Cosmetic Shop is P2W

I see your point, but how often would this kind of situation happen exactly in relation to some particular store cosmetic. I guess I should've made that more explicit in that post. I understand how and why the story might require a very specific look from a participant. But I'm not sure whether AoC's cosmetic store will have such an incredible and unique variety of items that the situation your described in your original post would happen often enough for it to be statistically significant. And if you do think this might happen often enough, could you tell me ...

Mag, the main point of Azherae's example was that there are in fact cases where cosmetic stores can be seen as p2w. They can be seen as p2w within the gameplay style of the people in said example. Those people are a minority (imo a real small one, relatively speaking), but for their gameplay the store is indeed p2w. And as Iridianny herself said, she doesn't see "a potion that'll give you max lvl" as p2w, while to any self-respecting hardcore player that would be blasphemous. It's a matter of povs. And as for the example itself, as Azherae ...

Yes, I agree with this. I definitely hope Intrepid doesn't go down this route, but the possibility is definitely there. I'd personally prefer if Intrepid went down the path of "you can get a particularly-looking cosmetic really easily, but if you put in a lot of work, there's gonna be way more intricacies and coloring options added to a very similar version of that cosmetic". Would this kind of approach seem fair to you and would it potentially diminish or completely remove the potential p2wness of the store?

I understood where you were coming from, but not the reason why, because even after asking you for an example multiple times I still didn't get a single one, while Azherae managed to present a concrete and direct example of the thing that made me understand why an RPer would see the shop as p2w. But imo it was definitely not a simplification. I'd say it was quite the opposite.

I'd mainly chuck it up to the problems that would arise if multiboxing was seen as direct p2w. If people start yelling at Intrepid to somehow limit multi-pc-multiboxing, Intrepid would have to either take the reputation hit (though I doubt it'd be big) or a potential lawsuit from some big american family that has 5 people all leaving in one house and wanting to play the game together, but not able to because Intrepid listened to the yelling and blocked multiple PC on one network from accessing the game. It's a slippery slope of sorts. Or at least that's ...

Yeah, this is why I found it quite hypocritical when Iridianny said that "being able to buy additional char slots is not p2w", while asking to see her pov as a valid argument for why the cosmetics store is p2w. If I have the same amount of time to play the game as another nerd and we're both willing to grind the game enough to level up several artisans in different branches, but he can buy more char slots and do more stuff with them - to me, that's directly p2w. Multiboxing falls under the same concept, except I'm ...

At this point I feel like you just lack imagination to get this point Just imaaagine that the situation Azherae presented is possible and mayhaps perchance has even happened to someone before. Yes, it might be super rare in this particular context, but just the possibility itself justifies calling the store p2w, even if purely in the eyes of the person who was affected by the presented situation.

Yeah, freehold skins are such a huge question right now. And the longer Intrepid waits to explain how exactly the skins work, the more potential problems they'll have when people start realizing that they probably wasted a few hundos on a useless pixelclump.

I mean, as I said several times already, I do think that kind of interaction in this particular context would be rare. But the latest Azherae post does present another situation where one person would lose out on participating in RP due to the situation she described in the post. And if someone loses, that means that someone won and in that case the winner got the win because of a bought cosmetic. And as for "don't play with shitty people", that's a very difficult subject, especially when you're talking about peak performance in your preferred gameplay. I've played ...

This would just lead to 0 high lvl market trading. All the hardcore players who can level all the professions to the max will then be able to do everything themselves and will no longer require the help of other people. And considering that high lvl crafting will still need low level resources, if high lvls can get all those resources themselves (and probably even faster/better) - there's no need to trade with low lvl players who're trying to sell their stuff. At least I know that I'd do exactly that if I could max out every artisan profession. ...

In theory, any node would have ~100-300 citizens (depending on the node's lvl). If we assume that even just a third will already have a guild and their own group (I'd personally assume it'd be more because of how ow dungeons work), that's leave 70-200 people who might be up for some farm. Now if we account for all the casuals/non-mobpve people, I'd think we could cut another half from that number. So at most we'd have around 100 people actively looking for a party during prime time within any given node. And that's barely over 10 parties, so ...

Dungeons/locations can change with the changes of the node that controls them. So in theory, Intrepid could do a world event triggered by a node lvl up where this King appears (or resurrects or whatever, I dunno the lore) and sieges the node or just causes havoc around the node by growing his influence on the region. Though I don't think if anything of this exact kind of event has been talked about before. Here's more info on the world events if you're interested. https://ashesofcreation.wiki/Events P.S. I suggest diving into the wiki as a whole and trying to find ...

And it's on Intrepid to design the game in such a way that you have your hands full with other stuff and simply don't have the time to level up all the other artisan professions. I'm not sure if they'll succeed in this, but they alleged that they wanna at least try. And as for alts and stuff. I personally like when I'm known for a particular action/skill/deed in my community. If I'm the best crafter around, everyone will point at me when asked "who can craft this thing for me?". But if I can do literally everything, then ...

