Will the game have detargeting abilities?

Ashes is already kinda going that way. Everyone can wear anything. I just hope Intrepid doesn't design OP shit that you have to use for 4 fucking years just because it's that OP.

I'd imagine the biggest reason would be greed. Guilds will try to "control" as much land as possible. And depending on the guild, they might only be able to do it in one particular way (pvp fights or questing or money or numbers), so even if they already "control" one metro - they'll want more. This was true for castles in L2 and I'm sure at least some guilds will try and attempt it in Ashes. And it's way easier to destroy smth and then build it up with you at the helm rather than just overtake it (especially ...

I expect it to go from simple to complex with your artisan lvls.

Good to know. We finally circle back to the good ol' "this game might not be for you". As much of a meme as it is, it always seems to apply.

And some non-WoW players want the same thing. And it's not "free", it's just not tedious pointless grinding for the sake of grinding. I'd rather have weak pots that you can get pretty quickly and/or stronger pots that just require you to kill a difficult mob/boss. So instead of grinding several hours I'd just need to prove that I have enough skill to receive the reward. But even then, imo those strong pots should be craftable so that I could just go and buy them from someone or my guildmates would be working on crafting them instead of killing ...

Imo L2 could go faster than action games with its ability spam (and quantity) exactly because it was click-to-move. While quite a few classes mainly used 5-7 abilities (if that) just because they were "enough" to kill others, the variety of tools and damaging skills was quite high, especially in later updates. I used ~20 abilities in 80% of my fights, with ~10 more additional ones when needed. Cast speeds were high so you could shoot out 2-3 abilities a second. I'd imagine that action games have to go a bit lower purely because you gotta have at least ...

Yeah, I'd imagine that controllers let you do more stuff more easily, especially when you go the BDO way. Though I'm not sure how many people can go for hours and hours of playing a high intensity "press several buttons at the same time and keep doing it at super high speeds w/o stopping" gameplay. I'm sure there's quite a few who can w/o a problem, but from what I've heard/seen from console players, the whole point of playing on a console is to just chill on a couch and not be a super sweaty player. And even when ...

I think the number of skills is also more about what they represent than purely button availability. If the game's design lets you do whatever you need to do and gives you tools for it and all of that fits into 20-30 abilities - you wouldn't really need more. But if you have 60 learned abilities and several of them are very precise tools that you only need rarely so they are not really worthy enough of a slot on your active bar - then I'd just prefer the "several bars" design and afaik that is already the case ...

There are no dates. We have no info on the release of any testing stages.

I think Intrepid avoid this by stating that they're not planning for controller support. Obviously people can and will use those to control the game, but by saying "we don't support it" Intrepid at least distance themselves from potential control issues of that method. And as for any other custom control method - those are always on the player rather than on the developer (well, at least imo). And if some super cyber coolhacker player is complaining that the game doesn't have 100 buttons for him to press on his 200 button apparatuses - the only thing I can ...

Well then I hope those same people explain themselves, but imo they just see themselves as PC master race while the console players are peasants. And that's they only reason for their opinion. And while I definitely agree that kbm has waaaaay more button combinations, I don't think any sane player would want an mmo where you have to press 3 different keys at the same time just to use a single ability, of which there'd be hundreds. There was a reason why, even though L2's classes had upwards of 40 abilities, most people barely used 10. Simplicity will ...

And yet when we've given examples or explanations to why we disagree you usually just go back to "wow did it great imo so Intrepid should do smth similar/same". This is why we keep coming back to "wow is not perfect and other games have done better or at least the same".

As long as Intrepid succeed at "one of each archetype" being a beneficial party setup and give at least one archetype the tools to help others restore mana, I think it'd be fine. L2's mana restoring classes had this ability And with those classes having the biggest mana pools and their restoration magic restoring quite a bit of mana to the fighting classes (relatively speaking), you could farm quite a bit of stuff before requiring a full rest. Magic parties would usually use 2 such classes, because their mana usage was obviously higher. Those classes would also have some ...

Well, that would be where the augments come in, be they mage or bard ones. But if we're to have even a basic "preferred" party setup - there'll always be people that won't have that precise setup and will have to deal with that. That's just the nature of party-based balanced games. You either have a constant party of people you play with regularly and do difficult content with them or you pug with total randoms and only do low-mid difficulty stuff. Steven wants to get away from purely solo mmos of today and, to me, that implies the ...

