These strange discussions about open pvp

Pretty much as literally every other game. If game history has taught us anything it's that good games are good only because the devs knew what they were doing and had the opportunity to realize their vision to the best of the abilities. All the indie game successes came from a dev thinking to themselves "I don't think I've seen a game like this and I think I can make it myself" and then they just fucking do it. Even if the vision wasn't represented in its full form, the game still succeeds because the devs knew what and ...

Afaik that's the island with a castle on it. Depending on how the castle nodes work, the whole island might just be the castle and its 3 nodes, which afaik are none of the 4 types. So I think the chances are suuuuuuper small.

Yes, imo it's better to have a one design direction that represents the best form of devs' vision, even if it brings in less players, rather than having 2 subpar versions that not only split the playerbase but also split the dev time for each and increase the costs of upkeep of both. Imo it's better to have theoretical 200-300k players of the Ashes Steven wants to make, who will stick with the game for as long as its alive because those 200-300k people are the precise target audience of Steven's vision, rather than having 1-2kk players with 100k ...

I know you hate WoW as an example and I'd assume you don't value FF14 as a great example either, but, from what I understand, both of those games have millions of players of which only a small fraction actually participates in top lvl content (namely the hardest raids in the game). Everyone else just does their own small stuff, be it some mobs farming or questing or artisan stuff or RPing. My example of 10-15 weekly bosses accounts for 5-6 full raids that fight for the right at the boss at the same time each day, especially if ...

I was thinking about a ladder-type system that wouldn't change the current flagging rules in any way, but would just provide some bonuses to people in the "correct" bracket. Smth like "if you were living in node6 but were constantly losing pvp, you can move to node5 and have some type of bonus for doing so (maybe a smaller price on citizenship or discount on purchases within the node or stuff like that)". And then if you keep killing a ton of people within node5 - you'd get some bonuses for moving into node6 (these ones would have to ...

That's because PvE is always more popular because the masses dislike conflict. All the most popular mmos show that. But Ashes is not being designed as "the best pve mmo out there", it's being designed as a "pvx mmo, like in the old days". So they either have to completely change their design direction or they will literally repeat NW's fate. Make a game with a design that doesn't fit the pure pvers' preferences and lose >90% of their playerbase within a month or two. And Intrepid wouldn't have the money to come back from that kind of loss. ...

It's all about weighing risk vs reward. Do you have valuable resources on you that you don't want to lose? Then fight back and either don't lose them or lose half the amount. Do you think you'll be able to get back to that spot and kill the attacker while he's still red? Then you can try and "punish" him with corruption, but it's also not assured that he will even go through with the kill and now you'll be at low hp and there's a chance that a mob kills you and you lose the full amount of ...

Yeah, I'd be fine with a system like this. Provide needed info to encourage proper gathering culture in your own node and have ways to participate in "pvp" w/o directly fighting people.

Have you heard of a super small super niche super underground little unknown game called World of fucking Warcraft? And all its pvp servers that literally died and pretty much became just 1 fully populated server, while DOZENS of pve servers thrived? Cause that's what we're talking about and giving examples of. There's also NW's toggle mechanic, where barely anyone has it on, relatively speaking. They are not restricted from it. They can go to literally several other shops that are right around the corner who'd be more than glad to remove the bacon. But here at the "Papa ...

Where exactly is the "vision comptonization"? Steven doesn't consider cosmetics a win-state and he loves limited/collectible stuff, so both of those things are "within vision" for him.

Here's an example. You've spent the last 3 hours farming some valuable resource. If you die as a green player you'll lose 1.5h of that progress (theoretically speaking. we don't know the exact values). That death could come from a PKer or from a random mob that was just a bit too strong for you. If a player attacks you, you have 3 choices. Run away and save your progress completely. Just stand there and die, losing that 1.5h of progress, while giving the attacker corruption Fight back and either win and get attacker's loot or die and only ...

I mean, L2 had this. You had raid content at lvl40, lvl50 and 52, lvl61 and several ones at top lvl (these ones grew with max lvl of the game). I was just giving the example of endgame gameplay loops, because if people are playing the game for a long time, their low lvl encounters will be only a fraction of their overall gametime. But yes, I agree that there should be raid content at several lvl steps (usually coinciding with gear tiers). Yours. Because as I said, the pvp would only give you the right to attempt the ...

