvp. Except with pvp on top of pve (in an RPS system) you have more variables. A warrior might be slow at farming than a mage, but he could be the ...

I'm not a WoW player, but I thought people just cleared its story and were mainly done with the game until the next expansion (same with ff14 afaik), while L2 people play on older updates exactly because we couldn't give 2 shits about the story, but we care about the social/pvp part of the game and that part is way better on the earlier versions. So unless I'm missing smth, these 2 are quite different reasonings.

I implore the devs to work on archetypes and classes before it's too late.

It's so interesting proving my L2 bias by hearing that bards and summoners are less generic, when L2 had like 5 bards and ~5 summoners, with some of them being partly mages or healers or tanks.

I feel like your EQ bias is showing, cause I don't think any other game is giving their players as much content as EQ(2) does/did. FF14 and WoW are considered the hugest PvE-based content mmos. Both of those take quite a while in-between their content updates. GW2 is also a pve content game and afaik that shit takes even longer (correct me if I'm wrong, those who know). I think ESO is the same? What other big name pve mmos are out there that have insane content update pace? And I wasn't even saying that the whole genre is ...

It shows the bias in the context of the argument. You're enamored with EQ (understandably so) and think that a lot of other games do thinks like they do, but from what I've heard - they don't. So your example of "just constantly add a ton of content into the game" is not as widespread as you want it to be. Yeah, which just proves that EQ is an outlier for one reason or the other. If other games can't keep making a shitton of content for their game, while EQ's team can - there's gotta be a reason ...

I'm glad to know there's more examples of this kind of content output. To me this only means that Ashes has more chances at succeeding, and at the end of the day that's the only thing I want. Hope it all works out and we can enjoy a great mmo for many years to come.

Shirtless armor

Ya better not make this pve-server exclusive! I'd love to be a shirtless dunir running in the frosty mountains, but I ain't doing that on a pve server!

Here's a good video that discusses why everyone who played older mmos love them so much, and imo this video supports the idea of limiting pvp to higher lvls. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4Gaz8oxzJ4 Let the people enjoy the easier part of the game first and then impose difficulties on those who want to get even more enjoyment out of it. And if designed properly, you can hook more people in with a "you remember that one boss at lvl 10 that was fun and cool? Well here's an even cooler boss, but this time you'll have to work more to beat it ...

About mandatory PvP.

A few months back (or maybe weeks? what is time?) I suggested an addition to the BH system where the PK's victim's resources would have a higher chance of dropping and would be marked with the owner's name, and the BH system itself would reward the bounty hunters for returning those resources back to the owner. I feel like this could alleviate the "loser never gets anything" problem. I also bundled up that suggestion with another addition to the system, but that one will only become relevant after we see what Intrepid has designed on their own first.

But I think that's at the core of Azherae's question. Is there a deeper reason to having nuts in your brownies than just "I like/want it that way"? Maybe, for whatever reason, nut allergies in the region have spiked and now your "brownies with nuts" shop can't sustain itself because you don't have enough customers, even though 10 years ago a similar shop was booming and made a ton of money and you yourself enjoyed it a lot. If the reason is only your desire to do it then you should be prepared to fail. And fail not only ...

But the whole point of "having a thousand flavors" is that they mostly come from the same company Yes, there's a few different sources, but from what I've seen, they're usually under some mega conglomerate that bankrolls them w/o any problems. That was the case with pretty much all big mmos of today. They were either riding the coattails of a long-standing franchise or came from a huuuuge studio, or even both. Ashes has none of that and doesn't have investors to prop it up in the case it fails at the start (i.e. NW), but that's obviously why ...

If you're fine with failing, definitely no. Hope that doesn't happen and the potential of failure doesn't spook Steven/Intrepid from being what they want to be, but we'll have to see.

And even my definition is what's good in the context of what Ashes wants to be is layered with a ton of bias towards a pvp-centric mmo. And that kind of design allegedly died more than 10 years ago, so all that I'm trying to do with my suggestions/thought process is to find a way to merge that design with what potentially might attract people who've never experienced its "good" parts. And even those good parts are usually seen as something completely undesired by a lot of people I hope for the best for Ashes, while expecting some very ...

