Yeah, especially on this class, cause it has 2 blinks so overall mobility is super high (there's a movement speed buff too). And it has an anchor aoe with a short radius around the character, so you always try to look for high value targets to jump on and try anchoring them (anchor is a stun in L2, so it's a very powerful skill), but the class itself is fairly squishy so you want to keep distance from burst characters, so you're constantly moving, constantly spinning your camera to know your surroundings and second-to-second enemy movements/positioning, on top of ...

Yeah, smth like this could work. Even "craft several things at once through a minigame" could work, though I think that might bring up its own design issues. As long as it's not "spend 5+ secs per craft" I'd personally be fine. I could maybe see a "skill check" quest pop up from time to time, where you have some particular activities testing your crafting skill.

I still feel that the worry of imbalance of risk is present. Obviously we'll have to see how they balance that progression system and how the social part of the game will influence players, but I still feel like losing hours/days-worth of materials is not quite the same as just losing a few points on the social org ladder (if you're even a part of that ladder in the first place).

I personally don't see any problems with looting in a game that doesn't have bounded/untradeable gear (well, it'll have a few afaik, but nothing impactful). And a party-based game on top of that. Obviously I'm quite biased towards a particular gameplay style from my L2 days, but back then if you had a party that you played with - everyone would get their gear equally and the order would be discussed within each party. Some parties knew that they didn't need too much defense, so they'd start farming weapons for the DPS classes first. Some parties knew that their ...

I would lose time, first and foremost. Maybe I'm deep in a dungeon that I spent 30 minutes getting to. Why would I waste those 30 mins again just because some dude thought he deserves the right to farm that room. And depending on the class balancing, I might win the RPS matchup and his first strike doesn't mean shit. But in my case, I'd usually be Han Solo, because if I see someone walking towards my farming spot - I shoot first. Now I have the upper hand, I've let them know that I'm ready to fight and ...

I'd suggest you read up on the currently planned design, because 80% of the things you suggested are already the case and the other 20% are already planned to be designed better than the grindy version you suggested (at least imo). https://ashesofcreation.wiki/Crafting

Planned "time to kill" is 30 secs to 1 minute. I'd assume the speed of combat is higher than 3-5 hits a minute, so most likely that first hit won't matter too much, unless the difference in character strength is so damn high that the attacker can in fact 3-shot their target. But at that point, they'll get so much corruption that they'll never do that again (well unless they're a troll, then just good luck to them).

Dunno how it was in Star Wars Galaxies (as that is one of the inspirations for the crafting system), but this was the case in Lineage 2 (another big inspiration for the game) and it worked just fine through word of mouth and market sales. If you found a rare new recipe that no one else have gotten yet - you get big money. And you now have the info to sell to other people too. Obviously there'll be some guides, but considering how the Node system will work, I highly doubt those guides will be too helpful for ...

Very true. Have had coooountless times where I'd win in pvp against some dude and literally a second later another dude enters the room and kills me. And this wasn't even the case of "I got baited into flagging and 2 dudes killed me", it was usually just people trying to farm the same location and their timings just being too perfect. And dungeon/location design in ashes will gave a huge impact on this interaction. If I can turn my camera in one room just enough to take a peek into the next room and see a flagged dude ...

I'd definitely love some L2 Olympiad-style arena ladder (and the current arena might be quite similar to that) with its own rewards and stuff, but those wouldn't be casual at all and I'd personally like them to be a "later update" thing, so that it adds more content for the people who've maxxed out all the things they wanted to max out and became a bit tired of caravan pvp.

Allegedly there could be super high lvl mobs close to low lvl mobs, due to how the Node system will work. So, by not having any threat indicators for mobs, you might be dooming most lowbies/newbies to constant dying against mobs (cause the mobs might be so strong that they one-shot the player). And now you're not only alienating your more casual playerbase with pvp, but with pve too. And as much as I agree with the "risk vs reward" in the open world, I'm not sure if completely obliviousness is the best way to go about it. Tell ...

We'll have multiple hotbars for abilities. See no point in tying those to weapons or gear overall. https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxPF0458MYP8osRC3ACmfHA16a0RgX3b9u If I misunderstood what you meant by "bar swap", do correct me.