That would only really work if we have no clue about a target's lvl (I really hope we do) and if you have a short fuse against baiting. A low lvl player won't be able to grab your mobs, he won't be able to aoe-bait you and we don't have any info on competitive gathering yet so we don't know whether there's a way to "outgather" someone w/o directly engaging with them in pvp. Do hope today's stream will address that point.

Yeah, that would be a viable strategy. Though this is not really a "bait" cause the high lvl player got no clue what's being transported. I have one small worry though. I feel like mules might've been removed as a concept and were replaced with this And if this is true, then not only will you see what's being transported, but it would then definitely be a PK bait mechanic, unless there's some limit on who can pull these.

I guess if Ashes has several different gear sets at top lvl that go from lowest to highest in power, then the low difficulty raids could give those low power sets w/o attracting the super hardcore players to always farm them. But I don't remember if we've gotten any info on how many levels of gear power we'll see at each tier. It's an open world boss which will exist in the world until it dies, so, as I see it, you should be able to attempt it until it dies. And you can remove the pvp part after ...

That sounds somewhat similar to Blade&Soul's gearing system. Though iirc your suggestion from this post goes a bit deeper than B&S's did. Yeah, I hope it works out that way in the end, no matter what the gearing system itself is (though they're obviously connected). I feel like I'm either not explaining myself well enough or there's some misunderstanding on either mine or yours side. I think the problem is with my words usage (which is ironic, considering the discussion we recently had). I shouldn't be using "open world" as much as I do when referencing bosses. I guess ...

I'm the wrong person to ask L2 had arena fights that had big benefits if you were #1 in your class. Those arenas were influences by your gear and upgrade lvl of abilities. In order to get amazing gear and high upgrade lvl you had to griiiiiind. Thousands upon thousands of mobs. A few thousands of those were "purely pve" because those mobs lived in fortresses that your guild had to siege and most of the time (well, on the servers that I played) my guild would be the only one sieging the same fortress at any given time(there ...

Which is exactly what the mule should've been doing for you. It's the bigger second inventory. Unless they've completely separated resources into those that you can carry in your inventory or on a mule and stuff that you can only carry in carts and caravans.

That would only work if we saw player lvls, but even then, if you mean that the PKer get corruption that would take a week-worth of dying to remove - that's pretty much removal of a character, cause you'd have so damn much XP debt that you'd pretty much "delevel" to lvl1. And all the items would've dropped within the first day of them being corrupted, so they wouldn't even be a piñata after that.

The main reason for death penalties is for said death to matter. And just to reiterate it, you get death penalties on any death, not just pvp. And Steven knows that his design won't appeal to everyone. At this point it's this game's motto: "it's not for everyone". You took a wrong turn around a node and agroed a strong mob or a roaming boss? You die and suffer penalties. The next time you run around the world, you'll have to be more careful. The same applies to pvp too. You gotta be aware of your surroundings, the players ...

It's just a difference of standards. Noaani has super high ones when it comes to the quantity of high quality content. Most people either don't care or at least just have much lower standards for the quantity. WoW and FF14 being the biggest examples of that. This gives me hope that general masses of gamers might like the game still, but the main issue that Noaani seems to have with previous statements by Steven is that Intrepid's trying to attract top lvl pvers while it doesn't seem to provide the type and quantity of the content that would achieve ...

Is the goal truly PvX?

Post by Ludullu on 2022-10-28 13:35:31

Imo WoW destroyed any potential for a pvx game to survive, because it created and cemented in people's minds the idea of pure duality. You either do pvp or pve. It then reinforced this idea by giving people equal gear by being good at either instead of both. And this led to people only thinking within that duality. PvErs can never enjoy pvp and PvPers can't do PvE. And after several generations of gamers we have ourselves the current situation, where PvX doesn't mean shit, or, to be more exact, it means that "it's a pvp game that also ...

Mobs don't drop coins, so you're pretty much always just your normal self. The only ones who'd be able to avoid that are questers that don't pick up any loot. And while that's a valid playstyle, I feel like limiting yourself that much would just make people hate the game even more than a death here or there.

Nothing has been given out because it's planned for later on in alpha2. I'd assume we'll have the first two of the ones you asked about, but I'm not sure if they can make combat music work outside of scripted events.