We need PVE servers here's why

Post by Ludullu on 2022-06-23 21:01:04

I have a slight problem with this line of thinking, mainly based on my infamous bias for L2 The only difference between L2's karma system and AoC's corruption system is the resources that drop on death. Yes, there's also the stat dampening for Red players, but that's a change for such extreme cases that we can disregard that for now. We've yet to see exactly how much stuff we drop on death, so it's difficult to say how much desire there'll be in people to kill another player for their resources (and that's even considering that you'd know which ...

Also, as an addendum, if we do in fact have "50% of resources lost on death" - the game will be way more hardcore than even the owpvp would imply, especially considering that Steven wants pve to be at least somewhat challenging and not just a walk in a park.

From what I've heard the issue is not the absence of punishment for the criminal, but the loss of resources/time itself on the side of the casual getting killed. They don't care that they might not get kileld by the same person later on because they already got killed by them just now.

True, and I did go quite a bit into the woods with that comment, but it's mainly because I usually see that phrase from the people that haven't even heard of L2 (outside of maybe Steven mentioning it), so they have 0 concept of how this kind of flagging system can even operate. And the only thing they see is "omg I can be killed in the open world! That sounds like that one time when a horde char killed me while I was picking flowers and it made me quit WoW! If Ashes keeps this system - IT'S ...

Guild/node should be tied to accounts

Post by Ludullu on 2022-06-24 19:34:33

Pretty much what Prophet and Dygz already said. Spying is intended and the node citizenship is already account-wide and not character-specific. Also, if my guild is in a guild war and I might not be in the mood to die a few hundred times that day, I'd prefer to have my alt be off-guild to still enjoy the game. Even the hardcore pvpers like to be free sometimes.

Guild/node should be tied to accounts

Post by Ludullu on 2022-06-24 19:47:03

As been stated several times, node are account-wide so that's not an issue. As for the guild thing. I'm not hiding from it, I'm taking a break. And having played L2 and having been in countless wars, just "going somewhere where there isn't war" isn't quite an option. Especially if you're in a big/strong guild. Also, in order to get into a guild that's worth spying on, your alt would have to put in work either way. no self-respecting guild will just invite any rando off the street, so you'll have to work twice as hard to set up ...

Health of the guild system comes from the guilds themselves. You think someone's an alt char in your guild? Talk to them about their investment into your guild. If they can't provide as much as you want from them - kick them.

Guild/node should be tied to accounts

Post by Ludullu on 2022-06-24 23:10:31

And a small guild that doesn't care about being super strict about their memebers won't care that one of their members doesn't play 10h every day. And they won't be spied on because they're just a small/casual guild. What would happen though is the owner of that alt can just relax with another group of people w/o worrying about constantly doing smth beneficial to the guild. And those who care about spying, can still do so. In other words, you're limiting player choice while not providing any benefits with this change. What it would provide though is more toxicity ...

Guild/node should be tied to accounts

Post by Ludullu on 2022-06-24 23:28:26

Except I can tell them that I can't play rn. And if my alts are not in the guild, they wouldn't know that I'm playing. But even outside of that point, you're still forcing people into smth they might not want. And while with node citizenship it's somewhat understandable because there's a ton of mechanics and benefits related to it, forcing people to have all of their alts in the same guild doesn't serve any real purpose outside of just limiting people's choice.

I don't even care about this shit. I just want to have a non-guilded alt. Why the hell must I be tied to my guild even on my other characters?

Class Discussion for ShadowLORD

I'm used to rogues being dagger-wielding backstabbing bois who can detarget an enemy. I'd love for the summoner's augments to let Rogues do the same things easier. Maybe one ability summons their clone that triggers Rogue's backstabbing passives by hitting the victim in the back for some period of time, even if the rogue is not at the target's back. Some augments could create copies around the target and use foe abilities to try and confuse the victim. Some augments could continuously detarget the victim (remove their tab targetting), though this kind of power would have to be limited ...

Maybe I misunderstood him. I'd be way laxer on my opposition to this suggestion if that's the case. Even though my opinion on it doesn't matter at all, cause Steven already said how it's gonna be.
