Oh, I'm sure that it was, but WoW was the thing that made mmos as popular as possible. Most mmos just copied its designs later on and/or tried to replicate its success w/o really knowing the real reasons for it.

The 15 bosses in question were the peak pve content that only the top 1% would be able to even attempt. There'd be a ton of weaker bosses in the game. High/top tier gear will most likely be quite rare. And that's kind of the point. Not everyone is a winner. Especially not the casual players who play 1h a day. There'll still be content for those players, but it won't be the peak difficulty content which provides you with that top tier gear. There's still a chance that those casuals will have hardcore friends who might share some ...

Not sure you can? At least I don't think I've heard about anything like that yet.

It looks amazing. I hope the land management system manages to control the overabundance of resources well enough. I'll remain skeptic about it until I see that system at work. Outside of that worry, everything looks great, especially considering early passes of sounds/visuals. The surveying will help out with knowing where to go and what to find, so that's great.

How many of those 8k people will be raiding at all? How many of the ones who will be raiding will be doing so daily? Of those who do so daily, how many can contest the farm through pvp? I'd assume that the final number after all of those barriers is somewhat small (relatively speaking that is). There's also the question of the time of day when those raiders will be online too. In other words, I do believe that the game won't need as many bosses as it might seem. Obviously Noaani disagrees with that, but we'll have ...

I know I've said this already, but really if you're against these kinds of mechanics - you're not the target audience. The game has death penalties, caravan attacks, node sieges, item decay and potential destruction, owpvp, supposedly hardcore pve, ffa pvp open seas where your ships can get destroyed and also guild wars that can go on for days with potentially hundreds if not thousands of deaths - literally all of those are "negative progression" mechanics. And the game is build around all of those mechanics and has them all interconnected, so the current design would have to drastically ...

I'd agree with Strevi's suggestion of reputation based mechanics and they could maybe tie into the Enemy of the State mechanic or Node War one. Maybe make it easier to declare both/either of those things if players of your node catch an "intruder" overfarming your stuff. And players should have a streamlined way to indicate such intruders to their mayor.
Post by Ludullu on 2022-10-28 19:41:57
Don't think we've heard about stuff like that. There'll most likely be gatherables deep in dungeons (and stuff that can be gathered from mobs of course), so you'll need to do that with your gatherers rather than crafters.

A failed caravan defense, especially if it was a solo one, is a x200 death penalty (and that's if you lose 50% of your stuff on green death). And even if you somehow managed to grab some of the dropped certificates, a portion of them just get sunk and disappear. So running a caravan means a potential of losing hoooours of progress. A failed node siege leads to the loss of citizenship (which is pretty much a money investment) and some portion of your goods because your freehold will get raided and the node bank will get emptied too ...

Don't see why not. I'm sure that if the game lacks such a feature, there's gonna be some 3rd party site that compiles all the info about boss/mob drops and provides users with a full checklist that they can go through. And I'd rather just have that kind of feature either in the game itself or at least in the companion phone app.

Doesn't take much organization to tell your big guild to "just go cut down trees in this node so that they can't make defenses for the siege" and then repeat the same thing to your nodemates so that the situation couldn't be resolved with a guild war. PKing dozens if not hundreds of people over and over and over again seems like character suicide rather than a logical solution to the attack on the node.
Post by Ludullu on 2022-10-28 21:47:07
Which is exactly why I think that node reputation linked with node wars and Enemy of the State mechanics would be a good solution. Those systems are already in place and you just need to make the combination process a bit more streamlined than it might already be and you have yourself a great way to counter an aggressive gathering action.
Post by Ludullu on 2022-10-28 22:14:02
I can definitely see how this system will be one of the main PK baits in the game, if there's no other way to counter aggressive gatherers.

Hell, the lvl1 gatherer meme would literally work now, because everyone can just make a quick alt and go chop trees. And ya ain't PKing those bois with your mains. So you'd have to go down the George route of making lvl5 dudes to PK those lvl1 dudes, except your alts will stat dampen to all hell pretty quickly, while the lvl1 gatherers couldn't care less because they can either make more alts or just keep cutting trees on the og alt, if XP debt doesn't influence artisan stuff (which I don't think it does in any way). This ...