I'd definitely say that it "just works" in the context of "you have all the partymates you need for your party", so yeah, if too many people dislike that kind of design I guess Intrepid would have to balance around that properly. To me, everyone relying on mana works from the standpoint of "no pvp can be forever because yall gonna run out of mana sooner or later". And when you have 9v9 battles that can go on for 10 or more minutes even with limited mana, I can't even imagine what happens if you don't rely on it. ...

Yeah, we'll just have to disagree on that particular part of design. Totally get why you'd dislike it, but my L2 bias and overall preference of forced constant partying pushes me towards liking this kind of direction.

Love it and definitely want to see every archetype having some form of mana gameplay and some augments providing ways of soft restoration of mana through different means. Weapon procs could help with that too.

With all this talk of how "wow had the best consumable-based gold sinks" (which are not even gold sinks), here's a truly amazing consumable-based sink (both gold and gear) from L2 This is a consumable that, iirc, doubled your atk dmg (maybe not x2, but definitely x1.x). It was used up on every attack, if activated. The only way to get this consumable was from a crafting class (would be a profession or a collective effort of several professions in Ashes). At this point this would be a "gold sink" in Veko's mind, but that's not all. As you ...

If anything, the healer's a much worse thing, because you can't really farm effectively w/o him at all, while you could farm stuff w/o a "mana manager" but just way slower.
Post by Ludullu on 2022-11-20 17:41:31
Yeah, we agree there. That's why I wanna see different ways of mana restoration for different classes. There could still be a mana manager class who's the strongest and most direct with its mana restores, but all archetypes should have at least some way to manage their mana if everyone uses mana as the main resource for abilities (and potentially even running).
Post by Ludullu on 2022-11-20 17:53:41
Imo not really? When your hp ends - you die and suffer consequences. When your mana ends - you just wait for it to regen. And if the content is not dumbeasy, I doubt you'd be attacking mobs when you're at 10-30% hp, while you could definitely attack with that amount of mana unless every ability literally ate up 20% per use.
Post by Ludullu on 2022-11-20 18:12:05
But my whole point was to oversimplify it, in that particular context. I agree that under certain designs having no mana would be pretty much same as having no mp. Hell, L2 was pretty much exactly that, because in a mage group, if all 2-3 of your dps mages had 0 mana, the group couldn't do shit, so their absence of mana was effectively the absence of hp for all party members. But in those situations the party gameplay went from a "mage party" to a "benny hill party", where the remaining members would just run around kiting the ...

Yeah, they just have to balance it all properly so as to not create those metas. Balancing all the possible hundreds of augments from all the different schools and resources would be a huge pain, I'd assume. And when you put some potential augments school of "lets you restore some mana on use" against a design point of "almost every class has some form of mana burn" - the players would be pushed towards that kind of school, rather than some school that just gives them a higher CC chance or some elemental dmg or whatever else.
Post by Ludullu on 2022-11-20 18:57:04
Yeah, but in my experience lack of HP is the same limiter as lack of mana. I wouldn't attack a mob that hits for 20% of my HP if I only had 30% of it. And I'd either need a healer to restore my HP or I'd need to wait for regen. And while Azherae is correct that a lot of games provide you with some ways of circumventing the mob's attacks, so your value of 30% HP goes way up, I'd imagine that mana's value is higher than HP's by default. I could be wrong in that assumption ...
Post by Ludullu on 2022-11-20 19:26:57
L2's design warped my thinking too much. If I was solo - I had no buffs so any stronger mob would do a ton of dmg. If I was in a party - it was always a constant one with a healer and an MP manager. The "middleground" of those would be higher rated servers where you had a full buff w/o a party, but then you'd be fighting the same strong party mobs, so they'd still do pretty big chunks of your HP. So yeah, if Ashes manages to step away from the L2's buff design and its ...

None have been. Every game is disliked/hated by someone. And usually the higher the popularity - the more haters there is.
Post by Ludullu on 2022-11-20 22:35:11
Oh btw, yes, the only reason WoW became popular back then is literally because it was piss easy. It was the most casual of mmos of the time. Lineage 2 required you to grind for months just to get a bit better gear (not even a full set). And a single death there set you back several hours of hardcore grind at the best farming spot. People lost weeks of playing when trying to kill a boss or during sieges. Oh and all the best in the genre open world pvp too! That pvp was so damn good that ...

Unless the private server that I played on at the time completely changed that mechanic, I think that by C4 it was already "only PKers drop stuff". I might be misremembering cause it's been over 15 years since I played that version of the game, but I think that's right. But yes, early L2 was quite different from later updates and even more different from even later ones. And there's been several separations of the playerbase which all consider different version "the real L2". This is one of the main reasons why I was trying to find out which ...