Thanks to Jahlon's clarification of this on discord I wanna hear forum people's opinions on this design choice. For me this is literally the best news I've heard about Ashes in the past 2 years of me following the game. This literally makes the game L3 for me. But what is yall's take on this? Do you think this would push people away from joining guilds? Do you think this could lead to very bad experiences for casual players whose Mayor decided to declare a war on a stronger node?

I think it's over when you've done the task during prime-time, so quite likely it's a 1-2 day thing. Unless Intrepid go real hardcore and make the tasks so damn hard that it takes either side weeks to complete it. For guild wars there's a way to surrender, though I think there's some cost to it too (as well as declaration), so it won't be just a "dec whoever you want at any moment w/o any price on your side". For nodes though, it seems as if Mayors can just declare them. Or at least I don't think we've ...

I meaaaan, for the goal of the game, the best approach would be to just restrict anyone to only 1 char per account (ideally with a full multi-pc ban). Because this way you'd really push people to join the community and rely on each other. But obviously that'll never happen cause people would go crazy if they couldn't make an alt. But if intrepid paces their artisan leveling and expansion release properly, and adds content related to all artisan branches in a meaningful way - then we'll have no real problems. But obviously that's a very difficult thing to ...

I'd say purely in this context, it'd be someone who just wants to do their non-pvx activity (of which there are many). One could argue that the whole premise of the game is that pretty much every activity in the game is pvx, but at that point we have a game with 0 appeal to casuals, cause a mad Mayor could always fuck up that casual's entire livelihood. And the Mayor in question could be on either side of the war too, so it's not like you could easily vote him out.

We'd have to see how nodes and guilds work out in practice in Ashes. The world is supposed to be huge and house upwards of 10k active players, so unless some guild has several thousand members (I'm sure there's at least a few of those out there) - I'm not sure if there could be "peace" on any given server. But even if there is such a guild, EVE history has shown that even such guilds can crumble under their own weight. I would definitely like a world-sprawling mob event that lasts weeks of real time, but I'd personally ...

DPS Meter Megathread

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-06 22:03:46

I feel like this is the core of the issue. If those players from your example didn't see that the healer died and that they were getting heals from another person (namely the SP), then either they're just bad players with no awareness of their surroundings and the greater raid or, as you said, they're just too stupid for the content itself. At which point I'm even surprised they could clear it in the first place. Looking at your dps is fun and all, but, imo, if that action prevents you from knowing what the fuck is going on ...

Even equal Lvl 3 nodes can still be neighbors (or very close to each other) even if they're vassals of different metropoli, due to how nodes can grow and weird shapes of other nodes around them. The simulation of nodes video showed a few lvl4 nodes directly next to lvl3 nodes, but they were vassals of different higher lvl nodes. And telling PvE nodes from their preferred lands or from a land where they have a ton of good reputation and their own corner of the market and a good farming system setup could definitely make some people stop ...

DPS Meter Megathread

@Noaani how would you look at an anonymous+personal tracker? Every person just has the chat log of all the things they did during any given encounter (I mean they'll have it all the time, but maybe there could be a "recording" function where some duration of that log, set by you, could be recorded into a text file). And the boss itself would have give a UI window that shows all the skills/dmg done to it and all the abilities itself used throughout the fight (seconds by second report), but you would not know who used those skills, so ...

If Intrepid manage to balance their party design around their "one of each" goal, then, in theory, there'd be more healer/bard/tank/summoner classes just because they'd know that they're valued and would easily find a party. Obviously there'll be more dps classes just cause that is always the case, but with some proper augments you could substitute some missing class by having 2 members with the augments from said class. This way, I'd assume, there's gonna be a way easier time trying to party up with random people in Ashes than in most other mmos. Well, that is if Intrepid ...

DPS Meter Megathread

Uhm, I can restrict your right completely if I want to, even w/o the meters. That's where your server/node reputation would come in. If the party agreed to a certain set of rules before partying up and you then go against those rules - you're free to reap the consequences of such an action. I've had this exact interaction in L2 countless times. And anyone who fucked over one of the party members would the become fairly infamous within the farming circle of their lvl of progress. It's not like the meters are the only source of people being ...

24/7 pvp during guild/node wars

Post by Ludullu on 2022-08-07 18:56:48

I'm more interested if multiple nodes can all be in a war, either as a ffa or as Xv1. Definitely could see a cooldown being good for the system, but I also think the cost of declaring a war against a guild/node that's already in a war should be increased too (on top of all the prerequisite costs the declaration has). Maybe even a multiplier on the basic cost. Say a guild A of "power score 100" gets decced by a guild B with a 200 score. B guild would pay X amount of resource/money to dec guild A. ...

Prime-time is when you can end a war, because it'll have the tasks for you to do so. And fwiw L2's guild wars did still remove your xp on death (even if in a much smaller amount), so Ashes could in theory keep the death penalties same as flagged one or just a bit smaller.

My answer is 3, but the game will let you wear extravagant cosmetic costumes from lvl1, so if that puts you off - be warned.