Nah, I ain't getting myself unneeded XP debt on my main, f that. I'm making a lvl1 gatherer (or whichever will be the smallest lvl possible for this trick) and go fuck up some node's resources. EZ I sure as hell hope Intrepid has some solutions to this and Steven just forgot to mention those (or I might've missed them? gonna rewatch it later).

A guild decided to sunk a node. That node needs a ton of mats to prepare proper defenses. They need rocks and trees in huge amounts. The guild prepares everything for the siege scroll, then makes the minimum lvl alts to go farm out every tree and rock in that node, so that they don't respawn for some time. Depending on the size of the node and the guild, this might take one evening. The guild then uses the scroll and now the node citizens have to go to other nodes to get all of those resources. But all ...

Again, all it takes is literally one semi-big guild. You've played L2, you must know how guilds can be quite well-coordinated. Especially when the reward is nice. Deleveling a node will be one of the biggest rewards in the game, because it might be in the way of your node's progress. Spending one evening to completely fuck up some node's ecosystem is literally nothing to an even semi-coordinated big guild. They'll just make alts and go gather everything they see in the target node. The only thing that could stop this is a huge lvl gate on gathering resources, ...

The price is high because this will be a real testing environment. Servers will keep resetting, chars wiped, there's gonna be all the bugs and no balancing. Intrepid mainly wants people who realize that they paid the money either to purely support the development or to properly test the game. Even during alpha1 ($500) there were people that were doing dumb shit during testing, which Intrepid explicitly asked not to do. The lower the price the more such people will be present during testing.
Post by Ludullu on 2022-10-29 00:27:17
You can still contribute by watching streams (alpha2 will not be under nda) and giving your feedback from them.

For me it was mainly just the community around the game and the fact that I started playing it at an early age. Lineage 2 had roughly the same flagging system and had all kinds of griefing methods. But the community (at least the one I was a part of) just treated it like it is - just a game. There's literally no reason to get mad at a game. People might reply to that with "but they waste my time and I don't have much of that", to which I'd say "I was a 12y.o. who could only ...

And for me, even the $250 price equals ~1.5 months of minimum salary in my country. I'm lucky enough to have the money for it w/o having a job, but there's also Liniker on the forum who's in a guild that bought these packages at prices equivalent to 2 months-worth of salary. So while I get that we all want to test the game, I do agree with Steven's pov on this because the people who spent way more of their money (relatively speaking) will give so much more back to the game during testing than someone for whom ...

W/o concrete info to me that still sounds like a weak justification and hype-building. But no matter what it is, it definitely does point in a direction that could be interpreted in not the best of ways.

But that would mean that the whole community had roughly the same profile. And while that is a possibility and it might've just come down to the overall cultural features of the community, I do feel like Ashes would definitely appeal to a broader audience (at least if they deliver on most promises). But I get what you're saying. And Steven hopes that his changes will limit griefing to a big extent and anything on top of that would be caught by GMs, though I feel like Steven himself might have a profile similar to mine so his base ...

I feel like people just use Dygz as a pariah, purely because he's an avid forum poster and has a unique personality that stands out. It's way easier to just point at Dygz and yell all the anti-pve-carebear stuff than to try and understand his pov and then use that understanding to better explain the game's design to any potential newcomers that have a differing outlook on the game's design. And I'd imagine that in time you'd get similar treatment, because you also stand out and have already garnered a few senseless "haters" here and there. It's all really ...

The only ones who can tell you how important your feedback is are Intrepid. Everyone else can kindly go fuck themselves, cause I'm sure that we, at best, have a few pro testers here (if any at all) and outside of them ain't nobody got the rights to put down someone's feedback's worth. Especially when that feedback comes from people with different backgrounds and gameplay interests. While the target audience might've shifted with that open seas change, there's still several features that can be (and I'd even say should be) tested by those who no longer fit the TA. ...

That's somewhat countered by PKing the healer first. Then the "victims" try to kill the PKer, but the PKer is getting healed and protected by others, which makes those others purple. Now if the "victims" want to win against their attackers - they have to flag up in order to stop the PKer supporters. And you have yourself party pvp. So it's more logical to just fight back and be at full strength.