I'd personally prefer a combination of L2's "when you press basic atk, your character turns towards your target and runs towards them until they're in range to attack" and Genshin's action aiming of "you can spam shoot if you want, but if you wait 3 secs, you're gonna do a much stronger hit". And considering that there'll be tab targeting in the game, I'd definitely like for there to be abilities that play with targeting. Switch your tab to another target or remove your tab target completely, or hold your tab on some target (I'd mainly attribute this to ...

I shoulda specified. Considering that there won't be any autoattacks in Ashes, you'd still need to do attacks yourself. The game would only bring you into range, if you were outside of it. And you'd still have to properly move and position yourself within that range, and you'd have to control/switch between tab/action because your target might reposition and instead of doing some attack your character might try to move within range. I've had quite a few times where that movement would prevent me from doing a skill that I wanted to, so I'd have to learn how to ...

I'm not a baseball player but I have broken many a stick in my days. You know what was the easier way to break a stick? To run up to something hard and put all that kinetic energy into my hit. And from what I've seen of baseball hits, you don't hit a ball from "standing still", you move your whole body in quite a specific manner in order to maximize your energy output. I think that's what others meant when saying "moving gives your attacks more power".

Did you by chance check out the L2 video I posted for Azherae? It was quite fast. And that was just 1v1 pvp, which is fairly slower than mass pvp, so that's not the limit on tab target mmo speed. And you could get even faster if you wanted to really push the player's reaction speeds. Not all tab mmos have 10-year-long gcds that slow down combat to a fucking crawl.

I guess it's the same bias that I have towards L2 and its mechanics or some random wow andy's bias towards wow's stuff. Mag just can't bring himself to agree that someone might've had an experience differing from his own.

That's just limited shitty design. I want strong small bugs and I want dumb weak big trolls. Just showing you whether a mob is way higher than you in lvl or lower (or same) gives a much wider design space to the devs.

Yes, all those old mmos just became hybrids. Just as Ashes will be. So we've come to the proper conclusion of hybrid is the best system and it's great that Intrepid is going for it

I sure hope that video is not the best example of action combat raid pve, cause ooh boy did that not impress me at all. Nor did it show the limits of action combat. The fight literally consisted of "move out of the aoe, use aoes against some slowish mobs and then stand in one fucking place and unload your 3 (maybe 6-9?) skills onto a huge unmoving target. When Noaani says "action combat can't do what Tab can", I think he means the limits of the system in each given fight (or at least top ones). I did ...

From what it looked like, that seems like a semi-abuse tactic where a part of the raid can stand in one particular place to minimize received dmg. We'd need Noaani to explain that particular raid for us. Here's a boss from 2006. Super simplistic mechanics-wise. Super fast, super big aoes, super random aggro, super fast regen (iirc), fear/dot/stun as skills (iirc) and a shitton of lava that supposedly damages you (I tried looking at the hp values when the dude had the debuff, but couldn't see it going down, maybe it's more of an accumulative debuff, I don't remember ...

I'm fairly sure you'd need more than just a quick test to really get into the real depth of the game. And that's probably the case with most deep games. You'd need to get a proper feel of your class/character and then put it to the test against a proper difficult enemy. In L2 that enemy would be a counterclass in pvp, while in EQ2, I'd assume, it's some hardish raid.

I think you're trolling Mag a bit too much at this point Though I do get your point, I don't think mag is going that far. I think he just meant that you can hit people w/o having your camera pointed at them, which was the case in L2. The character still had to be in range and turned towards the target, but your camera didn't have to be. And I understand how, from an action player's perspective, that could feel like "cheating". Even though in my experience it was the opposite, where I had to run towards the ...

Now I obviously dunno where's the chicken and where's the egg, but it seems interesting to me that the rise of more action mmos corelate with the drop in pve quality. Mainly in said action mmos, because WoW's raids have only become more difficult (Asmon likes to complain about that) and FF14's raids have also stayed at high difficulty throughout the years afaik. Just an observation of mine

Yeah, I think I get what you're saying. I often try to stop myself from thinking "how da hell is that your thought process?" and try to think more in line of "why would the think so?" And I'm sure I come off as quite condescending often enough too

I think this is what Mag is talking about. The camera points forwards, the enemy is at the character's back and not in the view of the camera. When the character in the vid uses an ability, the character turns around on its own and hits the enemy w/o requiring you to spin the camera. The timing is 1:40 https://youtu.be/FQ9QDoi61hY?t=100
